Keeping Him Dry Thru the Night

my 16 month old pees through his pajamas every night! I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas about how to prevent this- i feel so bad for him every morning when i change him and he's soaked up to his armpits. i've tried cutting back on fluids before bed, layering with two diapers, but nothing seems to work.

What can I do next?

thanks for all the ideas everyone. I started putting my son in huggies natural fit and added a liner in the diaper as well, and since then there haven't been any leaks! hooray!

Try Huggies Overnite Diapers. They work great, I have tried everything on my two kids. I use them on my two year old and on my 4 year old I use Goodnite Pullups plus rubber underpants from Target as an outer extra layer.

is he wearing a night-time diaper? There are some really good ones on the market that you might want to try. My daughter was doing this until we switched her. Now we try to not give her anything to drink for 30-60 minutes before bedtime and she wears GoodNights diapers. When she was younger she wore Huggies Overnights and they worked really well.

Good luck!

We tried all the diaper tricks and cutting back on fluids before bed, but none of those things worked for us consistently. What did finally work was folding the top of the diaper under in the front (to form a little pocket of sorts) and then placing rubber pants over the diaper. When I remove the rubber pants in the AM there is almost always liquid in there, but my son is pretty much dry. Good luck!

I had the same problem every single morning with my little girl and then I found the best thing ever invented. They are called Diaper Doublers. I insert two to three in my daughters diaper at night and as of yet (3 months) she has not had a single leak. The only place that I have found them so far is at some Safeway's and at Babies R' Us. They run about $3.00 for a 30 pack. Good luck

My daughter had the same problem. Not only do I use diaper doublers (I found them at Safeway and Babies-R-Us) but I went up a size in diapers at night. I also make sure she is warm at night by putting warm socks on her under her blanket sleeper and keeping the room warm enough. In the morning, her diaper must weigh 5 pounds but her PJs are dry and she sleeps 11-12 hours at night. I also put a thick layer of Desitin on her before bedtime to protect her bottom. Hope that helps.

Try putting him in the next size diaper. Many times, when the baby is getting closer to the maximum weight for their size diaper, they will start to leak out. Going to the next size up really helps, especially at night. It will be able to hold more. Also, the fluids (whether it's milk or water) needs to be stopped an hour before bedtime or sooner, which is preferable.

Also, another thing to try is a different style diaper for nighttime. I used Huggies Ultra-Trim during the day but used Huggies Supreme for bedtime. But first, definitely try getting the next size up for bedtime.

Good luck!

Hi B.,
What worked for us was to use one size up in diapers during the night every night. That extra amount of diaper just helped to absorbe excess at night... Just an idea!

Not too much you can do except... 1. No liquid one or two hours before bed. 2. Wake him up just before you go to bed and have him go pee then. From your letter, I can't tell if he's potty trained during the day, but at night time, sometimes kids just need to "grow out of it". My eight year old still wears Good-Nights to bed and sometimes pees through those. At least he's old enough to take the sheets off his own bed.

Dear B.,

I have a 17 1/2 month old and I was having this same problem. We use Pampers and my nanny recommended that I switch to Huggies so we did that for a while and that seemed to work but then it occurred to me that what was happening was that my son had grown out of Pampers #3 and needed to be in Pampers #4 because of his weight and that is why he was leaking all the time. My son also moves around a lot in his sleep and that also tends to be a problem. I would also recommend that you make sure that you make sure that when you put on his diaper at night that you make sure that his little penus is pointing down. So I would start off by making sure that your son is wearing the right size diaper. Then if that is not working, I would try a different brand of diapers. Good luck!

Hi B.,

I have the same problem with my son. I stop all liquids at least 2 hours before bed, and change him once he's ready to actually go to sleep (after our night-time routine). I've also changed him right before I go to sleep (luckily he's a heavy sleeper and it doesn't seem to bother him), and that helps him make it to morning without leaking. I did see that they have night-time diapers in the store, but I have not tried them. Hope this helps!

To keep my daughter dry, I would line her diaper with a "liner" that I think they call diaper liners or inserts, which were available at Safeways supermarket and were super-absorbent. You could also try a regular maxi-pad, too, but they may not be as gentle on baby skin. I also used plastic pants, avaialble at Babies r Us. In fact, my daughter is 2.5yo, and we still use the plastic pants at night, so they go up to size 2T to 3T. Good luck!!

You might just have to wake up and change him in the middle of the night. I had to do that for a while with my youngest. What worked for me was just keeping the light dim(yes, I did turn on a light)and DON'T talk to him. Just change him and then lie him back down or what ever you do to get him to sleep, I would nurse mine. My little guy would go right back to sleep 99% of the time.
Hang in there!

We have had pretty good luck with the Huggies Overnight diapers available at Babies R US, and I have also heard good things (but not tried myself) about the "diaper doublers". They look kind of like a maxi pad and go in the bottom of the diaper.

I have the same problem with my daughter after she started whole milk. I don't have any good solution to it. Right now night time I have been using Huggies Overnite diaper which is thicker and absorbs better and it seems help a little. A friend of mine just switch her son's diaper to a bigger size and it did the trick. By the way the only place you can get Huggies Overnite diaper is either Raley's or Bel Air. Good luck.

A little about me:

My daughter is 14 month old. It has been a great adventure growing with her. I've been married to the same guy for 18 years. She is our first and maybe the only child. I cherish every single moment that I have with her.

