Laundry Stains - Hermitage,TN

Okay, so I know you ladies have answered this question in various forms a hundred times, but I can't find any of the prior queries, so....

How do I get out set-in stains from my son's clothing? To be more specific, I have several items taking up space on top of my washer that have spaghetti sauce, chocolate, and/or blood on them that hasn't come out by pre-treating them and running them through the normal wash cycle. I have not dried any of them once they went through the wash. Is there still hope to salvage them, or should I send them to Goodwill? One other thing to note: they are all cotton fabrics....

Thanks so much for your input!

Have you tried Dreft laundry stain remover? It is a spray that you use before you wash the clothes. I have a newborn and it has worked on spit up, diaper mishaps, etc. It sometimes takes two tries, but usually works. I use it on everything now.

Name brand Oxiclean laundry spray. Works on everything. It takes sometime but I will go through a pile of kids clothes and pretreat everything. If it's really stuck I will soak in the sink for a while first.

I've had luck with using a pre-treater (Shout), then let the wash soak in the washer overnight with detergent. Doesn't work everytime, but its worth a try.

Try Goo Gone. I've had success with it taking all of those out and even salad oil even after already being washed. Spray the area and let it soak a few minutes at least. It may need to be done twice depending on the stain. Good luck!

Try soaking them in Biz. If you have a soak cycle on your washing machine try that. If you have atop loader machine, you can start your soak cycle let it run for a couple of minutes, then let them soak either all night or all day, then wash them like you regularly do. This is what I did for my daughters and grandchildrens clothes. I had pretty good luck with it. D. P.

Here is a post from July 1st from a mom looking to get out chocolate. There are lots of great suggestions.

A few of us (myself included) swear by Dawn dishwashing detergent... it removes just about anything!

Meat tenderizer will help with the blood. It works by breaking down proteins. On tough stains like chocolate and red stains I use oxyclean in large bowl or sink of slightly warm water and let it soak. If all else fails I keep a bottle of water on my counter that has just a little bleach in it (for disinfecting counters) a few squirts if it is a white item and let it sit. It usually works when nothing else will.

Hi T.:
I have had a similar problem and found a great help with a product called MelaBrite. It is a very concentrated product, Ithink 6 times concentrated, and is excellent in getting the stains out from my two active sons clothes. I will give you their web site and you can check it for yourself - it works great for me and I had given up hope!
Hope this might be helpful.
www.gogreenwebcast.com/support
I also found their laundry soap, Mela Power is also 6 x concentrated and it is wonderful - I bought one container for about $12.00 and I am still usingit 3 months later - same container. Our clothes have never been cleaner and brighter.
Hope this will be of some help to you. Don't give us, clothes are too expensive to send to the goodwill if you can salvage them.

Try Dawn liquid dishwashing detergent. Just put it on the spot and let a sit for a while and wash. It works on grape koolaid and other stains. If you son gets paint (from preschool art) on his clothes, don't put any stain remover on it. Most preschools use washable paint and markers. If you put a stain remover on it, it sets the mark into the fabric.
I have worked in a preschool for 9 years.

Natures Miracle really works well. Put it directly on the spot, let set for a few minutes and wash normally. Good luck!

This is easy! I make a paste using my liquid laundry soap and oxiclean. Rub the paste on the stain with an old toothebrush. LET SET FOR 2 days. Then wash. Check the stain before putting in dryer, if it is still there repeat. I have 2 kids and have removed everything from tomato sauce from clothes that sat in the attic for 4 years, to mud, blood, tomato sauce, etc.

I recommend Spray and Wash (which contains Resolve). I usually spray the stain with Spray & Wash, let it sit overnight, then wash it in as warm water as the fabric will tolerate. I also recommend All Baby Detergent. Somehow the combination of Spray & Wash and All Baby gets even my tablecloth clean. It's worked on ketchup, spaghetti sauce, chocolate and even balsamic vinegar.

Good luck.

Melaleuca (melaleuca.com) fan here - their PreSpot works by live enzymes - not harsh chemicals...enzymes eating the soil. Safe to let it set and work before any wash. (It's six times concentrated - so that bottle lasts a very long time - so is the MelaPower laundry detergent - less money than leading Tide!)

I've heard moms talk about taking baby clothes out of the attic after a few years and still getting spots/stains out with PreSpot. Amazes me.

BE SURE to know many stain removers will continue to work with repeated washings. My mom taught me that 30 some years ago...just becasue it doesn't come out the first time...it may with two or three washings. You were wise not to dry the clothes...but sometimes that doesn't finalize this repeat method - voice of experience.

Hi T.,

I like OxiClean. I use a large scoop in a bathroom sink full of the hot water and let it sit over night. I've gotten out baby stains that appeared after storage. SOmetimes, spaghetti sauce doesn't come out completely, but ti takes out most of the others.

Good luck!

Best thing I've found is 'Totally Awesome', a cheap, all-purpose spray cleaner found at most dollar stores for $1 a bottle. Saliva and peroxide both help take out blood stains -- especially when it's fresh/wet. Bathroom cleaner with bleach can remove stains on white cotton or cotton-blend fabric.

Good luck!!

My grandmother uses a bar of Ivory soap. You wet the fabric and then rub th ebar of Ivory directly on the stained area. Then hang it out in direct sunlight. Works pretty well.

Hi T.
In addition to pretreating the stains, I also use Oxiclean. Drop a scoop of this in with your detergent, this has helped our stains. For the all white clothing, I use bleach. Don't use this if your child has a skin sensitivity to it.
Good luck!

I only use kid/enviro friendly cleaners in my home so the stain remover I use us called Nature Bright by Shaklee. You have to order it. I have even got out stains on my kids clothes that were over a year old...unpacking clothes from the attic for the next child.

I have heard the reg. Dawn dishwashing detergent works on stains, but I have not tried it b/c it does not fall in the list of friendly cleaners.

Hope you get the stains out.

Wet the stain. Rub in Oxy Clean (I use the powder) directly on the stain. Get it really good. Take a toothbrush to it. Then let it sit. You can also soak it in water with Oxy Clean. If it's a stubborn stain, repeat or soak it longer. Seriously...it gets everything out! I've given up on stain removers. This is the only thing I use. It works great.

For food and blood stains that contain proteins, you need something with enzymes. I pulled all my old baby clothes out of storage and they had developed breastmilk stains. So I used liquid Era detergent. I diluted it by about half, completely saturated the stains, left them sitting like that for about 2 days, then ran them through cold water wash a couple of times to get all the soap out. Worked great! Oxyclean usually works on what the enzymes dont work on, so try that after for anything that is still stained. But too much oxyclean will bleach stuff.

I swear by Oxiclean spray and sometimes just washing it in cold then warm and vice versa helps with stains, but the best way is to spray the heck out of it the minute it happens or at least the day of the spill. Good luck.

I usually use Shout and Clorox 2. I have had good results with the off brand from wal-mart also. On the blood you can try pouring hydrogen peroxide on it and let it sit to see if foams up. If it does foam up keep applying it until the blood is gone. The other thing I do is take an old toothbrush with laundry detergent and rub it in. I usually do this with the Clorox and Shout also. You can do it all at the same time. Sometimes you have to do it for a couple of times to get the stains out. We used to use the older stained clothing for outside play clothes, art clothes or any time they were going to be really messy. I prefer Tide detergent, for our family it seems to work the best and we have had sensitive skin issues also.

Whatever you try - shout, spray & wash, or any other special product - put it on and leave it for 24 hours before washing it. One Mom here on mamasource suggested that and it has made a big difference on the stains coming out.
