Kiddo Almost a Year Old -- Has Anyone Switched from Nutramigen to Milk or Soy?

Hi Mamas,

Our little guy has been on Nutramigen for the past 9 months due to acid reflux and other formula intolerance (I nursed for the first three months and he was always sick / uncomfortable, so we tried different formulas until we found Nutramigen which worked).

Has anyone switched from Nutramigen to milk or soy or coconut successfully at a year? Or is there another product I should consider?

Any help or ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks :)

Just transition slowly, start with 2oz. whole milk to 6 oz. formula. If there are issues go back to whole formula then try again in a few weeks. If still issues then the child may need to consider other options for extending the formula for 12-18 month old toddlers or another milk substitute.

If they do fine on the 2 to 6 ration then after a week go to half milk and half formula. If that goes okay then go to 6oz. milk to 2 oz. formula. If that is good you can go ahead after a couple of days then go whole milk.

This way gives the child's body the chance to tell you how they are going to adapt to milk. It may take longer than a month to transition and it may just take a couple of weeks but the slower you go the better you can tell and the better the little ones body will adapt.

We switched from Allimentum for a protein intolerance and we switched directly to soy. We did it a little over time. First two days were 1/4 soy mixed with 3/4 Allimentum, then the next two days were 1/2 and 1/2. This gave us time to see if he was really ready without it causing him too much distress. We didn't even try the milk based, because we figured the soy would be easier on his stomach. We gradually introduced milk a little at a time mixed in with the soy to see how he did.

It is always good to consult a physician if you are concerned, but this is what we did.

My grandson, now age 2, was on Nutramigen due to milk allergies, then switched to RICE milk and does fine with it. His are skin related problems, keratosis pilaris, and exzema, has improved even more since being on Reliv KIDS NOW added to the Rice Milk once or twice a day.

Hi--
Do not use soy---ALL soy is genetically modified unless it is organic. All soy has phyto-estrogens in it (chemicals that act as estrogen in the body)--not something you want to do to a little boy (or girl for that matter). Messing with their hormones at such a young age wouldn't be good for them. If you son has a dairy allergy, meaning an allergy to the milk protein, then avoid cow's milk. With my boys I mixed enriched, organic rice milk with coconut milk for the good fat. Only problem is, neither of those has any protein in it, so I also mixed in some rice protein. However, I continued to nurse well into toddlerhood, so my combination was just once in a while. I had to drastically change my diet to nurse so that was why I was able to continue nursing with such sensitive little ones.
Those are my thoughts :-)

One of my daycare babies just switched from Nutramigen to whole milk this last week. Her mom did half and half for 1 week and I forgot and handed her straight milk with the other kids on Friday. She has done fine all week and Friday.

Both my boys had to be on Enfamil Prosobee for colic. When I started them on whole milk at a year, they did just fine. When you start your little one on whole milk, just keep a close eye on him for any signs that he may have a sensitive system to cow's milk. His little body is more developed at this stage, so he may do just fine. :)

We were on Soy not Nutramigen, but we transferred slowly 2 oz at a time and thought she was handling it well. Of course now that she is 18 months I have finally figured something out.

We put her on Soy in the first place because she was very fussy and very bad reflux. She didn't really have the reflux and wasn't fussy when we started her back to milk formula and eventually milk, however at the same time we started switching her to milk based products, she started ear and sinus infections ALL the time. We had tubes put in at 13 months which helped for about 3 months, then it started all over again. about 1 1/2 months ago we decided to try eliminating dairy to see what happened. I firmly believe that she is either allergic or has a sensitivity to dairy. Every time we give her dairy she gets sinus congestion within 24 hours.

Try it slowly just an ounce or 2 at a time and see what happens. Just be aware that if he starts with sinus or ear problems think of the dairy. Wish I had known about it a lot sooner.
