Keeping Bibs on My 10 Month Old

Hi everyone,
I've come across a problem that started maybe about 2 weeks ago. My dd hates wearing a bib. After about 5 minutes into feeding, she'll grab the bib and start pulling until it comes off or else she won't finish eating. We use the Gerber bibs that has a pretty strong velcro that sometimes does the job. I've actually been feeding her w/o her bib lately since it's such a hassle. How do you keep bibs on your little ones?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone!
My husband did suggest just taking her shirt off and feeding her that way. I ordered a bumkin sleeved bib, it looks pretty interesting and hope it works. I'll also give those towel bibs that go over the head a try. Thanks for all the ideas, I'll probably give them a try eventually.

I had to get the ones that pull over the head for just that reason. Once my son realized it was a losing battle he lost interest in trying to get it off. That is all I've got. Good luck.

My oldest wore bibs until he was at least 2 (we used the throw away ones at that point). My youngest stopped using them probably around 8 or 9 mos. For me it was - does he eat and have dirty clothes or does he have a hungry belly and clean clothes. So he had a few extra clothes in the laundry...

J. - There are a few bibs out there that have a snap button on the back that stay on MUCH better than the velcro stuff. The ones I have are really good because the front is the plasticy material that is very easy to clean and the back is a soft cloth type material to keep the bib flexible and soft to touch for the baby/toddler. The brand is dex dura bibs I think. Here's a link: http://www.greatbeginningsonline.com/store/item.asp?DEPAR...

When the weather isn't too cold - we also used to strip my daughter down to her diaper so she could make a mess and then give her a bath right away or at least just wipe her off with wet paper towels.

I found ones that slip over their head. They are like a terry cloth towel w/ a hole in it, it has a tshirt like opening. they love them. You might also find one thats waterproof.
If all else fails, buy a few cheap tshirts from walmart and use them as smock/bibs. You could even iron on a cute patch on the front to help it be a bit "waterproof".

I had the same problem. I just let him eat without a bib. I figure baby clothes are basically disposable - just have lots of shirts on hand. It wasn't a battle I felt strongly enough about winning.
Good luck!

I used safety pins. That got to be a pain after a while, but it worked. I then switched to buying the bibs that pull over their head.

check out this link to Etsy - if you've never heard of it, it's a website that hosts tons of shops all filled with handmade items- the link is for bibs with snaps rather than velcro which would be harder to pull off.

Buy a few inexpensive t-shirts. Get them a couple of sizes up. That way they'll fit over her clothes and last for a while. She'll think of them as clothes.

For my son, I try to buy bibs that go on over the head. If you can't find 'em, buy some cheap Tee shirts, or use ones he's outgrown, and cut down the sides so they're like a smock. This is particularly useful 'cause you can turn them around backwards if they get icky.

I would just feed without a shirt on. On a side note, did you read that they found lead on bibs?

My friend buys cheap shirts at consignment shops and yard sales to use as "eating shirts." It works really well with her daughter. She has been doing this for over a year now.

my daughter used to do the same thing. we temporarily switched to bibs that don't have velcro or a snap. you can buy bibs that just slip over the head at babies r us or target. it is harder for them to remove them. hope that helps.

I personally never used bibs. My daughter hated them also, but the ones from wal-mart that fold up to form a little pocket at the bottom are pretty good since they snap and not velcro. I prefer changing her into an old onesie that doesn't snap at the bottom but fits around the top. It gets messy and stains all over, but it's just a bib, so who cares! In the summer I often fed her without a shirt on outside.

I had the same problem and it lasted a great while. I purchased a kidopotumus bib ( I think that is sp right, but you could google it) I got mine at babiesrus. They are almost a rubber material and they have a rubber like hook in the back, hard to get off and the best part is they are completely a rubber type material and once you are done wash the entire thing in the sink and you are ready for next time. I wasn't sure what my daughter would think but it was a hit and it has a large lip for falling food. We never had a big issue with these getting pulled off and are perfect for less of a mess too.

At Walmart and Babies R' Us you can get bibs that don't have the velcro. It is all just one piece around the neck. Unless she can take off her shirt, she shouldn't be able to get the bib off.

We have the same issue at our house with our 1 year old son! We have switched from the velcro bibs to ones that use snaps, ties or that are one piece (like towels with a hole for the head.) They sell different variations at most stores...was just at Babies R Us yesterday in fact and saw a few of the one-piece kinds in fun colors and designs. Hope this helps!
