I need to get my two year old son's hair cut and wanted to know if anyone had recommendations of places that do a good job at a reasonable price. It will be the first time we take him to a salon. He will be a very difficult customer...will probably scream the entire time. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi D. -

DON'T got o Snip It's in Round Rock! They have ruin my son's hair the last two times I've been. Time before last the girl hacked his hair I had to go back to get the owner to fix it! Next time she (same girl... so much for giving a 2nd chance) clipped a V in the back and they covered it up with hair product! I had to take him to the lady that cuts my husbands hair (out of her home) to fix it. Snip It's is expensive and have a poor quality of stylist... other then the owner. SO FRUSTRATING!

GOOD LUCK!

If in Austin, KAOS. We have been going to Grace for ~9 years. She is awesome with the kids and gives a great hair cut.

Hi D.,
My mom owes Tomas' Barber Shop in South Austin. The kid's first cut is always Free!! And all the barbers there give you a certificate and a bag to keep a lock of their hair for keepsaking. Call ###-###-#### and ask for Thresea. Kids haircut after the first is only $9! Don't forget your camera!!

The one time I've had my son's hair cut so far we went to Cool Cuts 4 Kids, it's in Toys R Us. It costs about $15. The have fire truck chairs and stuff like that. They also have videos for kids to watch so they can stay entertained. They are used to kids since that's all they do there so if you son does scream he shouldn't bother the other people since they will also be there with kids and should understand. My son did great though. And they did a good job on his hair. It was his first hair cut so they took his picture and gave us a thing for the hair and that was all included in the $15.

Not sure where you are located but in Round Rock there is a place called Kidz Kuts, spelling could be wrong. It on the corner of Mays and Gattis School and they are AWESOME. They cater to children. They have a kid's movie playing pretty much at all times and the child has a choice of the chairs which are a car, a horse and a motorcycle, maybe one other. I have been taking my son their since his first haircut and he is now 6 1/2 and he loves it. They are very patient and work well with the child. And they are only $12. I highly recommend them.

my son is 14 months and just got his first hair cut. I was impressed with cool cuts. The kids get to sit in a car and watch a movie while getting their hair cut. Also they take a polaroid snap shot at the end and give you a keep sake lock of hair in a plastic bag.

Look in your phonebook for a children's salon. They usually have seats fashioned to look like cars or firetrucks and tv/dvd's at each station with cartoons or movies. We went to Kids Cuts (I think that's the name?) in Westlake. However there are probably more that a few of these type of places around. However, I must say the BEST thing I brought with us (besides a blanket and stuffed animal in case she thought it was scary) was the goodie bag of fruit roll-ups, graham crackers, cookies, juice, etc. I even gave an extra roll-up to the mother next to me when her son started crying and standing up in the seat... he settled right back down when he realized there were yummies available... And for the the first few haircuts, keep the style quick and simple. Nothing with too much trimming and layers.

I have always used Cooll Cuts 4 Kids......you are able to pick a movie for your little one to watch while they get their hair cut....they also get to sit in a car or an airplane which tends to distract them. The lady's are usually very tolerable to crying as well, considering all they do is kids. I have always been pleased with the results. Unfortunately they are alittle bit more expensive than a normal pro-cuts or salon. I think it is 16.99 for a hair cut but to me is is worth the extra bucks so that he is half-way disracted from the haircut. They also will take his picture and keep some of his hair and have a cute little card to put it in for his first hair cut, just make sure you tell them it is his first time. You can find locations online.

Hi, D.. Call D. Vicars at ###-###-####. Call anytime to leave a message or Wednesday through Saturday when she is in the salon. D. was trained as a barber, she cuts my hair and my husband's. I have seen children in her shop and have seen photos of other little ones getting their first hair cut by her. She is very patient and very knowledgeable. Feel free to tell her I gave you her number. One thing I believe you will like is that she has her own separate room; like a salon within a salon. I believe she is very reasonable. Hint: You may want to take your camera. First haircuts are always memorable. B. K.

About me: I have three grown children, seven grandchildren, one great-child and twin great grands on the way. My husband and I married in 1952 and are still glad we did!

KAOS (Kids Are Our Specialty) on Anderson Mill Road (just east of 183) is where I take my 5 kids, and they do a fabulous job, although I wouldn't say it's cheap ($15). However, they are great with squirmy children who may not feel like cooperating... Their number is ###-###-####. http://www.kaos-kids.com/

KAOS is definitely the way to go! We have been going to see Grace regularly since my son was 3yrs old and he'll be 14 next week! She also cuts our 8 yr old daughter's hair. Our kids love her, as do we. Grace is wonderful and patient with the kids and does a great job at trying to put your little ones at ease.

Crew Cuts and Pigtails is a great place, they have fire engine and airplane seats and have videos playing (Backyardigans, Elmo). They had animal crackers for our 18 month old and were extremely nice and patient. They also have a train table and playroom for the kids if you have to wait, but I think they also take appointments. We had went to Cool Cuts which was not a great experience, the staff was rushed and chaotic.

We also used Cool Cuts 4 Kids for our son's first haircut. There's another one located near Lakeline Mall next to Kid to Kid (which is a fabulous children's resale shop, by the way). It's a stand alone salon if you don't actually want to take your child inside a toy store. We thought our son might cry or get upset as well, but he didn't. He was sitting in a seat built like a fire truck and was watching a video most of the time. After the first haircut, we started taking him to Great Clips which is a chain similar to Supercuts, etc., and he's never had a problem. Great Clips will advertise with coupons for $5.99 in most HOA neighborhood newsletters where they have a shop nearby as well. Good luck!

Cool Cuts for Kids is great! They are $18 but worth it for the "difficult" customer. We only had to go two or three times before my son got the hang of the haircut and now we just go to Supercuts. It definitely makes it easier to have a fun place to go at first. Good luck!

I think the children's places are good but usually expensive. My son had a lot of hair when he was born so we have been going since he was 4 months on a monthly basis. I actually like the Great Clips on Far West - they don't have all the frills but their stylists are kid-friendly and have always done a great job for $10.
