Las Vegas - Things to Do with Two Five Year Olds?

I'll be heading to Las Vegas in a few weeks with my two five year old girls and a few other family members. I've read the AAA book on Las Vegas and several travel websites, so I have a good list of what to do... Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, Circus Circus, tiger/dolphin show at the Mirage, Bellagio fountains, etc.

I'm wondering if any of you have tips and/or hidden recommendations of things you enjoyed with your kids. Restaurants that were easy to get in and out of? If you didn't have a car, what was the best way to get around the Strip? How did your kids hold up to all the walking? Anything that we shouldn't miss? Thanks in advance for any advice!

What can I do next?

You mention Circus Circus, they actually have an arcade and circus act, as well as the Adventure Dome, which is as close as Vegas gets to a theme park.

There is another arcade at Excalibur and they have a dinner show, the Tournament of the Kings.

Our water park will not be open until May, but if you are familiar with the old Wet and Wild, they are rebuilding it off the strip.

You don't mention where you are staying so if you are near the Flamingo and find yourselves needing to take a nice stroll, there is a bird sanctuary toward the back of the Flamingo. You can get a scoop of ice cream and sit on the fountain wall and listen to the birds.

The TI has an outdoor pirate show and there is also the volcano show in the front of the Mirage (both free).

It is getting hot, so I suggest a little sun hat for both of them and make sure you keep them hydrated. Cotton clothes will be best while walking outdoors.

Here is the website to the red bus tour which is the double decker bus with the open deck on top. http://www.exploringlasvegas.com/kids.html They made it look like a party bus, but I just see regular people in there throughout the day.

The strip has a city bus as well as Max. Here are their sites.

Both are run by Clark County Regional Transportation.

Here is the monorail which is situated downtown.

There may be something going on at the Fremont Experience, which also has zip lining available. Here is their website.

Here are a few other scheduled events:

There is a roller coaster (upside down) at the New York New York and more rides a the top of the Stratosphere.

There are some street performers as you would see in Venice Beach, however, the county was trying to taper that down. I am not sure if they are still out there. As well, don't accept handouts on the strip and let the little ones know not to reach out to the street vendors handing things out. Unfortunately, they hand out vulgar cards/passes and people accept them and then drop them on the ground. Again, the county is trying to get ahold of these vendors, but they are fighting it with freedom of speech. I am not sure where they are with all of this.

I forgot to mention a couple of things. There is the new Children's Discovery Museum. We had one that was a bit run down, but they just opened a new one on Grand Central and Benneville.

There is also the Spring Mountain Preserve off of the strip. They often have different events for the kids, you will have to check their schedule.

Pinball Hall of Fame off the strip. http://www.pinballmuseum.org/

There are the Imax theaters and the Smith's Center you may want to check out.

Have fun.

My son lives outside Vegas in Summerlin so we go there quite a bit. Last year we took out grandsons who were four and five and they loved it. There are things everywhere in Vegas. Their favorite things were the people dressed up like the superheros. They still swear that the guy dressed like Spiderman is the real Spiderman. He told them that he swings from building to building, etc. They fell for it big time. The other absolute must with kids your age is Red Rock Canyon. I am not a nature lover normally but that place is beautiful and so much fun for the kids. Its like $10.00 a car and you get hike around and see the beautiful scenery. The kids always love swimming and just being with their families. Have fun!

Lots of good suggestions already. I would also suggest M&M's World. To get around I would recommend buying a bus pass. It was funtaking the double decker bus up and down the strip, and it was an excellent value. It will not only get you up and down the strip, but you can get to the malls with it as well.

I think it would be very difficult to walk from hotel to hotel. They are actually very far apart and I think it would be hard for five year olds to walk that far. You might want to consider a taxi when they start to tire out. Caeser's Palace had a very cool shopping area (it has been about 8 yrs since i have been to Vegas) The ceiling changes and the Roman statues do an animated show in the middle of the shopping mall. Have fun on your trip.

You've received a lot of good answers.

There are many buffet style/ all you can eat restaurants. These are really easy to get in and out of, as they are self serve. If I remember right, they had discount kid meals too.

Can you consider a trip to the grand canyon? 5 is old enough to take it in. There are a number of excursions from Vegas to the grand canyon. It can be done as a day trip.

Good luck to you and yours,
F. B.

If you ever go to Vegas again red rock casino resort. Is great for kids. Google it. 20 min from strip but there are lots of families. Car rental reasonable in Vegas and everywhere is free valet parking. . It has a bowling alley, movie theater awesome pool. Also kids quest is state of the art childcare. My kids beg to go. If u take them to kids quest a photo copy of immunization records is needed. They have in kids quest climbing area, cafe, I pad center, crafts, arcade games. If your child will fit in a stroller bring it the blocks are long! Also the dolphin tour at mirage is really special we did the dolphin encounter where kids got to pet dolphins and the tour very educational. U may buy tickets at mirage.com. Need to buy in advance.
