Just Kind of Curious

Obviously some ppl won't feel comfortable answering, but for my own curiousity to get a good "idea" of a large population of moms,

1. What is your height and weight
2. How many kids do you have and what are their ages?

Again, if you don't want to answer or think it is an offensive question please just skip it, I am not here to start a dramafest. I am just curious because most of my friends are childless and I feel like I may have unrealistic expectations of what my body should be.

ETA - Sorry forgot to share my own info... I am 5'4 and weigh 128 and have 2 kiddos, 6, 7. Most of my childless friends around the same height weigh much less than me...not sure on the numbers but in the size 1-3 range and I am a 5-7.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! No, not trying to be a humble bragger I PROMISE!! I used to weigh 113 so it is hard for me to see 128 on the scale. I am trying to let go and accept a different body but it is hard for me because I have self-image issues as far as weight goes. Also seeing all of the 105-120s of ppl my own height makes me feel like maybe I should not just accept my weight and work harder to change it. I have 3 close friends that are in my "old" range, we used to be able to share clothes and such, but now I feel like the "big" friend, even if I am not all that big.

I'm 5' 6 1/2 " and weigh around 150 at the moment. (put on some over the holidays this year...). I usually am around 140-144 though and will be again in a couple of months.

I am 42. I have 2 kids: 12 and 9 yrs old.

Wanted to add:
No matter what size/weight you are. Once you have kids, the clothes don't fit anymore. Everything shifts. I have actually weighed several pounds LESS than before I was childless, and still couldn't get into the clothes I had back then. Everything shifts. So you will probably not ever be able to share clothes with those women again, unless they have kids. :)

I am 5'8, 33 years old, weigh 188 lbs, which is pretty heavy IMO...I am most comfortable at around 165 lbs...and have resigned myself that I will never be the 137 lbs that I was at 17!

I have 3 kids ages 7, 5 & 3.

~I need to loose weight, I know this but am not beating myself up about it at this time...I think I carry my weight pretty good...I recently broke my elbow and had to have surgery and all kinds of medicine and every one that asked my weight made a comment on how I didn't look like I weigh almost 200 lbs...so that made me feel better!

I used to be the one that didn't have kids because we waited a long time and I was the skinny fit one with the expensive car and great job and dh and I traveled and ate out and did whatever we pleased. But we traded all that in for life in suburbia (which we're still figuring out) and I am SAHM and now mostly have other mama friends-thank God cause you need them to get through and we're all in the same boats, trying to lose weight, making decisions for our kids on everything from food to school to health, rarely going out unless it's to the zoo, and finding that the rat race has gone on just fine without us.

I'd have to say age, physical activity, health and genes play a MUCH bigger role in weight after having kids- not JUST the fact that you had kids.

I know moms of all sizes. From very big to teeny tiny... Some just can't help it cause of their genes, some have slowed down taking care of their own selves and have gotten unhealthy as a result, some are older and don't have the metabolism that they used to have, some moms have increased their activity in hopes of keeping up with their kids, some moms don't have to work hard at it at all and stay thin, etc...

Things that ARE caused by kids for some mommies: stretch marks, loose and baggy bellies, and not as perky boobies...

OK, let me start by saying that I'm well aware that I'm over-weight. I know it, my doctor knows it, anyone who looks at me knows it. I'm not colossal, just considerably bigger than I technically should be. I've gone up & down the same 30 pounds several times over the years & in truth, I really should lose a total of 50-60 pounds. I'm sure to the majority of the moms on here, that's a horrifying thought. Trust me, I'm horrified, too. That being said, I'm finding it hard to believe that our nation as a whole is overweight & the average size worn by women is a 16, but everyone online seems to claim to be a max of 125lbs. This just doesn't add up to me. Am I missing something...? I'm 34 years old, and like I said, I'm aware I need to lose weight, but every woman I know who is grown with children and of an average height, by which I mean between say, 5'3-5'8, I do not know a single one who weighs less than 130. Just saying.

When I'm not pregnant, I am working out 6 days a week. I don't buy into the myth that just because you have had a child (or children) that you should let your body go. Anyone can get into shape with determination and a drive to make it happen.

I will answer your question, but first I want to encourage you that the scale is NOT the most accurate indicator of where you stand in fitness and health. It is much more about your Body Mass Index. If you are in the gym regularly and have good musculature from resistance training, you are more likely to weigh more than you would if you didn't have great muscle tone. Eating right and exercising regularly will put you in your optimum shape. So forget that scale. How do you FEEL?

p.s. I'm 33, weight 130, have 4 year old twins, can't wear my pre-preggo jeans, but feel GREAT! I'm strong and healthy and can still carry both by monsters around.

