Knot of Some Sort Found....

Just the other day my son was sitting in my lap and turned his head to the left. I visibily could see a round bump/knot half way between his ear and top of his shoulder on his neck. I felt it and it moved and was hard. I checked his other side (his left) and did not feel anything.

I unfortunately missed my dr's office to make an appointment. Will be calling first thing Monday if they are not closed. But in the meantime, I was curious to see if other mom's have found the same thing or dealt with this....what was their findings? Is it his glands or lymph noids?

Thanks!

UPDATE 2/14 - My son was sick with a sinus cold about a week ago. It may be due to that, but first thing monday i am calling my dr. to have him ck'd for that and his spine (bump there too).

What can I do next?

Hi there,
My oldest has two on the side of his neck that are hard and move. The doctor said as long as they are not fixed in one place and move, they were nothing to worry about. Years later, they are still there and pronounced when he is ill. So far he is fine.

Years ago, I found a similar knot in one of my lymph nodes. I wasn't ill, so I was a little concerned. I went to my doctor, and it turned out that I had a small scratch on my head from a barrette I left in my hair overnight. The small cut caused my lymph node to swell up a little. There was nothing to worry about it. The lymph node went back to normal in a couple of days. I would inspect your son's head to see if there are any small cuts or scrapes. It's probably nothing to worry about.

My first son (now 17) had these types of knots. They really bothered me when he was little. His doctor said lymph noids and they eventually went un-noticeable.

most likely it's a lymph node - everyone has this train of lymph nodes that run along the sides of the neck that can be felt, almost like rubber balls under the skin. Sometimes when there is a localized infection, the lymph node is put to work, creating antibodies and other good stuff to help our bodies. In this case they may feel kind of hard. If it doesn't go away though, please tell your doctor about it, just to be on the safe side.
good luck!

Yes it does sound like a lymph node. My daughter had the same thing and we found out (after going through all kinds of cold medications) that she is allergic to cats. Now the swelling has gone way down, but not all the way. It takes several months to go away completely after getting rid of the cats. She also had a stuffed up nose a lot of the time. She would wake up and could barely breathe. Well, I hope this helps. Oh, the doctor said that because the knot moved around, it wasn't cancerous. This was an ear, nose, and throat specialist. Once we went to an allergist, we discovered she is actually allergic to cats. Her regular doctor kept thinking it was dairy products and gave her antihistimines and nose sprays and took her off of milk. Just go to an allergist and they can find out after a visit or two. Hope this helps.

That sort of stuff really freaks me out! However, that happened to my niece and it was just a lymph node...
I am sure that is what it is..

When I was a child I had a bump like that right over where my adam's apple would have been (if I'd been a boy). I found out years later that my mom was scared to death it was cancer. It turned out to be a sebaceous (sp?) cyst. Through the years I've had them come and go from time to time. Obviously, you need to go to the doctor to be sure, but I just wanted to let you know that it might be nothing.

Good luck!

Don't panic. My son got one just like this that has never gone away. What caused his was a reation to mosquito bites on his neck and face, and that bump is a lymph node that reacts. The doctor said that sometimes they go back to normal and other times they dont. Since you son just had a sinus cold, it most probably is due to that. It doesn't hurt to check with the pediatrician, not don't fret over the weekend.

A few years ago, we kind of experienced the same thing with my daughter. At the time she was about 1 a year or so. It was like, one minute she was fine and the next she had this big knot right about where you discribed. My husband freaked out a little bit and we took her to the ER. The doctor told us it was a swollen lymph noid that could have been caused by anything. Being sick, a cat scratch, etc. He wasn't all that happy with what the doctor told us and the following day, we saw her doctor. He said that it was nothing and we didn't need to worry. A few short days later, it was gone. She, really, didn't seem to notice at all.

Has he been sick lately? My son was sick a couple weeks ago and now has a bump behind his ear which is a swollen lymph node. It doesn't seem to bother him. The dr. said it will be there for a while. It's still worth getting checked out, but my guess is that's what it is.

Hi there from what you describe it sounds like a lymph node - small non-tender and mobile? It is usually about the size of a pea or slightly more and can come after a bout of tonsillitis, ear infections etc. and they will often stay for what seems like for ever! The next time you are seeing your pediatrician just let him/her see it and as long as you dont see any others it is thought to be normal. My son who is now 15 had them from an early age and in fact has two, and they have grown up with him and are still there!

Hi!

How scary for you to go all weekend before knowing what that is!

Obviously, you will keep a watch of it all weekend. If it goes away, it probably is a lymphnode, which I hear is very common especially in cold & flu season.

If I were you, I would have it checked out for sure. Just "feel it" really good and make sure you have an excellent description of it in case it disappears before the appointment. I would even try to "size it" if you can, with a marble, or ball or something.

I hope everything goes OK for him. I'll say a prayer for you guys this weekend.

Oh, please don't freak out just yet. When my daughter was two she had that and I took her to Kaiser right away. He smiled and said it was just a glad that was clogged (or something) and as long as it did not get bigger in 6 months not to worry. Well, of course, I watched it like a hawke and it slowly went away.
Good luck!
I would always consult the dr but don't worry just yet!
