I agree with Carrie. I too have had them removed and a stent put in. It is PAINFUL! Mine got stuck in the passage way to the bladder and I had to call my husband to leave work early and take me to the hospital. On the way there it was so bad that he pulled over a police officer and had them call an ambulance. I thought I was having a baby, only instaed of coming home with a new bundle of joy, you get a long blue tube in your bladder instead. All I can say is make sure you get lots of pain meds! ALso, Squeeze a few drops of real lemon into your water each day, they say the acid in the lemon helps to break down the stone. I also drink one glass of cranberry juice every day. Good luck!

Couple schools of thought. Sometimes, too much caffine. I had a friend that had major stones about 2 weeks after drinking, (daily I might add, because she love the high) those really strong caffine boost drinks. ( Some are more sensitive than others.) Another thought is a deficiency of Calcium. or the "wrong kind" of calcium, and not enough magnesium. Even if they are made from calcium crystals, a DR might say stop the calcium, where a nutrionist will talk about taking something more balanced. When a person looks at all the things we eat that deplete the body of calcium, it makes sense why we get them. Pregnant women get them because the baby is using up the calcuim. Women who drink Cola's are calcum deficient. Do some research on your own and look into adjusting and balancing your diet so they don't come back again. Here is something that I kinow is 100%.
If you keep doing the same thing, you will get the same result.
Evaluate what some of your regular habits are and change one at a time ( unless you know some of them are really bad for you anyway. Our bodies are one big "chemistry" lab, and the trick is to figure out what might be causing it.

whoever said childbirth was the worst pain to experience had never battled a kidney stone! when i passed mine and the lab work done, it was found that they were calcium (which is pretty common). besided prescribing drinking more fluids, doc said to lay off caffeine and said that i should limit calcium intake (like dont chew on tums as a calcium supplement, drink too much milk, etc.) which i thought was crazy because as a woman arent we always getting pushed to increase our calcium intake to avoid osteoporosis. anyways, i told him that i didnt feel that my calcium consumption was anything to brag about but its all about metabolism, history, etc. so the end result of mine was that i still have some lurking according to the ct scan that could decide to descend at any time and there was no way to tell how long the one that i did pass were just kinda hanging out in the 'meat' of the kidneys before they dropped. not really sure if this was helpful but good luck.

Stay away from spinach. Drink LOTS of water! Water is your friend, drink until you float. Cranberry juice is good for you and good for your kidneys, if you can't drink it straight get the kind that has grape or raspberry, etc. Don't wait if you have pain, visit your doctor. =)

I had them about 6 years ago, they are awful, so I really feel for you. The only thing that got rid of them for me is going to a chiropracter who uses supplements. I was at the hospital and they couldn't get rid of them, so I went to my chiro who gave me a ton of supplements to take for 1 day every hour. The stones got dissolved and have not been back. I did however get sick from taking so many vitamins, but I'm small and just cut the dosage. ( I was already sick from the stones). By the end of the night I was much better.
Kidney stones are formed from too much calcium in the body or too little. Too much pop also causes them because it depletes the body of calcium. I'll give you the email of the chiropracter I use now(haven't been in a long time, though). I know Dr. Lee personally and she is wonderful. You can tell her R. Catania recommended you if you call. Check put her website. She worked at my old chiro. for a while. Good Luck.

K.,
You have been battling kidney stones for a couple months now and still haven't had them removed? Are you sure they're kidney stones? I am 24 now, and have had kidney stones 7 times, the first time being when I was 15!!!!!
But, every time I've had them, I get an achy irritating feeling down below, and within 2-3 days, I have the back pain so bad I'm in the hospital on an IV, it's inevitable.

Once I get in the hospital, it's usually at least a 2 week ordeal for me of being miserable. They keep me on an IV, pumping saline and the strongest drugs they've got into me, and if I don't pass the stone within a few days, they go in and remove it. I've had them removed 3 times. After they're removed, they insert a stent which stays in for around 7 days, and i'm miserable and in just as much pain the whole time (but at least i'm at home). When they take the stent out, the back pain and achy feeling comes immediately back and lasts for an additional 2-3 days. So how's that for fun huh?!?!?!

Depending on the kind of stones you have, they can be prevented simply by dramatically increasing your water intake and maybe even a special diet. (I was told to avoid grapefruit juice). But, with other stones, you can try to prevent them by drinking un-Godly amounts of water, but it's inevitable they'll form.....hopefully the water hopes to pass them though before you feel the effects. I believe majority of my stones have been calcium oxalate. Unfortunately, they don't dissolve and there isn't a pill out there I can take regularly to prevent them.

HOWEVER......if you're in to home remedies.......I have a really icky one that my urologist told me about. He had said another of his patients swears by it, and I was so desperate to feel normal, he leaked the information. Since then, I've done this home remedy 5 times, and it seemed to work 4 out of 5 of those times.

They sell the recipe on the internet for like $30, so I don't think I should reveal it here, but if you would like to email me at
____@____.com, I can give you the information.

I dealt with kidney stones a few years ago. I had a lot of back pain from the stones and pain in the front where your ureter is. I had what was called uric acid kidney stones, which meant a hormone in my body produces them, and they are not able to be found on ultrasounds, so I would need to have either an IVP or CT scan every time I think I have one. The doctors figured out I have them because I was getting UTIs every week, so they decided to test and see what was up. So from the start of my UTIs to when I had surgery to have them removed, it was a few months. The surgery was something I wouldn't wish upon anyone! (I had to have surgery because of the way it was positioned and how large they were, they had to zap the stone and then pull out the fragments) I was in so much pain because they had to put a tube, called a stent, in my ureter to keep it open, and I felt the pain from it all the time. When they pulled it out a few days later, it was excrutiating pain!
Here are a few good links to more info of the different types and how they are formed:

I have had kidney stones and think I still do all you can really do is drink lots of fluids. Alot of water. Lemonade helps break it down too.
Try to drink 6-8 (if not 12) full glasses of water a day. This helps to flush away substances that all kidney stones use to form. Limit your coffee, tea, and cola to 1-2 cups per day because the caffeine may actually cause you to lose fluid quickly and allow stones to form more easily. Eat only a moderate amount of foods containing oxalates (which include nuts, chocolates, and dark leafy vegetables, such as kale and spinach). Decreasing the amount of meat, legumes, and fish as well may help prevent stone formation.

I hope this helps
