Kindle Fire for Children...

My four and a half year old daughter has asked for an iPad for Christmas from Santa. Obviously I am not going to get her an iPad for Christmas, but I have been looking into getting the Leapfrog Leappad or the Vtech Innotab, since they are both children's tablets. After a lot of research and reading a lot of reviews, it seems like a lot of parents end up purchasing a Kindle Fire instead, stating that it is cheaper in the long run than purchasing one of the children's tablets when you factor in purchasing games, a case and any apps. Is there anybody out there that has chosen the Kindle Fire over a children's tablet? If so, why? Or is there anybody that has a Kindle Fire for their kids, why do they love it? Why do you love it?

What can I do next?

My kids got them for Christmas last year. Best. Gift. Ever.

They read, play, and watch movies. They take them on trips, use them in their rooms, and even use them to help with homework. They can get tons of things for free with Amazon Prime. They have gotten kids electronics in the past, but they lose interest quickly. These are almost a year old and still used all the time. I HIGHLY recommend them.

My kids were 4, 6, and 8 when they got them. My niece is 3 and getting one for Christmas this year.

Technically it's MY Kindle Fire. In practice my 4 1/2 year old is the one who has it 90% of the time!

We don't have TV, but we DO have NetFlix...between that and all the apps it gets a LOT of use!

My grand kids parents got them Kindle Fires last year for Christmas, they are 3 and 4. They used and used them and still are using them daily. They love their applications.

I think they are well worth the price tag.

We just went through this discussion in our house. Both my husband and I have Kindle Fires and my dtr is turning 5 next month. We ended up getting a leappad 2 for her birthday. My daughter is not rough with toys at all and has really never had a problem with dropping things BUT after much thought we decided that to spend $199 on a Fire that is not built to withstand drops/falls etc could be foolish. Additionally, the number of high quality educational games for the Fire is pretty minimal (I've downloaded a lot of programs for my daughter for my fire) whereas the Leappad is mostly high quality educational games. Yes, you'll spend more with the leappad, but it might withstand a young child better and give her more educational experiences. Either way she's going to love whatever she gets because she just wants to be like you. =)

We bought a Kindle Fire at Christmas last year. My 10-year-old son loves it, and uses it to play games and watch videos. It's great for entertaining him at restaurants and the grocery store. My husband is careful to download only apps and games that have good reviews, are free or very cheap, and don't allow the players to buy things with real money inside the game. One problem with last year's version was that there was no way to have separate accounts for kids and adults using the kindle. So if my son wants to read a picture book, he is going to have to pick it out of a list of my romance novels.
It has some limitations compared with a cell phone or computer(might be a plus for kid's use)-No camera or microphone, so you couldn't use it for something like skype. You can add a word processor app, but it wouldn't be perfect for homework since you'd have to email the document to a real computer to print. I wish there was a way to give my son a certain amount of screen time on it and then have it turn off(we did an an alarm clock app). The next version is supposed to have a way to limit the amount of time the user spends on it.

my husband and i have kindle fires... we love them, although he is going to sell his and get the new ipad mini. we got an ipod touch when my daughter was 3 1/2 off of craigslist and she still uses it (she's almost 6 now) and my 2 1/2 year old also uses it. so... i would say, check out craigslist! :) if you want something new.. there is also the Nabi http://www.bestbuy.com/site/nabi+-+nabi+2+Tablet+-+8GB+Me... that is preloaded with lots of fun stuff.. supposed to be great and is the same cost as a new kindle fire

My guy is 3.5 and loves my Kindle. I'm seriously thinking of giving it to him when I get the new Fire HD. You have to make sure you block the web by using the parental controls and a password. The first day I had mine I hadn't thought that far ahead and received 2 messages from Amazon about my orders...he'd ordered two new Thomas and Friends engines...he had just turned 3! (I was able to cancel both orders.) Being Amazon they have it set for one-click purchasing to make it ultra-easy.

But he loves the apps and books I've gotten him (all free, I've never paid for any for him or me) and will sit quietly entertained, say, while I have a mani/pedi. I've also looked at children's tablets for him and am not impressed, mainly with the cost of the software over time. I think I'd rather spend the money on Amazon Prime, wipe off my books and apps, and allow him to watch movies, play games and read on the Kindle. Over time I believe you'd be happier with a Kindle for your daughter than Leappad or Innotab.

My "neice" got one for her 5th birthday and she uses it all the time. There's a lot of good learning apps you can get for it as well as games and coloring. My son has an iPad, so I don't know first hand.

I own a Fire. My 1 and 2 year old daughters play with apps on it. The screen is easy to break so they're only allowed to use it sitting down and with supervision. It'd be great for a 4 year old, though.

We did this summer for when we travel! Our 7 year old daughter loves it and so do we! She can play all the games that is on the iPAD, A lot of art and educational ones the iPAD doesnt have, READ KIDS BOOKS really easy, watch movies or TV shows. Plus it is way less expensive than the iPAD. I think it might be tougher too... she has dropped it a bunch of times and it has been fine.

Both my kids have last year's version - I bought them rather than getting a video game system. They both LOVE them. I became a prime member for $75 bucks and that paid for itself in the free 2-day shipping (I buy quite a bit from Amazon) so they can download a lot of movies/TV shows for free. There are tons of kids books/and books for grown ups that are free, they only ever download the free apps. They also connect to our home wifi and go to some kid-friendly websites and watch you-tube videos.

The new kindle fire is much better, and I think it has some sort of parental limit thing where you can limit screen time. It also has a camera so you can skype.

Also, Amazon customer service is amazing. I bought the warranty, and when I had trouble (kids and electronics ya know?) they replaced the devices no questions asked. Had new ones shipped within 2 days.
