Keurig Coffee Maker-Is It Worth It?

I've been using a Keurig Coffee Maker in our hotel room, and I must say, I love the convenience of it!! My friends all rave about their Keurigs too. I've read a lot of reviews online about them all of a sudden stop working and was wondering if anyone had any problems with this? Also, which one would you recommend? The K cups seem a little expensive. So, is it really worth it?

What can I do next?

If you like the idea of making a single cup at a time, you might look at the Nespresso. We have both. The Nespresso pods are about half the cost of the K-Cups and make a great cup of coffee. (The pods have to be ordered online, but the delivery is really fast, like 1-2 days.)

I think the K-Cups make for an awfully expensive cup of coffee. But if you only drink one cup, why make a whole pot? I don't drink coffee, but my mom has one and loves it. Like the others mentioned, I bought her the reusable cup so she can fill it with whatever coffee she likes.

We have one but don't use it very often. I actually like to put it out if I have a friend over but other than that, I just use my regular coffee maker. The Keurig to me is expensive, it's at least $.50/cup compared to pennies a cup if you make it in the coffee maker. Even if you don't drink the whole pot, it's still cheaper to use the coffee maker.

My brother loves his Keurig and claims it saves him a lot, but that's because he would go out and buy coffee from the coffee shop everyday. So it depends on your idea of saving.

Also, you can buy a reusable k-cup that you just put your own coffee in. We have one and it works well. As far as them suddenly not working, you have to maintain them by running white vinegar through them otherwise they can become clogged.

My experience is this:
Our first one lasted 2 months and stopped working. I returned it to Kohls and got another one (the B40 Elite, or something like that). So far so good.
My only issue is the cost. I thought it would be cheaper in the long run because my husband would always brew a whole pot, and we would throw it away. This way we would only brew what is needed. But the K-cups are so expensive, that I think we might be spending more now. It's good coffee though!

i got him one for christmas. we use it more than 4 times daily. i use it for tea and he uses it for coffee. we brought the 15 dollar attachment to put your own coffee in it to avoid buying k cups...but compared to going to the store for coffee if you buy the kcups in bulk they are still cheaper

We love our Keurig!! We can make coffee and tea, both iced and hot. The kids can get hot water for hot cereal in the morning. You can make hot cocoa.
You can get a "My K-cup" which is a reusable cup that you can put your own ground up coffee in to brew. This can help keep the cost down and is good for the environment. You can use your own tea bags in the cup and just put hot water in the cup and steep as normal.
I find that you can run through the same K-cup a couple times and still get a good cup of coffee from it. I have some cups that hold 22 oz so I run the same K-cup with a 12 oz and then a 10 oz and it's still very tasty.
My husband and I like different flavors of coffee so we really like that we can each make what we like. I also drink decaf after my first cup of caffeinated coffee which is super easy to do with the Keurig.
You can get good prices on K-Cups on Amazon. Costco carries big boxes of them at great prices but they only carry a couple flavors which can get boring. Bed Bath and Beyond carry K-Cups and often send out 20% coupons that you can use to buy them which makes the price a little better. Target carries a great selection and often has them on sale.
Occasionally you have to run vinegar through them. There is a desalination setting. I find we have to do it a little more often than we did with a traditional coffee pot, but we use it a whole lot more so that might be a part of it. But, on the upside, the coffee never gets that stale taste you get when your coffee pot gets a little yucky and it doesn't hold on to the vinegar taste like on old fashioned coffee pot. We also like it because there is nothing hot for the kids to grab and pull down on them. I tried a carafe free coffee maker before going to the Keurig. It was beginning to taste and smell horrible, even after cleaning it and soaking it and everything. We threw it out to get the Keurig and never looked back.
We really do love it!

For all those who mention environmental impact and cost, I have to point out the obvious. There are permanent reusable cups available to fit the machines. You fill the cup with whatever coffee or tea you want and then carry on as normal. That is what my husband does. As the lone coffee drinker in the house who needs to watch how much coffee he consumes, he has been more than pleased with the Keurig I bought him. It was a Christmas gift so we havne't had it too awful long but so far so good. For what it is worth I used a 20% off coupon at Bed Bath and Beyond and was able to get the machine and the reusable cup for less than the sticker price of the machine at regular price. Good luck.

My husband LOVES his! There is a reusable 'basket' that allows you to use your own coffee. It cost about $14.

Absolutely..............We have had ours for over five years...and although it still works we have purchased another one for my husband to keep in the garage....the social center of our block. Neighbors come and can grab a cup of coffee. You can price around online and get prices. We order our K cups online. It has gotten to the point that the neighbors buy our coffee..lol............but it is worth it. The coffee is great..and so many selections. Good luck on your decision

We have one at work and at home and no problems with either of them. My husband uses the Keurig the days he works b/c he can just fill his to-go cup quickly and he's out the door. The days he is off he uses the regular coffee pot and makes/drinks the entire pot.
Those little cups are kind of spendy, but it works well for him.