Let's see, I have two children (8 and 6), I am 5'6" and I think I weigh 145-150 lbs. I'm not sure, because I don't have a scale. I think I'd drive myself crazy if I had one and decided to weigh myself every day. For me, it's more about how I feel and whether I'm healthy or not, rather than how much I weigh. And I definitely need to start working out again, because I feel terrible! I'm always tired, and the other day I hurt my shoulder after playing the bowling game on Wii sports. Very sad. But I'm lazy and don't work out, so I need to start--not because of how much I weigh, but because of how tired I feel all the time.

Definitely don't compare yourself to other people. Every woman is different; some women struggle with their weight, and others have never had to worry about it. Be more concerned about taking care of yourself and making sure you exercise and eat healthy--and enjoy being with your children! :-)

Our body types can vary so much that comparing is usually misguided, but you sound fine.

I am 5'0 or 5'1" and weight 145 pounds. Before I had kids, I was 135. BEFORE my husband, 115. : )

I have a friend who is 5'9" who weighs less than me (even when I was thin). She is not BONY. We just have...very different builds. And though she is MUCH more atheltic than I am, I have a LOT more natural muscle mass.

125 is about right for me. I suggest you get yourself weighed with a Tanita. It will tell you your % body fat. I was always BONY at 115...and now I know why...100 pounds of me is bones & blood! : )

I'm 40 years old, working on 41 this year. I have 3 kids 10,7 & 21 months (plus one miscarriage between 2&3). I am right about 5'9" and I fluctuate between 154-159 right now. I am built big. Even when "skinny" in high school I was a 36C (Breastfeeding I'm currently a 36E so I know that's where some of my weight is LOL), with broad hips, long arms and long legs. I've got a good deal of muscle as well. The lowest weight I have been comfortable at was 145 after my second. I was that before my miscarriage. 5 pounds hung around as a reminder of that. I was 150 when I got pregnant with #3. I am trying to get to the 150 but I realized I've got a good deal more muscle mass now than I did and muscle weights more than fat.
I said this to another post like this earlier today. A number isn't the entire picture. Muscle weights more than fat. Your weight changes depending on your monthly cycle, what you've eaten and when, what you're wearing, if you've recently gone to the bathroom. I can get my weight to change in upwards of 5 pounds by doing nothing more than kick my scale around the floor a few inches this way and that. Step on, weight, step off, nudge it, step on, weight...totally different number..5 times in a row..5 different numbers. I go by the fit of clothes and not the number on my scale. I'm typically a size 10 pants and a L or XL shirt to fit the breasts and broad shoulders.

Before I got pregnant this time I was 5'5" and 128 lbs... one 2 year old girl. pre-pregnancy BEFORE I had her I was 144 lbs (after dieting down from 165). During THAT pregnancy I got back up to 163, and left the hospital weighing 144 (what a lucky girl I was!) Right now I weigh 148lbs at 28 weeks pregnant, with my second baby. I am 23.

Before I got pregnant this time, all my husband's friends would snicker at him and say I was his "trophy wife" LOL! (boost to my ego, eh?)

I used to be skinnier, I used to be bigger- health is more than a number though! (keep that in mind)

It takes a LOT of muscle to chase around a couple of kids! That muscle weighs more than fat does... volume wise. Do your childless friends chase after little kids all day?

Also- even if you weighed 100 lbs, you might not wear a 1-3 size. Having kids makes your body change, and I don't think it ever returns exactly the same. Your hips may be wider, your breasts larger (or smaller) and even your rib cage could stay "spread out". You cannot make your bones any smaller!

By the way... sizes aren't always the same. If you buy things out of the "juniors section" you could be a 7, or even an 11. You could go to a "women's store" and be a size 2! You can also have small tops and large bottoms, or visa versa! What makes you healthy and beautiful is being happy with who you are, and if you can't, making smart choices to get to that place where you see a beautiful 'you' in the mirror!

-M.

By the way... I think we naturally weigh more as we age... every woman I know has gained at least a few pounds from the time their kids are born and they lose (or don't) that weight, till when their kids graduate, and when the go through menopause etc. A lot of them are overweight, but many are not. The statistics might not match this site because we are mostly moms who are "younger" (it seems to me). Not "all women". Also, people who aren't happy with their weight... could be more reluctant to post it for the world to see. No judgement there- but I think it is something to keep in mind!

I am 5' 3" and around 122 lbs. 11 year old, 6 year old, and 2 year old. I hate my weight.

Before I was pregnant I was 85 lbs and a size double zero. I hated that also. I was a ballerina, but tooooo skinny. I could not put weight on.

