Leaking Through Diaper

The last 3 nights my daughter has been waking up at night because she is leaking through her diaper. She just turned 2 yrs old and we are in the process of potty training. I am not sure what to do to help with this problem. She is so exhausted in the morning. We have to bath her and change her and then fight to get her back to sleep at night. Based on her weight she is still in a size 3 diaper. Would putting a larger diaper on help or make it worse? We have not changed diaper brands or anything. She did have a few months were she wouldn't go at all at night. What can we do so she doesn't leak through her diapers at night?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My daughter only weighs 25 1/2 lbs. She is in pulls up during the day. I tried a size 4 diaper and it is way too big. I am going to try to let her sleep in the pull ups and maybe that will work. Thanks for the advice.

Don't wake her to much by bathing. Use a sheet saver pad when you put her down. I sneak in sometimes before she wakes and change her before she leaked. She sleeps later now ans no more waking.

I am having the same problem with my son.....what I am trying is cutting his juice off by 7:30...then trying to make him go to potty right before he goes to bed....he sleeps in his pullups and he has done fine with this so far...Its been about 2 weeks...He is 2 1/2.

My son is two and has always needed the larger size diaper night. Maybe give that a try? He still sometimes leaks through it, but it doesn't wake him. I would also suggest just using some wipes on her and putting new clothes on without bathing. It isn't going to hurt her at all and you can bath her the next day. This way she doesn't have to wake up as much and maybe you can get her back to sleep faster. Urine isn't pretty, but it is sterile! Sleep is more important for both of you.

I haven't started potty training seriously yet because I have read over and over that if this is still happening at night, they are not ready. Try a size 4 diaper and see what happens. Some people use and like the diaper inserts you get at publix. For my son, it made things worse! They deflected the urine more than absorbing it. Maybe girls are different?

I would go up in size and/or try another brand. My daughter is not even 2, weighs about 29lbs and wears a 2T.. she wears a diaper size 5. I would just buy a couple of small packs until you find what works.

You can try the next size just make sure they are not droopy in the crotch or it will for sure leak we went through this much earlier & I just went in every few hours & changed her. You may also want to move up to pull ups we use the generic dollar store brand & they hold up great (the huggies & name brands don't absorb well because they are not ment to) but you have to make sure they have a snug fit. Hope this help some.

I second (or third?) the Huggies Overnights, if the smallest size will fit. If a larger diaper doesn't fit well, it'll just leak worse. At night I used the Overnights PLUS the Publix Diaper Doublers for my son. The Doublers are just a long pad that you put inside the diaper.

Another idea that someone gave me that helped is to put the mattress cover on the bed, then a large, waterproof pad, then the sheet. Then put on ANOTHER waterproof pad and another sheet. Some people said they've used even more layers. Then if the bed does get wet, you can just pull off the top layer and you've got fresh bedding. I found out that this also works well for when you've got a sick kid with a stomach virus...

If the Overnights and Doublers work, she shouldn't be leaking through and getting all cold and wet. If she'll sleep through, try letting her, even if she her diaper is wet. I was actually waking my kids up and changing them when they wet at night, until I read that sleep was more important than getting that wet diaper changed (unless they're leaking, of course). Even with sensitive skin, my daughter was fine until morning. Now poop is a different story, it has digestive enzymes that eat away at the skin, so they have to wake up for that.

Oh yeah, one more thing I just remembered. I had to change diaper brands a couple of times as each of my kids grew and their bodies changed shape. They'd be fine, then all of a sudden the diapers I had always used would start to leak. At first I used regular Huggies, then Luvs, then only Huggies Supreme would work with my boy. I used the same with my girl, until she hit about 2yo and stretched out a bit, then the Supremes didn't work, but Pampers Cruisers did. Certain diapers just fit certain kids better than others, I think.

I would say to go with a size 4, and those Huggies Overnights are really good. I have tried most brands of diapers and found that huggies work the best for both girls and boys. I have a 3 year old son who refuses to use the potty so we are still using diapers on him at night and pull ups during the day. His sister is 17 months and I use Huggies on her as well and rarely does she ever leak out. Usually when they start leking out like that, it's time to switch it up a size. The weight guidelines don't have to be adhered to. My daughter falls into the weight category of a 4, but they're kinda small on her cause she's really long in the torso so I put her in a 5. And I would nix the night time baths and use wipes, fresh clothes and fresh sheets. Giving her a bath in the middle of the night will only wake her up and may confuse her as far as her schedule goes if you're faithful about a nighttime/bathing routine. I'd reserve the middle of the night baths for when you really need it, like when they get sick and throw up all over themselves! Good luck!