If you haven't already done so try those zip up pj's with the feet. If he is anything like my 16 month old he tugs at his diaper a lot more if he is wearing pants without a onesie type shirt. You probably need to increase his diaper size; try size 5 or 6 pampers cruisers. They are the most leak proof diapers that I can find. Good luck-A.

Hi there!

I know you've had alot of responses, and just wanted to give my input. My son is 26 months old, and he drinks alot as well, and we've never limited him to what times he stops drinking..... yet he's only soaked himself maybe twice in his life at night. I really think the brand has a lot to do with it. We've used Huggies on him practically since the beginning. We did try Pampers when he was a newborn, and in one day he soaked 3 outfits, so we never used them again. (Although my friend who has a girl has never had a problem with them). My other friend who has a boy also agrees with me. Sometimes the type of Huggies diaper matters too. He's used Ultra trim (which have lion king on them I think) The Pooh ones have also worked well,(my MIL buys them, so they've changed!) however he seems to make the Mickey Mouse diapers more full, so we've stuck with either Pooh or Lion King! Good Luck!

Hi,
we had the same problem with our little girl, and here's what works. We use a huggies "night time diaper" with a diaper liner insert. The inserts look like long maxi pads. I've found them at most BabiesRus stores and at some safeway stores.
Good Luck,

You can find night time diapers at the supermarket - this is what I use for my just two year old who was consistantly peeing through her regular diapers every single night. The aren't any bigger or bulkier than normal diapers, they just have more absorbency crystals in them - I think huggies or pampers makes them - they are in a purple package. They aren't real expensive at all, and all you use is one night time diaper each day, so one package lasts a long time.
They really do work - my daughter still fills that diaper with pee, but it always holds just fine and leak free until morning.

I would maybe try the "good nights" night time pull-ups if they have any your son's size or go up a size in his diaper/pull- up at night. I have a school-age boy who has accidents at night, and the good nights work well for keeping him dry.

Are you using Pampers or store brand??? I bet it's the Brand of dipers. Try Huggies are a different brand. They also make little plastic underwear that are used to go over cloth diapers...I think Walmart carries them.
Best of luck, oh yeah...make sure the little ruffles are not tucked inside the diaper and that the diaper is pulled up and tucked closely around the legs and the back straps cover the front sides....(if that makes any sense) I've always bought one size bigger rather than going by weight on the package.
let me know if it helps.

Hi B., I have the same dilemma with my 17 mo old boy. I use Huggie Overniters, lots of Desitin and try to make sure he has a dry diaper right before he goes to sleep, and I've been told by his sitter to make sure his diaper is tight enough. The accidents still happen occassionaly, but I still give him as much milk as he wants before bed, because he seems to sleep better. Just means I have to be on top of clean up first thing in the am.... Good luck - I keep telling myself, this is just one of those phases they go thru~

I am a mom of 4 children. First, don't feel bad when you're changing him. Second, talk to his pediatrician. Maybe something is going on at night in his body. Cut back on his water intake during the day also. Don't dehydrate him, but it doesn't sound normal that he would be doing that every night. I have 3 boys, and they all did it occasionally, but not every night. I'd start with the dr.
Good luck.

When my daughter was small I used to take an inexpensive diaper, remove the plastic from it and fold it up so it fit the area of her vagina. This was the only way she remained dry through the night. I hope it works for you both. It kind of worked like a sanitary pad but was more absorbent. Perhaps one of the adult urinary control pads would work as well or better?
So glad you have such a wonderful family.

I have that same problem with my son, so I double diaper him. I found it's the way you put the diapers on that help keep them from leaking. The first diaper you put on, you fold it down so it's like a bikini. the second diaper should totally cover the first one and go over it completely. When I fasten the tabs of the second diaper, I make sure they go over where the first diaper is. That way it won't roll down. So if the diaper underneath leaks, the second diaper will catch the fluids. It works about 95% of the time. but occasionally a leak will happen. Good luck!

For heaven's sake - he's only 16 months old and this will probably go on for a while. Make sure he goes to the bathroom before he goes to bed. Until they are able to control themselves more, it is difficult to stop the night time wetting. My son, who is now 31 wet the bed until he was almost five, and my granddaughter who is 5 uses pull-ups at night. Good luck.

I've found that a lot of times when the diaper no longer holds enough it's time to go up a size. Also, "bargain diapers" usually aren't. Both Pampers (Cruisers) and Huggies (Sumpreme) are a little more expensive than their standard diapers, but they work better (more absorbant, and better fitting). Good luck!

Are you using cloth or disposable? The disposable "Overnight" diapers work well. Make sure you're getting the right size for his weight, and move him up a size after he hits the bottom of the weight range for the size up but before he hits the top of the range for the size he's in. Be sure the sides of the diaper are pulled back tightly and that the back comes around and attaches far forward to prevent gaps. Also, be sure he's pointing down! My mom forgot that step once and my son peed straight up and out of his overnight diaper. Hope this helps!

Good luck!

We made sure that our son drank a lot during the day, but almost nothing after 6pm, except for some nursing. We used disposables during the night that were specifically for the nighttime. It was a long time ago now, but I seem to recall buying either disposable or real diaper pads to put inside the diaper to add an extra layer. I also read that some children do not have that specific hormone working in their bodies yet that decreases the production of urine while they are sleeping. It is the same hormone that is deficient in older so-called “bed wetters.” For awhile I feared that my son had it, because I did until I was ten!

My son is 8.5 years old now, and we still have to make sure he does not drink a lot before bedtime. But the hard part about it is way in the past now. Enjoy your little one, they grow up fast!