I have set my goals to start working out again. I would like to be around 100 lbs. That would be MY ideal weight I think. I think that would put me at a zero or 1. Right now I am a size 3, and my belly is not tone. I have too much extra on my thighs also. I would love to look good in a bikini! That is my goal for this summer! :)

Just adding in response to Melissa J- I really AM staying around 122 regularly these days, and, I really AM NOT happy about it. I've been fit all of my life, and, I teach dance. But, teaching dance does not KEEP me tone like I need to be. I don't see how so many people can happily be comfortable in their skin when they are not fit. I find myself feeling sluggish when I don't eat healthy. So, we eat healthy. I find myself not liking my belly when it is not tone. So, I have started squeezing in about 20 minutes for myself before I go to bed to do my own little work-out. Nothing compared to what it used to be. And hey, I'm all for being comfortable in your skin, but, I'm more for being healthy and fit. We say our kids give us these curves, well, I want to be here for my grand-kids so I'm going to eat healthy and work out as much as I can so I can be here for a very long time to watch them get married and maybe see my great-grand-kids!

Also adding in response to a few others, just because you may be "healthy" now, (meaning no heart problems, cholesterol problems, diabetes, etc.) and overweight, doesn't mean you will be healthy in 5 years or 10 years. Everyone needs to start taking care of themselves now to prevent problems in the future! It starts now! Sure, I know skinny people that are unhealthy. But, they don't eat good either. It will eventually catch up to most people. There are always a few exceptions, but, those a few and far between.

I am 5'4" as well, weigh 135, and wear a size 7 .
I have 2 kids , 13 and 3.
I sort of watch what I eat and do moderate exercise (walking 3 miles a couple times a week, home dance videos occasionally, and hiking with my dog 1-2 times a wk). My downfall is my nightly 2 glasses of wine & I'm in NO WAY ready to give it up, though I'm sure that if I did, I would be about your size.

Your just longing for the childless body you had before, that's all....totally normal to feel that way. In fact, even if you were pre-pregnancy weight, it wouldn't LOOK the same as it did then - and that's just life, girl. Your body created & grew another human being and that is AWESOME ! :-)

As long as you feel good, your clothes fit comfortably & nicely, and your partner (if you have one) still finds you attractive, then it's ALL good ! :-)

5'0 / 130-135lbs I wear a size 8/10 (short) And I have 2 kids. Ages 7 & 2.

My kidless friends are heavier than me. Some VERY much heavier than me.

5'4" and 128... You're just fine. And a 5/7... That's what I wore long BEFORE I had kids.

Edit to add- If you think you're heavy, I guess you're calling anyone in the size 8+ a monster.

For those that are proud to look anorexic... Nevermind...

5'0" (or 4'12" as I sometimes say haha) and currently about 102lbs. I have a 5 year old. I was about 95lbs before she was born, and size 1 or 2. After she was born I weighed more around 105-110lbs and my hips had changed so there went size 1 & 2!! lol I'm more of a size 5 or 7 now. I still have that tummy "pouch". I can't seem to stick to any sort of exercise to make a difference! That's the only thing I want to get rid of!!!

I lost weight recently due to a medication I was taking and have since changed & doing better. Wish that had taken away my pouch...haha

sounds like you are doing great - just remember your body is never going to be like it was before you had kids - quit comparing yourself to your friends that have no kids......it is unrealistic!

I'm 19 with a 20 month old baby, Im 5'4 and weigh 113 and size 3/4, before my pregnacy i weighed 110 and was a size 1. I have always been a thin girl though and am even a few pounds below ideal weight. so my recommendation is dont dwell on the number of pounds but instead on condition(dont know if you exercises regularly not) toning up makes a huge difference on the apperance of your body, so id worry more on muscle tone and exercise than the actuall number of pounds. for your height i'd say a size 5 is perfect! :)

I am 5'2" and weight 130. I have 4 kids (12, 9, 5, and 2)

I was always able to get to my prepregnancy rate with each kid, except for this last one. Maybe it was the 60 pound pregnancy weight gain (although I did nothing different with this one) or my age.....but I cannot lose weight unless I am so super strict.

I am at my pre-pregnancy weight for about 2 yrs now, I also wear a 5-7...I think your body sounds about right. The only compaint I have is I could tone up a little, Im thin but I don't have much muscle tone.

Hope that helps :)

5'2 ish and prior to this pregnancy 130ish. 1 kid and he is 4.5. My ideal weight and goal weight after I push out this kid is 120, which is still much higher than my child free weight of 102 - but I was in my 20s and well... let's face it, life is different now and those 65 pounds I gained during my last pregnancy sure wanted to stick around. :)
