Itchy Scalp on My 5 Year Old!

My son has recently started complaining about his head itching really bad. I have of course checked him for head lice since he goes to a public day care, and he was clean. Any suggestions on a mild shampoo that would help him? He still freaks if he gets even water in his eyes, so a tear free formula would be preferred, but if there isn't anything out there like that, we are willing to try just about anything. Poor guy looks like he has fleas with all the scratching! lol

What can I do next?

Our 4 yo had cradle cap and was scratching her head a lot. We used California baby shampoo, and also started using the conditioner. It works really well.

How often are you shampooing his hair? Little kids, unless they're rolling around in the dirt, sand at the playground, getting really sweaty, etc really don't need their hair washed more than twice a week - and even less ddepedning on the kid.

He could also have eczema - which my son and I both have. I use a dandruff shampoo that's not cheap - but it does work and my scalp is no longer constanty itchy. I know that when I've had a lot of tomatoes or tomato products or other acidic foods I have more itchy probelms.

Also - if he drinks a lot of water that also helps - just hydrates the body more.

Good luck mama!

We had a similar issue last summer. I took my daughter to the doctor to have her head checked, there were no lice. I went to the doctor to have my itchy head checked, there were no lice. It wasn't until our blond (the rest of us are brunette) child got head lice that we actually saw them. I would buy a good, fine tooth comb to check for lice and nits. I had to pay $10 for one at the Dillons Pharmacy before we were able to see them.

Does your son have seasonal allergies ? My boys both do and my 7 year old's head itches when his get going. I went to using a dandruff shampoo (even though they don't have dandruff) and it seems to help. I wonder if you can find a tear free dandruff shampoo ? Hope this helps some !

Does he have any bumps or rash? If so, you might take him to the doc. I developed some on my hairline and finally was seen and was treated with antibiotics. Picked up some weird skin rash from the mats at the gym.
