Joint Pain

I have an almost 1 year old who is still nursing. I am currently weaning, and have noticed that my joints are really starting to hurt--almost like someone is stabbing me at times. I remember this feeling starting when I was toward the end of my pregnancy, but it seems like it is getting much worse. Has anyone else experienced this? I couldn't get on my hands and knees until my son was almost 7 months old because the pain would start up.

What can I do next?

G., all the advice about nutrition etc I support 100% that said, due to my own experience which began with joint pain, redness, fatigue, etc, I found that after a couple of doctors, one ran the right tests and found an answer. Nobody wants to have a disease, (I have lupus...for now...believing for healing!) it's just important to start with the truth so you can make the very best choices based on whats really going on. Hopefully blood tests come back 100% good! In all honesty, they most likely will. It's just so good to know if you do have an enemy, so you can nail it and be as healthy and happy as possible! Best to you..don't be scared, it'll be okay.

Hi G.,
I had joint pain as well. My Dr. recommended that I take something called OPC-3. It was really helpful and the pain went away quickly. The cheapest place to get it is online. www.sullivanhealthandhome.com.
Hopefully you will find what works for you.
Feel Better!

Hi G.

I would highly recommend glucosamine - My husband and I have taken it consistently for almost two years -

After 30 - The joints just do not operate like they used to. Do you know Gabrielle Reece?

Super-model, super-mom and volleyball pro? She is endorsing a brand new line called simply nutrilite. One of the products is a twist tube - Rasberry flavor that you add to your H20 (1500mg glucosamine)

Look for the ads in Health, Real Simple, O magazine...

You can also check out my website, I rep the product on-line (look under health)
www.ishikawagroup.mychoices.biz

I would be happy to mail or drop off a sample as well. We are in Hawaii Kai :)

Hope that helps!

Have a beautiful day
D.

P.S. I am 34 years old and have 4 children
8,6,almost 4 and almost 1.

If you are having joint pain, you might check into iron overload. That causes joint pain. If you haven't had a period in over a year, you might have some iron loading going on. Your period naturally gets rid of excess iron in women and sometimes when a person hasn't had a period in a long time, she might have excess iron. It settles in the joints first and causes joint pain. That is the short version of it. LOL It is just one idea to explore.

Hi G.,
You may have developed a deficiency during your pregnancy. I shop factory direct with a natural US pharmaceutical company. If you're interested I'd be happy to talk to you about it. They have products like daily vitamin/mineral supplements and a joint supplement. I felt the difference in days. They sure work and are reasonably priced, delivered right to your door. I use them and have also switched to natural green cleaning and personal products. You shop factory direct and get better deals than at your discount store.

I had similar pain with my first one, and I believe that it was breastfeeding hormones related. It got better after he was about 16 months.

I had horrible joint pain in my knees when I was nursing my first child. I went through very extensive testing for nutrient difficiencies, arthritis, etc. Everything came up negative. Shortly after I quit nursing the pain went away. I am now nursing my second child and have joint pain in my toes, making it difficult to walk at times. I just deal with it because I believe it too will go away after I am done nursing. To me the temporary pain is worth the benefits for my babies! Congratulations to you for nursing for a year; I feel like we are a rare breed!

Most of joint pain is cause by not enough Calcium and minerals. Take a really good Calcium and mineral supplement.

I use GBG's 10-in-One Liquid Vitamins and I don't even hurt from arthritis any more. I used to have horrible joint pain, especially in my hips, but I don't any more.

Hi G.. I had my 3rd child in September (she's 5 months old now), I'm 37, and I've been having pain in my wrists and toes over the entire past year or so (began while I was pregnant and has worsened after baby's birth). I've been trying to research online and am afraid the answer my be some type of early arthritis? I realize this doesn't help much, but at least you know you're not alone!
I practice yoga regularly to try and keep flexible, eat a good diet, etc. Maybe it would be worse if I weren't doing these things, but the pain (particularly in my wrists) rarely goes away.

I'll be watching your responses to see if anyone else has some good advice for you.

Take care,
M.

I'm so sorry that you are feeling that pain. Do you have history of Rhumetoid Arthritus (sp?) in your family? Have you been taking calcium supplements? I feel for you-maybe you should see your doctor or a specialist. Sounds bad. Hang in there! You are a great mommy for nursing that long!

Hi G. -
Yes, I had bad pain in my joints for a long time and couldn't bend over very well. Even after 3 years, I can't sleep in one position for too long because my hips start to hurt. I suppose it's genetic because my grandmother has the same problem. Maybe MSM or Fish oil would help.

Good luck , L.

Definitely see a Dr. about RA. You are at the age when it strikes most women. I've had it my whole life but I am a rare case.It could just be hormonal but they can test for that also. You need to know what's going on so you can address the issue & get the help you need. My prayers are with you. God Bless.

Hi, G.-
Looks like you've received a lot of good advice. I'm in my 50's and nursed my children till they were 14 and 16 mos. I don't recall having the joint pain you speak of, but I also had someone advise me to keep taking my prenatal vitamins for at least a year after I delivered, and with the responses I'm reading from other people, I wonder if doing that may be why I didn't have the pain you're experiencing.