We have just a basic Keurig that only makes hot drinks - we inherited it from my mom after she passed away, it's at least 4 years old, and it's still working fine, have not had anything go wrong with it. We do make sure to clean it once in a while and run stuff through it that helps with build-up and scale. My husband and I drink enough coffee that economically it makes more sense just to make a fresh pot every morning with our regular coffee maker but it's nice once in a while if you just want 1 or 2 cups, or you have company over and everyone wants something different. And sometimes in the morning I just want a cup of coffee super-fast to get me going while I actually get the coffee maker set up! I think if you drink more than 2 cups of coffee at home a day, it will end up being more expensive in the long run (here a pack of 12 K-Cups runs about $10 while a container of ground coffee that makes 240 cups is around $8) but it's still cheaper than getting a coffee at Starbucks every day. Another consideration for some folks will be the environmental impact of having to throw away all those K-Cups after they are used - there isn't any way to recycle them, as far as I know.

I have the Mr. Coffee that was $80 at Target and love it. We so far have only used the K cup, but if you buy in bulk or the store brand, they can be pretty reasonable. You can also buy a reusable filter to use regular coffee in it.

I love the Keurig but it depends on how much you actually drink. I have Keurig at the office and Tassimo at home. I like Keurig better because they have better selections of coffees and teas and the coffe is less expensive than Tassimo. We've had the Keurig at the office a long time - it has some issues but it's still working. We were wasting money making a full pot of coffee everyday and it's nice when people come to visit to make one cup at a time of whatever they want. The Tassimo is similar but the coffee is more expensive. My husband still makes himself a small pot of regular coffee during the week and we use the Tassimo on the weekends. If you only drink one cup a day or have friends over - it's nice to have the Keurig option. Hope this helps.

The money might be worth it and they are fun, but please consider the environmental impact. To create that much trash for each cup of coffee is really not worth the fun.

Three years old and never a problem. Love, love love it. Only use e K cups when I am in a great hurry. So twenty can last four months. I bought the cafe cups. You can get them at Bed bath and Beyond or A,Avon. Kuerig sells their own. You use your regular coffee with these. When I was given the Keurig maker I was like eh ok. After two days fell in love with it.

It is worth it if you only drink one or two cups of coffee a day, and you are into specialty coffees. If you normally go through a pot of coffee a day then it would be really expensive.

I love mine for the convenience of making a single cup at a time and love it for guests! My kids enjoy a little hot cocoa and it makes it simple and easy. We use it daily....the k-cups can be expensive but the machine comes with a self filler cup that allows you to use your own grounds. I purchased mine from Costco so that if it does break I am able to return it for a new one.

I enjoy the one I have. I love being able to go in the kitchen and twirl around the little stand and pick the flavor of the moment. I have a single cup one that my FIL gave me when he upgraded to the one that has a water reservoir on the side. I don't like his because the water sits a while and it tastes old to me. I don't want a hot drink every day so the single cup one is perfect for me. I use a small styrofoam cup to measure the water and my coffee/hot cocoa cup is exactly 2 of those cups of water. So if I want hot cocoa I know to fix 2 containers of mix and water. Then just leave the cup under it for the 1st and 2nd mix to drain in.

My MIL has had two or three and they've all had something go wrong with them at the one-year point. She purchased hers at Costco, so she just takes them back for a new (free) one each time they break.

Knowing that, we purchased the Bosch Tassimo 40 and love it. It has a smaller footprint than the Keurig, too. This model makes coffee, latte, espresso, tea and hot chocolate. I'm not sure if the newer Keurig does that or not. There's a little less of a coffee selection than Keurig, but what they have, I love.

Not sure what it is, but we used much more coffee in our regular maker to make stronger coffee, so we were already paying a lot for coffee to begin with (and it was quality coffee, too). I buy the coffee discs at Bed, Bath & Beyond and use their 20% off coupons.

We love ours, personally. The only thing that I grapple with is the coffee discs aren't recyclable. That bums me out as I do try to be as eco-friendly as I can.

Right behind the fridge, washer and microwave, our Keurig is my favorite appliance. We are on our third, because the first two had problems after about a year. However, they have the absolute best customer service I've ever found. A human being answers almost immediately, and after walking me through some troubleshooting, when it didn't fix the problem, they shipped us a new machine, even though it was past the warranty date in one case. Haven't had any trouble with this third brewer in over a year.

Re the K-cups--they are expensive, but we get them at Costco or with coupons at Bed Bath and Beyond, which helps. Mostly we use the little filter thing, where you just brew your own ground coffee. This probably saves $$ because you're not dumping half a pot of old coffee all the time. And it's infinitely cheaper than Starbucks!

Love the product and the company!
