Hello,
I'm pretty sure I'm going to get an IUD but I always love to crowd source you wonderful ladies since I always get such great feedback from you guys. I was originally thinking of getting it without hormones just because I'm weary of long term hormones and I was on the pill for over 10 years in the past. I guess I'd love to hear if there is a big difference with periods and cramping between the two. Anything else you have to share I'd love to hear as well :)

Thanks so much!

I had a Mirena and loved it. I was sensitive to the hormones in BCPs but the dosage in the Mirena is much lower and caused no problems for me. Periods were very light, if at all.

I got a Mirena (hormonal) and I am in my fifth year now. I love it so much I will get another one at the end of the year.
I have almost no periods: every couple of months only a bit of spotting. I used to get pretty bad cramps and diarrhea with my period, so it is definitely a relief.
I was on the pill (several brands) for 10+ years before I got pregnant (on it) and always had one side effect or the other, which is why I changed brands so often: hair loss, moodiness, lack of libido...there was always something.
I have none of these symptoms with Mirena.
I was considering the copper IUD before I had got the hormonal one, but my midwife advised that it often causes stronger periods, so that was definitely not for me.
Good luck!

I had the Mirena put in the help with heavy bleeding. WOW did I love it. It took my period away for the most part. Then somehow it moved on me, and the heavy period came back. :( There was a little cramping when they placed it in, but the next day you were fine. Removal was actually less pain..actually there was really no pain.
Doctor gave me no explanation as to why it moved or how. It was a last chance to save my uterus from a hysterectomy. I am scheduled for surgery in 4 weeks.

I had the copper one first and it fell out. I only had it for about a month before it fell out so I don't know if I experienced any side effects from it. I have had the Mirena for over a year now and LOVE it! If anything it has helped control my emotions. Even my husband has noticed how even keel it has made me...no more periods = one happy lady! I spot during my period time for maybe 24 hours and then its gone. I also have no other period symptoms (bloating, cramping, mood swings, cravings). It's great to have sex whenever we want and not have to worry about it! I'd say go for it...if it doesn't work out you can always get it removed.

I went the non-hormonal route, because I tried the shot after my second child was born, and reacted very badly to it. The pill was never a problem for me, but the mega-doses in the shot were, and I was afraid the constant stream from an hormonal IUD would be the same. I was NOT going to go another long-term route that I couldn't get out of quickly enough. The only problem I've had from the IUD is that my periods are heavier - although after about 14 months (I'm on month 17 now), it slowed a bit. I don't know if I'm finally adjusting, but I hope so! I haven't had much cramping, but didn't cramp much before, either.

I have the Mirena, my second one and I love it. I havent had a full blown on period since my 9 year old was 6 weeks! I also had a friend who had the Mirena and she had opposite reaction, lots of bleeding and had it removed. I think it just depends on your body. I would definatly give it a try and if you have any bad reactions it is easy to have removed. Good luck!

I had the Mirena IUD and I loved it! I took it out last month because we are trying to get pregnant, and as soon as we have baby #2 I will get one put in again. Its a little painful getting put in, like a pinch but not too bad. Getting it taken out doesn't hurt at all. I had no period the whole time I had mine in. The only downside I had was that my husband could feel the strings during sex.

I highly recommend Mirena!

I've had about 10 of my friends get rid of Mirena (the hormone IUD) and have it switched out for Paragard (the copper IUD). ALL of them have been less moody, etc on the copper one....and less spotting and cramping.

I had both types of IUDs. I am very sensitive and I didn't like either of them. I had the copper one first. I had horrible, long heavy periods with bad cramps, and they were never predictable either. After almost 2 years I just couldn't gut it out anymore (the PA kept telling me if I waited a little longer it would get better, well 2 yrs was long enough). Then I got the MIrena. The periods were better and cramping not so bad. But...I had bad digestive issues before my period, horrible acne, and weight gain. My best friend has a Mirena and loves it. She said the catch is if you don't go over a certain weight, like 125, you will not get your period at all. She is short and small framed. Sadly, I am not and never will be.

I had the Paraguard for about a week. No pain at all with insertion. I wanted to be hormone free after 17 yrs on the pill.

Unfortunatley for me, it shifted. And I'm DONE having kids. So I was so terrified that it wasn't effective due to the shift that I had it taken out. (We found out after the fact that as long as it's in there, it's effective.)

After all that, I decided that since I'm done having kids, I wanted to be done with "birth control" all together. So I had Essure done.
No pain with the procedure, in and out in 30 minutes, and I've just had my verification test that I'm 100% blocked. No more hormones or BC ever again!
It's awesome!

The Mirena is fabulous and I highly recommend it. I've been on it for about 4 years with no periods and only occasional spotting (maybe once every few months lasting no more than a day). The comment below about having to weigh a certain amount isn't true...at least not in my experience or in the experience of others that I know. I will definitely be getting another one when my 5 years is up!

I had the Mirena for 7 months before I had it removed. I started spotting the day they put it in and never stopped! I couldn't stand it. I also felt that my emotions were out of whack. Good luck with whatever route you choose.
