Kids Eating Sushi

I was looking online at Melissa&Doug toys, my kids love them, and I saw a sushi set that I thought was cute. I read the reviews on it and so many people said how they love sushi and their kids do as well. So it got me to thinking how many kids actually eat sushi. I have tried it several times and I absolutely cannot stomach the ones where a raw slice of fish is just laying over a mound of rice. I can, however, eat the rolls, like the california roll and others that I don't really know the names of. I can see why kids might like to eat sushi, but I never even thought to have my kids try it. I was just curious as to how many of your kids eat sushi and what types do you let them eat. My husband and I have a favorite japanese/sushi restaurant that we only go to on our rare date nights, but it would be great to take the kids sometime! Thanks!

I love sushi and my kids LOOOOVE sushi, like they like it more than I do. It's insane. They bed for it. They will eat anything but their favorite is the Calforinia roll (I like it because it's cheaper)... but I let them eat whatever their palette desires :)

My kids love it! Squid salad is my 7-year olds favorite! He'll eat a full bowl and maybe some California roll. My 5-year old will try just about anything, and likes just about everything we give him. They might suprise you:)

My nephew has loved sushi since about 3 years old (he is now 17). My 5 year old daughter now loves it, so now I don't want to take her to sushi restaurants because she'll steal my food! It's so healthy, expensive, but so worth it. Except for the cost - McDonald's vs. sushi? Fresh food wins out, no doubt.

My kids are 2 and 5 and they both like sushi. We tried sticking to the cooked stuff for quite a while, but the 5 year old loves tuna rolls (the 2 year old is still eating cooked stuff). They both LOVE using chopsticks.

I spent half my childhood in Japan... so I grew up eating sushi. It's like growing up eating sammies. Just plain normal. My son and I eat Japanese food several times a week; udon, tempura, miso soup, onigiri, mochi, sunamono, katsu... and we go out for sushi once every 2 weeks. It's only $10 each for what we order... so barely more expensive than McDonalds.

Kids often have such acute pallets that the veggies we give them straight in western cuisine is often overwhelming to them. As Amanda mentioned... most kids who hate veggies WILL eat veggie sushi or sushi with veggies in them. They're cut fine, often lightly misted with sweet rice wine vinegar, and very subtle. Similar to how a kid who won't touch a salad will eat lettuce, onion, tomato on a burger.

My 3 yr old likes California rolls and the crab rolls. He's a huge fan of sushi and loves to eat it when we order it. We don't do any of the "raw" fish with him yet, but we will in the near future! Give it a shot- they will love the flavors and textures!

We just had sushi last night. Got a to go platter from this great Japanese deli and ate it in front of the Baseball game, so fun (except our Giants lost, another story). My girls stick to the gentle stuff, CA roll, Spicy tuna etc. I steamed some brocoli and serve edemame too. Chopsticks make it fun and you can't get more healthy, YUM!

All six of mine love sushi. The 22 month old still only gets the cooked kind, but everyone from the 5 year old up likes almost every type of sushi they've ever tried; raw or cooked. They can all use chopsticks, too. My 7 year old likes eating my home made ramen with chopsticks. He's a wild one. ;)

I also make sushi, sometimes, though never raw (can't get a high enough quality of fish to risk it at home). That cuts the cost a TON.

My daughter has been eating all sushi since she was two. Anything. We're big sushi eaters, but cut back to once p/week. She's almost five and uses the "helpers" for her chop sticks. FYI, for the younger set, the chopsticks are great for learning how to form shapes and letters.

My seven-year-old loves edamame and miso soup. She also likes vegetable rolls (cucumber, avocado, squash).

She is not too keen on seaweed; the restaurant we go to will use soy wrappers on request, and she loves those.

My daughter's first favorite food was sushi. At first (when she was under a year) I just left out the fish. Then it was just cooked fish. Now, she eat's actual sushi and LOVES it. My other child despises it.

Here in Hawaii, we have so many of those kinds of foods.
My kids since toddlerhood, have eaten sushi.... as well as "poke" which is like raw seasoned fish. And they eat sashimi too.
As well as many other types of 'rawness' on sushi.
They are fine.
It has been fine.
My kids love it.
It is the hodge podge of cultural foods we have here and is the norm.

My friend's 5yo son looooves sushi and crabmeat, would eat it every day.

Another friend of mine starting macking mock sushi - she pounds out a slice of bread, coats it in a cream cheese sauce, layers veggies on it, rolls it up and slices it. Her kids love it. I'm hoping my son will start enjoying those as well.

Yes, absolutely. Please make sure the meat is cooked, you can start them off with vegetable roll and training chopsticks. We just attended 4th bday party held at floor seatting Asian restaurant and all the kids used their grown up chopsticks and were familiar with Asian tradition ( none of them were Asian decent) very cultural.

My daughter eats sushi, and has since she was around 5 - in addition to the rolls she will eat the slab of raw fish over the rice. I will do that but only with salmon or tuna (which is interesting b'cuz I don't like either of those fish cooked!!!).

There is a restaurant here in Chicago ("Orange" - which is fabulous) that has "frushi" - they use infused flavored sticky rice and fruit. So you might have coconut rice and then a slice of pineapple on top. They get real creative and it's quite cute. I always thought it would be a good way to get your kid used to eating food that looks that way - one time they did blueberry sticky rice with a slice of watermelon and it looked almost identical to sushi. Or they will do a roll - with the rice on the outside and slices of cantelope in the middle.

My 6 year old loves sushi, and has for a couple of years -- it's her very favorite food, and the local sushi restaurant is what she chooses for her birthday dinner. She'll eat just about any type, though she prefers sashimi (the slices of raw fish served on a bowl of rice) to sushi. She's not very fond of the rolls -- she doesn't like the seaweed, and will pick it off or eat around it.