I know that my sister is a fan of OPC-3. And sounds like you have a few other avenues recommended that you can try. I also HIGHLY recommend massage therapy and chiropractic. If you want a recommendation for a great office in the Del Mar area, let me know.

Hi, G.!
It's very common for new moms to have issues with tendons & joints because of the hormonal changes before & after delivery. Before delivery, the oxytocin makes our joints more flexible & loose, so the pelvis can stretch.

I developed a really painful form of tendonitis in my left wrist a few months after my baby was born; it is called De Quervain's Syndrome, nicknamed "new mom's syndrome" b/c of the strain put on the wrists from picking the baby up. It was so excruciating; when you said "stabbing" pains, I immediately related. I went to see my chiropractor & my acupuncturist for help, so you may want to check out some alternative treatments. I have many mommy friends who had tendonitis in the months after baby was born.

Hope this helps! You're not alone! Take it easy; your body is still healing & recovering from a long process of change. :)

I recommend that you see an osteopath doctor. If you are not familiar with osteopathy, here is the link to the website that explains well.
http://www.osteohome.com/
The osteopathic doctors will work with your soft tissues as well as your muscles and nerves in very non-invasive way. I had many back problems and joint problems after my baby, and osteopathy has help me so much. My osteopath doctor is the only doctor I consider worth of every single penny I pay her. She is a fantastic healer. She does not accept insurances, but I get most of the fee reimbursed by my PPO plan. I have referred many of my friends and family members and they are all huge fans of osteopathy now.

When we are pregnant, our bodies MINERALS are drained, so its important to make sure we are getting the proper minerals into our system, that we pass onto our baby, but also, so they are NOT sucked out and depleted...While prgnant, I was using a product called Extreme x2o (www.xooma.ca) ...This has Calcium, Magnesium and over 70 trace minerals...My Body did not suffer any depletion whatsoever. When you add this x2o to water, it changes the structure of the water, allowing the minerals to go straight to the cells.....
Your body needs Calcium and Magnesium for all muscle contraction and nerve impulses....
I am still using it, as well we are incorporating it into Tylers baby Formula..Most formulas have only 11 or 12 minerals...Like I said, the body needs MINERALS for all of its bodily functions..Tyler is never constipated, and has NO COLIC...He sleeps well, and is a very happy baby..
It is very very important, to start using this product (There is no other one like it on the planet) as soon as possible so you can pass along the bennefits if the minerals to your child...
e-mail me personally if you need more info.. ____@____.com

PS: I went back to work 2 weeks after delivery, and I am Not only Feeling GREAT, My body didnt suffer any damages to lost mineral deficiencies....................

Same problem when I was nursing, it was really bad in my wrists. My old doc (a very old man) told me to stop breastfeeding because it was taking so much out of me-I didn't, but he also tested me for Arthritis & Lupus. I looked at him like he was nuts with the Lupus, but it strangely came up positive (ANA), nothing has come out of it 2 years later, but it's something I have to watch out for now.

Your body is changing, again, and your nutritional needs are changing also. Try adding or increasing foods that are high in potasium and calcium. Broccoli, and bananas are both good. Use your joints as much as possible, there are natural fluids that can get trapped and movement is the best solution. I know it hurts but keep your chin up diet, exersize and heat really help and you will get through this. If you want to use any pain killers ask your doctor if you can take ibupruphrine now as you are weaning the baby. Tylonal is ok as a pain killer but you need an anti-inflamitory to help calm the joints and associated soft tissue.
Good Luck

I had a similar problem after my pregnancy. I had no symptoms until my son was about 6-7 months (about the time I stopped nursing). Unfortunately for me, it was not good news. It turned out to be R.A. rhuematoid arthritis. It started as an intense pain in my left ankle, like I had sprained it real bad. Coulnd't walk on it, it was really bad. And then, about 48 hours later it was completely gone. A few weeks later it happened again, this time in my right knee, and then my left, and then in my other ankle, shoulder...it was really random and inconsistent. I went to the doctor about 4-5 months later...if this sounds like what you are experiencing you can reply and I can give you more info...

Apparently this is not that uncommon (small comfort I know to hear you are not alone,but...), and it doesn't seem like there is an easy answer as it what causes it and how to eliminate it. Some people have had luck with physical therapy and nutrition/vitamin therapy. You should definitely discuss with your doc, and persevere if you don't feel like your situation is being taken seriously. Best of luck!

Is the pain primarily worse in the morning? Does it affect both sides (hands)? If so, you may want to talk to your doctor. It may be wise to ask him about Rheumatoid Arthritis. It usually affects women between 35-50 during child bearing years. I was diagnosed at 40. It can be tough disease, but there are some wonderful medications available. Hope this helps.

Hi! I agree that you should definitely get checked by your doctor for RA and calcium deficiency. They can also test to see if you have inflammation in your body, but not necessarily arthritis. For my own inflammation issues, using the Anti-Inflammation Diet tips from Dr. Andrew Weill helped immensely. Just Google "anti-inflammation diet" and you'll find info on supplements like fish oil, G. and turmeric, which have all been proven in clinical studies to reduce inflammation. You can also reduce or eliminate white/refined foods (white flour, white rice, refined white sugar) and that helps too. Flossing daily also makes a big difference.
Good luck!
