Kidney Stones While Pregnant - Lewisville,TX

I am 6 months pregnant with my 3rd baby, and had what I thought was a horrible UTI. Later that night, things progressed to a HORRIBLE pain in my back. I couldn't even stand up, and the pain was so bad that I was vomiting and sweating. I went straight to the hospital, at the advice of my OB, and they hae confirmed that I have a kidney infection and a kidney stone. I am on pain medicine (authorized as safe through my OB) and am still in the hospital, waiting for the stone to pass. If it doesn't, I'm told that they will have to insert a stint. Does anyone else have experience with this problem occurring during pregnancy? I would greatly appreciate any advice from someone who's walked that walk! Thanks!

What can I do next?

I am 35 weeks pregnant and last week was in the hospital for a kidney stone also. I passed one when I was 4 months so I know the feeling already. Unfortunately they can't do much for you but wait for it to pass. I believe it is in my bladder but I can't seem to pee it out, and it burns so much when I'm done using the bathroom it almost feels like it's bleeding inside. It even burns when I'm sitting. I've had so many complicatons with this pregnancy, from gestational diabetes to liver problems so I'm ready to get this over with. I tired the lemon juice yesterday and I haven't felt anything yet, I'm hoping I can pass this stone soon!!!! Any advice anyone on the burning sensation????

Long, long ago I came home with a new baby and suffered what you just described. I was headed for the hospital and decided to nurse before I left. The pain disappeared, but over the years I have had more kidney stones than I care to remember. Last year I had about 8 lithotripsey proceedures. I had stents in both ureters and they are NO FUN. If you must have one, at least ask for a pediatric size stent which is much more comfortable but could slip out of place. I had one that did and one that didn't. I felt sick constantly until the stents were removed. If you turn over in bed, they can shift position. The pain is less than extreme kidney stone pain, but 24/7 uncomfortable. I'm going to speculate for a moment and tell you that I suspect kidney stone problems in pregnancy based on the high potency vitimans and some women's inability to process calcium. Call me crazy. Drink lemonade and cranberry juice and lots of water for natural relief and hopefully you will pass this stone without the aid of medical science.
Best of luck with this awful challenge,
C. S.

For my first and only pregnancy so far we were at the movie theater about to watch X-men (I believe) I had to go to the ladies room and my hubby went to go get popcorn and drink and when I went to bathroom I was bleeding and felt cramps so of course I thought I was going to miscarriage or had. I came out of restroom crying and needless to say we did not see movie and walked to car with popcorn, nachos and drink. Wonder what we looked like to other people (what did they just come here to buy food). So doc said to go to hospital-turns out I passed a stone and after some testing I had kidney stones in both kidneys. Small enough to pass but needless to say weeks later on I ended back in hospital for about 2 days cause pain was sooo bad. Drink water, drink water drink water. They say after you have the baby your pee changes and that in many cases the kidney stones then dissappear. Good luck though I feel your pain. The last time I was in hospital with such bad pain my nurse had asked my pain scale and weight but when giving me medicine did not put something into her count scale (in determining how much pain medicine to put straight into iv) so all of a sudden I saw black and dots everywhere and VERY hot and when my doc came in and I told her she found out the nurse had overdosed me-GREAT but felt no pain.

I had kidney stones in pregnancy with 3 of my 6 kids. So much depends on the kind of stone it is (mine was calcium) and how big it is. Mine were small enough to pass eventually, but still very painful until it did. Once it passed, I was fine as though nothing had happened. I passed two stones the second time around (child #3), one in the hospital and the other at home about a week later. It was only in pregnancies that I had stones.

Oh Girl I know how you feel! I was 17 weeks pregnant when I was hospitalized with a stone. Mine was still trying to get out of my kidney and was the size of a quarter. It could not go anywhere. I talked to my urologist and OB/GYN and on their advice I had the procedure. The urologist went in orthoscopically and as he put it "blasted" the stone. I only had to pass very small pieces and I did not feel them. I was in the hospital for 5 days. Mine started off feeling like a UTI as well. But oh my, the pain was unbearable. Send me a message if you have any questions. Feel better soon!
