Leaking Out of Diapers

Okay...silly question. Does anyone have any other ideas for preventing leaks out of dipers? Let me explain...my 3-month-old son is in size 1 diapers, which I realize there really is no consistancy from brand to brand on size, shape, etc. and we were doing fine with Pampers, when he started going out the back almost every time- though they were highly absorbant. Luckily, my sister-in-law gave me all her size 1's from her daughter, so I have several brands to try. Luvs...he went out of the front, back and legs of every single one I put him in for 2 days!!! I've also tried Huggies, Parents Choice and another off brand. Huggies seemed to work more often than not, but most of them he leaks out either the back or the leg. I've tried bigger size 1 brands, smaller size 1 brands, straight leg, curved leg, tightening the tabs, loosening the tabs, even leaving a litte "pocket" in the bottom area while diapering.

Luckily, he usually only goes 2-3 times a day...a lot (pee doesn't seem to be a problem, but occassionally he'll have a wet spot on his shirt either in front or at the leg after sleepin all night)! He's breast fed so it's quite runny. I'm just tired of him constantly leaking and the pile of poopy-stained laundry is piling up!!! Help please!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the responses. I did go up 2 sizes in diapers. My sister-in-law gave me some size 2 diapers and I was surprised to find that they were the same size as some of the bigger size 1 that I was already putting him in, so I ran to the store and tried Huggies and Pampers (both used to work for him) size 3 and so far so good!!! Next time I'll just know to go up another size. Thank you all again!

I had this problem with my son. He leaked through everything, every diaper I tried. I changed to cloth diapers and have not had a single leak. And that includes him wearing them all night. I love using the cloth diapers. It only costs us about $400 to diaper him until he is potty trained. And he doesn't get diaper rash.

S.,
I had the same problem with my 3 mo. old (& her sister before her), after I switched to a size 2 (not a 1-2), the problem resolved itself for the most part. She seems to have very forceful bowel movements so every once in a while when she has a huge blowout, it might leak, but usually not. I hope that helps.

Go up to the next size diaper. I have found with both my kids once they start leaking they are outgrowing the diapers. Every time we had this problem the bigger diapers solved it.

We used White Cloud with one kid. One was more sensitive, so we've had to stick with the expensive Pampers. The only time we've had leaks is from either not changing often enough, or from the diaper not being big enough. You might try tightening. As a baby sitter I learned diapers need to be quite tight. I also did see something on the internet years ago like a pad that you put in the diaper to make it more absorbent. Anyway, Mommy's Little Miracle (if you can find it) always got those little yellow marks out of the clothes. If you can find it, I'd love to know where. I haven't seen it in about two years and really miss having it. It was the best on spit up. GL and congratulations on the little man!

Something other moms always told me when I had my first was that if diapers are blowing out, they don't fit. Go up a size. I've tried it with both of my kids, and it works. I know diaper sizes give a weight, but I find that it is not always acurate, because the weight is ditributed differently on every child. Besides that, boys need a little extra room, so they tend to blow out more. Going up a size will often solve the problem.

Try moving up a size. That always helped us...usually when the diapers started leaking a ton, I knew it was time!

My son used to leak all the time. My husband amazingly had the answer--I wasn't putting them on tight enough! So I started pulling them tighter between his legs than I thought was gentle enough, and pulled the tabs tighter, too. I thought for sure he'd have red marks and be uncomfortable, but he wasn't (I was really being overly gentle with him) and the leaking (and giant piles of laundry) stopped.
And then I didn't have the problem with my second son, because I was already used to putting them on tight enough.
Hey, it's worth a shot!

I am a mother of four, two boys and two girls....GO UP A SIZE and I believe huggies supreme are the best bet. They can handle more than any others especially for boys. I would buy them by the box and end up paying about $25.00 per month in diapers. I was told this by welfare mothers so broke they wore clothes with holes in them, and found that it was true. They save money when it comes to wet diapers.

I had that problem All.The.Time. with regular disposible diapers. My daughter was the same way, when she went she WENT! I had her in a bumbo one day and poop was just EVERYWHERE! So I switched to cloth. I had heard that they did a great job of containing the flow so I gave them a shot. I figured that I was washing poop anyways right. But I tell you what, I absolutely never looked back. I even had my babysitter converted. She was over here one day and my daughter had one of those over-flowing breast-fed baby poops (that would have been everywhere had she not been wearing a cloth diaper) and she changed her but put her in one of the few disposibles I had left. Not more than 30 minutes later, she went again and instead of it being contained it was everywhere!

My daughter is tiny so before I switched I would just put her in the next size up. She was not even 12 lbs when I moved her into a size 3 in a vain attempt to contain the poo. No disposible I tried worked as well at containing it as cloth does.

I know cloth is not for everyone but its not as big of a deal as everyone thinks it is. For the breast-fed only poo you dont even need to rinse or anything. Just throw it in the washer, soak, hot water wash and rinse until you have no bubbles. Put in the dryer and you're done.

I converted while my husband was deployed and he came home and saw how well they worked and has become a total convert too.

If you are interested to look into cloth, here is a great link for you.

Boy, does this bring back memories...My youngest is alittle of two now....With all my boys I would go up a size in disposibles so the top edge of the diaper was almost to the armpits. This may seem funny but it kept most of the 'blow-outs' somewhat contained. And if it got bad then I'd add a rubber/vinyl diaper cover over the disposable. If I was going to have the baby in a carseat for awhile or even less time, I would even put another diaper either cloth or disposable up the back under the clothes. Then ofcourse I'd pack along 3 - 4 changes of clothes and become realllly familiar with how to wash the carseat cover...Gotta laugh, 'cause these are precious times with the little ones and there's lots more adventures to come.
Blessings

I have found that I hate all of the big name diapers they are worthless, and EXPENSIVE. I use the Western Family Cozy Care, they are inexpensive and made better than anything else that I have tried, they are not a cure all for all poops but it doesn't give you cause to mourn to badly when they are or aren't what you are looking for I have twins in them right now. I won't buy another diaper ever again if I can help it.
Or you can do something that may sound kind of gross but it could save the clothing, for a couple of months until the poop gets a little more solid, I would take one of my maxi pads and lay it across the back inside of the diaper width wise from fastener to fastener of the diaper it should act as a stopper and then it will stop the flood that comes from gaps, in the back and nobody should notice it either, until the diaper comes off.
This should only last a short time before the poop is easier to contain. LOL

Have you tried moving him to the next size diaper? I have found that when my kids start leaking out of the diapers consistently it is time to move up to the next size. I currenly have a 4 month old and she is moving into the size 3, as soon as I buy them. For me it didn't matter what brand it was, as soon as the leaking starts, I find it is time to move up. I know that the package gives a range of weights as to what they fit, and when my kids have reached the upper extent of that range they start to leak and not fit right and so I move them up. Congrats on the little one and good luck with your search.
