I want to go back to work....I have been home many years. I have a teaching degree but want to do something different. I am also considering a separation and need to start working on becoming independent. I have heard that both Starbucks and Home Depot are good companies for someone like me. I would welcome any info. on jobs here and other places. Do they have good benefits? About how much does a barista vs a shift supervisor make at Starbucks? Salaries at Home Depot? Or, is there any other place that would be a good start to step back into the work place?

What can I do next?

Ikea is supposed to be a phenomenal place for working mothers- if you have one. I've also heard Kohls has good benefits.

Gosh I would imagine both would be minimum wage - If you have a teaching degree it would be wise to use that, or further it in an area that you are interested in, teach for now, tutor, or whatever.

Both would pay barely over minimum wage - maybe $7 - 8.50 an hour. A shift supervisor has many more responsibilities for about $1 more per hour.

Have you considered checking into a temp agency or contract services company? Robert Half or Manpower or something like that? The pay and working conditions would be better.

Are you sure you don't want an office job, with normal hours, pay that's higher than minimum wage, and benefits?

Retail is not going to pay well, and the schedule is not really conducive to being a single mom. Retail doesn't always have benefits, either.

I loved working for HEB if you have one in your town/area.
I also have a teaching degree, and if I went back to work, my first choice would be HEB. They pay well, give you your breaks and lunches, give you a free turkey at Thanksgiving. I don't know about their benefits. I always worked part-time thru college. They are a great company imo.

Look into Best Buy as well. I hear that it has a terrific corporate culture to work for.

And I agree - you can make more doing other things. Even an Admin Assitant will pay more. But retail will have flexibility.

Good luck!

I'm not sure about Home Depot, but I have heard that Starbucks offers phenomenal benefits for their employees.

I've heard wonderful things about Starbucks and my BIL is a manager in Maryland, and he is always willing to work around a schedule. Part time employees also get health insurance, which will be big if decide to separate. I've heard not so good things about Home Depot, but to be honest the last time I heard negative things was over 10 years ago, but they were really difficult to work with (again in Maryland) when it came time for my other BIL to take time off for his kids. Home Depot was his second job and they were quite strict about his schedule and scheduled him for days he previously told them he couldn't work and then they would get angry and threate to fire him.

If you are looking at retail apply at a store where you like to shop. Stores will be putting on Holiday help soon and may of those seasonal jobs roll over to permenant. You will get the employee discount, usually 20%, and can keep an eye on stuff you like and want to buy for holiday gifts.
I worked at Penney's for 3.5 yrs and was able to get my grandkids huge bags of clothes for their birthdays and Christmas. As well as nice bedding for my kids. When I worked there Penney's would have employee day 3 times a year, on that day we got 35% discount. You discount even applies to clearance, I was able to get $80 outfits for about $2.
A lot of Penney's employees work a regular full-time job and work at Penney's nights and weekends, just to keep their discount.