Hi B..

My son is also 2 years old. I only put him in a diaper at night when we started potty training-just before he turned two.

If she is leaking through this diaper, I would definitely suggest the next size up. The wal-mart brand is actually the best diaper I've ever used. "Parent's Choice" is the name of it. They are cheap, but they really absorb.

STOP THE LIQUIDS 2-3 hours before bed time. I wouldn't suggest bathing her right then and there after she pees through her diaper...just wipe her off with a wipey, put another diaper on her and change the bed sheets immediately. By giving her a bath, you are just waking her up and its hard for her to fall back to sleep.

I also starting getting my son up in the middle of the night (1-2 times depending on his liquid intake) to pee. I'd just sit him on the toilet and make sure his urine was going in and then he'd go right back to sleep. Now, he gets up on his own and also goes back to bed after he is finished using the bathroom.

If you can time her bathroom schedule, you can possibly keep the diaper off at night, take her to pee once or twice during the night and then let her go back to bed. If she is peeing in her diaper at night and not waking up through it, then she will most likely not be too awake for when you take her to pee during the night, rather than giving her a bath!

Potty training is tough, but you learn!

I had the same problem with my son at that age. I ended up trying a overnight brand diaper and then used "good nights" The "good nights" where a bit big for him, so I would put a pair of underware over them to keep them in place. Good luck, and I hope I was helpful!

I would put her in a larger size diaper... My boys are in size 6 because they are tall and the 5 didn't cover enough area. They still sometimes pee so much at night that it leaks through a little. I would change the diaper size and see if that helps, and maybe cut back on the amount of liquids you give her before bedtime.

The best way to keep her dry at night is to double diaper her. First put on her regular size and then the nest size up. We used this method all of the time before sending the little kids home on the bus so they would be dry if they had a very long bus ride home. The parents began using our system at nights and reported wonderful results.

If you're working on potty training, try to get her to go on the potty before she goes to bed. You can also try using the nighttime pull ups or try putting her on the potty before YOU go to bed. She'll be groggy but should go back to sleep quickly. Finally, don't give her too much to drink before bedtime. My daughter is 4 and a half and still uses pullups because she sleeps so soundly that she doesn't feel when she needs to go potty. Potty training can be a long process and you'll probably have many more nights of wet beds.

My three year old still wears the Pampers Pull-Ups to bed at night and they seem to work great. There are also brands of overnight pull ups that you can buy. If you are working on potty training her then you probably want to start looking into pull-ups for everyday use anyhow. The diaper is only going to be a deterent for her, but a pull up is like wearing big girl pants. Just a suggestion. Good luck!

My daughter started doing the same thing but much younger. I swear my the huggies nighttime diapers. They work great. They start at size four. But she should be okay in them. That don't leak at all at night. She should start sleeping better too.

i never followed the diaper size chart i always went with the next size up once flood thru's occured. her bladder maybe too large to hold size 3. i'd mover her into pull-up the learning designs, avoid the cool alert ones except during the days because they will not last, or if your still using diapers huggies makes an overnight that is thicker i'd move to a size 4 and at night put her into the thicker brand, my 5 yr old is autistic and having potty training issues and she is in the 4t-5t pull-ups even at night and they hold up well.

B.,
I had the same problem with my son. He would wake up most nights soaked. I switched to Huggies night time diapers and it worked most of the time. At Publix you can get extra inserts to put into the diaper at night, in the baby section. I have also heard of moms using extra absorbent feminine pads and inserting them into the diaper at night. If possible try to use just a wet wipe to clean her up at night and keep her room dark while you change her pj's, sheets, and diaper. The bath probably wakes her up and then she has a hard time going back to sleep. If you have every thing on hand and can change her in a dark room as quiet and as quickly as you can then maybe she can return to sleep easier. It worked for my son. I hope this helps!!!

Good luck, K. S.

Buy some size 4 diapers. You need to go up a size and also you can buy "Doublers." I use them for my daughter who is 7 mos. She wets a lot at night and was leaking through a little. You can buy the Doublers at Publix. They are inexpensive and they work. Basically, it is just a long pad that you place inside her diaper and it just gives extra protection. Another thought is rubber pants over her diaper.

If the pull ups don't work you can get Huggies overnight diapers in a size 3. Not many places carry them in a size 3, but I have found them at both Babies R Us and Toys R Us.
