Kidney Reflux, VUR, Other Moms Dealing with This Defect in Their Children?

Two of my children have kidney reflux. I get anxious about it this time of year as their annual testing (vcug/ultrasounds) are approaching. So far, they haven't had surgery, just take antibiotics every day. I wonder how long we should wait before we do decide to do the surgery. They have never had an infection, it was discovered on prenatal ultrasound so they've both been on antiobitocs since birth. My kids are 3 and 1 (my other child is older and never had KR).

I guess I am interested in hearing other's stories esp those whose kids outgrew it.

THanks!

What can I do next?

My second child, boy, has hydronophrosis.. which is almost the same thing.. different name, and his kidney did not drain. It was found at birth also.. he also had to take antibiotics. He is not 16 months.. it has gone from severe to moderate... so he is outgrowing it. He also no longer has to take antibiotics.

The specialist that we saw in Texas was really good. According to him there are people that live with it forever and never have to have surgery... it just has to be monitored. However, in children, especially boys, the norm is that eventually outgrown it through puberty.

Hope this gives you some relief!! Good luck!!

My daughter had kidney reflux, and we just found out about it over the summer. (She was 3) They said that the one side had a very low chance of her outgrowing it, so rather than having her on antibiotics for so long, we opted for the surgery. They also said that the younger they are the easier time they have. She did really well with it! We were pleasantly surprised! It was way better to take care of it rather than put her through another VCUG. (That was awful!) They had to do the regular surgery for one side, and while she was out they did the laproscopic one on the other side. It solved all of her problems, and if I was faced with the same decision, I would do it again! Good luck in your decision!

My son was also diagnosed w/ prenatal hydronephrosis. He just turned 5. He has had an annual ultrasound and we did some other testing earlier on (VCUG, renal scan). We were under the care of a specialist that I had a TON of confidence in, but we moved two years ago. The current specialist is just asking for one more renal scan "to be sure,' but I think it will show no concerns. Not that he 'got better,' but that it is a perfectly livable condition, with one kidney pulling a less-than-50% load. We'll know for sure in Jan. Over this period, he never go worse. He was stable. Hopefully that is true for your boys too.

We went off antibiotics long ago, like at 12 months. I'm surprised your 3-year-old is still on them, but your situation may be different. For example, our VCUG did not show urine refluxing back into the kidneys, and perhaps yours does.

My daughter was born with a Bladder Extrophy (bladder was on the outside) as well as Kidney reflux in both of her kidneys. She goes in every six months for ultrasounds to make sure her kidneys and bladder are healthy and descent size. My daughter has had multiple bladder infections which is why she is on medication every day. Our visits show despite the reflux, her kidneys look very healthy and at this point surgery isn't necessary. I had almost the same thing when I was a baby and at one years old I had to have a Bilateral Urethral Reimplantation because mine was a little more severe and had bad infections with high fever. My daughter on the other hand seems to be doing very well and will likely outgrow it, she is 6 years old now. It sounds like your kids will likely do the same thing especially with them never getting an infection. I know it's a tough thing to go through and watching your kids go through it but keep your head up! Feel free to message me if you would like.
