Hi Moms,

I've applied to jobs online, and have gotten a reply back from 2 companies that looks suspicious. Since companies often post without contact info, it's not obvious which application it came from. Does this look like a scam? Do you know where I can report it? Thanks! Here's the text of the letters- they're the same letter from two different companies, and their websites are a little "hinky":

"I would like to take this moment to thank you for your response to our Craigslist job posting, as well as inform you that, after reading through your resume, we are interested in discussing this job opportunity with you in person. As of this moment, we have narrowed the field down to 3 potential candidates, yourself being one of them.

I would like to congratulate you in making it to the next step of our hiring process. As part of our company's policy, and to protect our company from liabilities and potential issues, the next step of the hiring process includes getting your credit score checked. Please be aware, that a poor score in no way disqualifies you from the position, but simply helps us to get a better understanding of you, and what we can expect from you as an employee.

So we have arranged a FREE service at www.creditreport.com for you to obtain your score. Once you have completed this process, please email me the confirmation # ASAP, so we can move forward. Do NOT include your SSN or any private information in any emails. Please perform this step as soon as you can, as we would like to fill the position soon. Once we receive confirmation that you have completed this step, myself or Mr. Levy, our office manager, will get back to you to set up the face to face interview.

I've had my credit checked for jobs in the past, but that was after the interviewing process. Also, I've never had a job where they told me, based of a resume, that they have limited the field to just a set number of candidates. I would stay away from it. I've never had a legit job respond by email, except to say that they received my resume. After that, I've always received a call to discuss the opportunity.

The hiring process doesn't work that way, it's a total scam. Flag it on Craigslist. Sorry.

No, No, No, do not do it.
they will gather your date - Birthdate, Social Security, everything, and either steal your identity or scam your accounts.

I received on of those, and responded with an email asking why they wanted a credit report *before* a personal interview or a telephone call. I offered to have my bank prepare a credit rating letter for them also.

I never received a response.

These are not legitimate employment offers.

I would not. I have a friend that applied to jobs online and they asked her to come in to fill out paperwork, including a form regarding credit check. The link could be a false link or malware. Like others have mentioned, never click on a link within an email. To get a credit score, you have to enter your info to get a credit report generated. With a false site, you would really put yourself at risk. Scammers--or I prefer to call them scummers--are getting really sophisticated and realizing that people are not falling for their hype.

In some industries you do have to have good credit. Insurance, financial planning, etc. They do check our criminal background and credit. But not the score. That actual credit. We sign giving them permission to pull it and then they review it for signs of fraud, poor jusdgement, etc. The score would be meaningless to an employer. I think by emailing them the confirmation number you might be agreeing to something. I would definately not do this.

This does not sound right given the fact they they don't identify themselves in this response. I wouldn't respond.

I think a legitimate company would identify themselves and that your credit history (not your score) if it were necessary would be asked for further down the line. I think a personal interview would take precedence over a credit history.

They admit that the score doesn't matter as to your being hired. So why are they asking for it. This just doesn't make sense to me.

SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, companies do credit checks. They do them not you. If you give them the confirmation #, you're giving a stranger all your personal information.

No, do NOT do this...it is a scam.

If they haven't spoken to you? but they've narrowed it down to three candidates and you are one of them?

You need a company name, contact information, etc. while there are a number of companies that do credit checks prior to hiring, that's one of the last things that they do AT THEIR EXPENSE, not yours.

sorry!!!

Yes some people do check your credit report.

Did you apply for jobs on craigslist? Does the email mention the job you supposedly applied for? I personally would not do this until after you had an in person interview.
