Laundry Detergent Other than Dreft

I used Dreft with my daughter up until a year old. I'm now due with #2 in a month and I'm wondering what everyone has used with an High Efficiency washer since they don't make Dreft in HE formula. Do you just pick one that has no scents? My daughter didn't have any allgery issues.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I will try the Tide HE Free - I've seen it in the stores and thought it might be a good subsitute.

I use All Free and Clear and have never had a problem. I use it for my son's clothes as well as my husband and I. It is much less expensive.

I use the Kirkland HE from Costco, it is only about $10 for a large bottle and I buy the perfume and dye free. My daughter has sensitive skin and this has never bothered her.

ECOS or 7th Generation are good ones. Go to a Better Health or Whole Foods store. They have agood assortment and usually without perfumes or dyes.

IMO - Dreft is a complete waste of money. Especially if your child doesn't have any allergies or anything! Why not use 1 soap for everyone's clothes?

Just use something with no scent and no dyes. Should be fine. It's the dyes and perfumes that give the real problems.

Meijer makes a 'Naturals' detergent for HE washers. Also, there is one by ECO that I use. It boasts 100 loads, where all the other HE brands do like 32 or something and it doesn't cost any more then the other ones!

Dear S.. Only use an HE detergent. They are specially formulated to work with front loading, low water usage machines. If you don't use an HE detergent, too many suds could form and this can affect performance, cause delays in washing cycles and make it hard for the machine to rinse the clothes properly. You may want to try Arm & Hammer Essentials Laundry Detergent HE Dye & Perfume free. Then you can wash your entire family's clothes together and not worry. It looks like you have gotten a lot of good options from the mothers on this site. Just make sure to try an HE detergent. Congratulations on your upcoming bundle of joy and good luck!

I never used any special detergent's for my girls. We just used whatever detergent we used for our clothes. I had issues with doing a load of whites for the adult clothes and a separate load for my daughter (waste of water & energy). I didn't like the way Dreft cleaned the adult clothes either (tried it in the beginning). You could look for a dye & scent free detergent if you felt that you needed to though.

Target sells 7th Generation. It is a 'green' cleaner, very similar to the Method brands. It is also an HE. I am not sure if it has any scents as I use the Method brand currently (I really like it!) As it is a 'Green' laundry cleaner, it should be safe for allergies.
Also, everyone can develop an allergy to anything. It sometimes takes time and exposure to have them show up. (such as my dust allergy - never had it until now.)

Our pediatrician told us not to bother with Dreft because it's a gimmick. And don't fret because when I found out that I was pregnant and started getting baby things I would only wash her clothes in dreft as well. The main thing with babies is to get something hypoallergenic if sensitive skin runs in the family, if not I would use what ever you are already using. We have an HE washer and dryer and use Tide HE. I love it and it seems to work well for everyone!

Hi S.
Just an FYI the HE formulas are made to be less sudsing, so you can use the regular formulas in HE (front load ) washers. I would just do 1-2 extra rinses to make sure all the soap is out and I would check around because I thought I saw a Draft HE formula at one of the stores I shop at --M.

Hi S. -

I have a HE washer and dryer and I use dreft for my little one's clothing. I use half the regular amount, and often I will do a second rinse. You can also use the same soap you use for the rest of the family..just make sure it gets a second rinse! My DD is 9 months old now, and I just yesterday finished using one of the huge containers of Dreft. Most HE washers will take any soap, just if it suds too much the cycle will pause to allow the bubbles to burst. Good Luck!

I like to try to use as many "natural" products as possible and also try to buy from companies that are against animal testing :) So, we use Seventh Generation Baby which is free of dyes or scents. Method also had a Baby 'version' that has a nice, soft lullabye scent. Both are labeled for HE. The only thing I have found with the Method products is poor packaging. The bottle of laundry soap I had leaked around the cap which was kind of a pain (dishsoap and toilet cleaner did the same thing).

Hi S.,
I'm so glad to answer this! The very best, safest, natural laundry product is made by Shaklee. My daughter uses it in her HE machine for my 3 grandchildren and loves it.It works great in a HE machine and is chemical free. Dreft actually has some chemicals in it. Just to clarify, most laundry detergents are petroleum based and full of chemicals, even if they aren't fragranced. We also love Shaklee's Nature Bright, laundry booster- it works better than Oxyclean. My daughter soaked old, stained baby clothes in it and they came out looking new.
Children are so vulnerable to all of the chemicals in consumer products. If you can spare 18 minutes, please view a CBC report on household chemicals. Go to www.theglobalsuccessteam.net and click on 'Toxic Brew'. They talk about laundry products and Clorox wipes, Lysol spray, etc. Every young mom should see this. Another good website is www.concernedmoms.com. This has good links to Mt. Sinai Children's Environmental Health Center, etc. Another 5 minute clip is at www.realdirtonclean.com- click on Oprah's picture-this is from her Earth Day show. Please get back to me if green stuff interests you- I would love to help you. Check out my Mamasource business, M. Goes Green! or send me a message back.
My daughter in law is expecting in Ypsilanti in Dec. and they got the new book "Green Goes with Everything"by Sloan Barnett and found it to be a very good resource-on Amazon for about $13.
Best wishes!

I would try washing the babies clothes right along with the rest of the laundry using whatever detergent you normally use.

I use Tide and from day 1 washed my duaghters clothes in Tide and she had no problems.

My son has excema- we dont know what causes it but it is not the laundry detergent as I always use Tide and he didnt breat out until he was over a year old.

With all the laundry that you will be doing for 2 kids.. just do whatever is easiest..

HI S.,

Ecos laundry detergent is great. You can get it at health food stores and places like Whole Foods. I literally only use a drizzle in HE machines, it lasts such a long time.

Also, I know you are almost due with #2, but if you happening to be looking for a great birthing method, I teach HypnoBirthing, a gentle relaxed way of birthing. If my website looks compelling at all, I can teach you accelerated classes to prepare you before baby comes. I teach out of Oxford and Rochester. www.YourPeacefulBirthing.com
