Laser or Dermabrasion Scar

My daughter has a slight scar on her cheek from a fingernail scratch when she was a baby. The scar color has faded back to pretty much normal skin color, but it has a slight indent that is only visible in certain bright lights. I am considering doing a laser revision or some type of dermabrasion. Has anyone tried these on their child? Thanks for the advice.

What can I do next?

Why would you do this to your child?
It's her body. You say yourself you can hardly see a scar but it obviously bothers you more than it bothers her.

Use vitamin e oil on it and let it go. Always use sunscreen!

As for the slightly chipped tooth in your other question. .. Normal mom. The dentist can file it if necessary.

What you are talking about is purely cosmetic. It's not like you are repairing scars from some accident or something.

I sure hope you are not projecting your opinion of these minute imperfections toward your daughter. If so, you might be looking at the next plastic surgery addict by the time she's a teen.

Be realistic.... Love your child for who she is. No one is perfect, no one will be perfect so why put that pressure on her due to your insecurities? Get a reality check. Stat!

Think of it as a dimple.
She's fine as she is.

I have a scar on my forehead (think Harry Potter) from a cut I got when I was learning to walk. It has really faded and is only visible when the light hits it just right. I also work for a facial plastic surgeon. My advice? Leave it alone.

Chances are that there isn't anything that can be done to fix it anyway and what you have described sounds like it isn't something anyone else would notice. Give it more time and you may not be able to see it at all.

I would not subject my child to any sort of treatment for such a minor issue--first, as I said there is probably not anything that could be done, but laser treatments carry the risk of hypopigmentation or other problems that may make it worse rather than better. If you daughter is bothered by this when she is older, then look into treatment, but for now, let it be.

It is not necessary to fix a slight indent that is only visible in certain bright lights. Lasers and dermabrasion can be very useful, but for something so very minor you actually might cause more damage than you would fix. There are risks to those things.

Bodies do not remain perfect. Nor should they. Let it go.

How old is she? If she's under 17 then please don't even bother wasting money at a doc's office. If she was disfigured it would be another thing but this sounds minimal at best. My daughter was severely scarred from chicken pox. I worried all the time that she'd have massive problems as she got older.

She ended up only having one scar, in her eye area, and the rest of her skin is fine. As she grew her skin changed and became finer.

I think it is FINE to help your daughter with a scar. However, I would wait until she is older to see how the scar ends up looking with older skin. Lots of childrens' scars fade to nothing.

Fixing a scar is just like straightening teeth. Just because it's done with the help of a plastic surgeon or dermatolgist instead of a dental specialist doesn't make it any different. The point is to wait until it's most appropriate to do it.
