IUD Question - Round Lake, IL

My OB told me the same thing, but because I am still BF-ing I don't have a period so he put it in. So, I think that's the case.

Sure you are not pregnant? It happens all the time. After 2-3mos nursing does nothing to stop your cycle really. I got my period despite nursing full time when my daughter was around 2mos old, meaning the cycle started up around 1 mos after her birth only. I know a lot of women dont get it while nursing though, so its just a thought!

I was going to get the Mirena IUD after my daughter was born, because we were convinced we were done (new baby is due in June, lol). I was told I HAD to come in during my period because it was easier to put in (I know, several other women have said the same thing). The day before the procedure I got a call and it turned out our insurance did not cover any form of birth control other than the standard pill. No patch, no IUD, and I think no vasectomy for my husband (though he says he's getting it anyway after the birth of this baby, our second daughter).

My doc and I have been talking about IUD's for my entire pregnancy this time around, because no other birth control seems to work for me. Im scheduled to have the IUD inserted at my 6 wk checkup, breast feeding or not, period or not. Ive never heard that you'd have to wait for your period to start. I didn't have to wait last time when starting the pill either, which usually you have to wait for your cycle to start those.

as far as I know most doctors want to insert the IUD during your period- mostly because then they are 100% sure that you are not pregnant. However, with such good pregnancy test these days, I think this is considered more the way things used to be done and now as long as your pregnancy test is negative it's okay to get one. It may depend too on which type you get- one has a low dose hormone and one has none.

Yes, you have to wait until you get your period because they don't want you to risk the chance you might be pregnant again. If an IUD is put in with the possibility of being pregnant, you could end up with a tubal or etopic pregnancy, which would be devastating to your body and your emotions. Trust your doctor, as soon as you get your period, they'll put it in.

On a side note, I had my IUD put in about 6-8 weeks after I stopped nursing, and ended up having it removed 4 months later. It was so painful! I had cramps all the time, and my periods lasted 14-16 days!

My certified nurse midwife wanted me to stop bleeding from the pregnancy before she put it in, but had no problem putting it in before I got my period. In fact, I chose it because it was one of the bc methods I was told was safe for breastfeeding. I would question your doctor further and would be interested to hear what his reasoning is.

I currently have a Mirena IUD in. They had to wait to put it in while I was on my period. If you don't wait til then you have to be manually dialated to get the iud into the uterus. While you are on you period you are already opened up. I guess it is the safest, easiest, and cheapest way to do it. I thought it was kind of weird too and I had issues with doing it while on my period but... you gotta do what you have to do. Any oher questions just let me know. :)

I was told the same thing. That I had to wait until I got a period. I was a bit confused too.

It is normal for the IUD to be inserted during your period. If you are getting Mirena I think it is because of the hormones in it and being in synch with your cycle.

As for nursing and periods... it took mine 1 year to come back after I stopped nursing. Maybe you need a second opinion about the IUD because it could be a while depending on your body.

Didn't get an IUD. Just wanted to tell you that I still got a period while nursing. My boys were 21 months when I stopped nursing each of them and got my period back when they were about four months old.

I didn't have to wait until I got my period, but that was over 5 years ago. Things may have changed since then. I definitely recommend the IUD. It is an easy form of birth control.

I didn't ask about the IUD, but I did get the Nuvaring in which I love. But I was told to wait till I got my period. Better yet, I was able to put it in after I delivered, while I was still bleeding from giving birth, somewhere around my 2nd or 3rd week I believe cause he gave me the perscription like during my 2 week check-up.

My doctor initally told me to wait until I got my period, but I insisted, and she was able to insert the Mirena with no issues. It's a good thing I didn't wait, because my son is 15 months old, I stopped breastfeeding in November, and my periods still has not resumed. It's completely possible, it's just easier for them if you have your period. You should either press your doctor, or find a new one.

My sister is getting one and the reason they wait until you have your period is that you are a little dialated at that time and it's easier to put it in. Sounds gross but it's true.

I had mine put in at my 6 week check up 7 years ago! My doctor told me the same thing, and I asked why, he told me they had to be sure, like really sure that I was not pregnant. Well, I was really sure, because my husband and I had not been intimate yet. I was waiting for the ok from my doctor. So, it really has to do with the fact of a risk of your health if you can't guarantee you aren't pregnant.

I had my IUD put in about 8 weeks after I gave birth. I happened to be weaning at that point, so I had my period. My doctor said that its just easier to put one in when you have your period. Be warned though, I havent had a period since right before I got pregnant! Almost two years now! It's weird, but I just take a preg. test about every three months just to be safe.

I just one (Mirena) & the doctor said I had to wait until my period. Sounds gross, but they actually have to insert it while you have your period.
