ISO Heavyweight Infant Swing

My 4 month, 3 week old infant daughter is HUGE, weighing a solid 18.5 lbs, and 27 in. long. She's starting to go through sleep regression and likes her swing, but is nearly at its weight limit. I'm assuming she's going to keep growing at the rate she has been (about a pound and a half every week or so), and will be more than 25 lbs in another month or two. Are there any swings that can support weights beyond 25 lbs? Despite all my searching and googling, the max I'm finding is 25lbs, and I'd like her to be able to keep using her swing until she's at least 12 months, since she likes it so much.

What can I do next?

She can’t be in a swing for a year anyway. As soon as she can sit up, not only will she not like it, but you need to put the swing away because it won’t be safe. Swings are for infants who just lay there. Enjoy her love of the swing now.

My kids were on the top of the scale too - and this was years ago, but Fisher Price was the best for us (the brand). Their motors could handle our babes. We tried them all.

I can't imagine using them for 12 months though. They wouldn't have had any interest. Ours were out long before that - by the time they were sitting up on the floor, etc. and active, they had no interest. So might not be the best to invest in one.

Her growth will slow down (she won't be 156lbs at age 2).

And she will have other interests and sleep patterns.

Just take it day by day. See how it looks in a month.

Welcome to mamapedia, M.

Your Five month old daughter is growing. You need to Mommy-up and learn how to sooth your daughter as she won't be in a swing for more than 2 more months - when she starts crawling and moving...the swing won't be there for her anymore...You will need to find other ways to soothe your child and help get her "tired" and ready for naps and sleeping.

her routine will change as she grows, stays up longer and uses more energy. You can't confine her to a swing until she is one year old - that's just unreasonable.

Please talk with your pediatrician about her growing, what she will be doing and how to handle her changes.

Her growth will slow down. In a swing until a year? Chances are she will be crawling and walking and not interested in swinging.

We got our son a Joki Indoor Hammock Swing, rated at 175 pounds, when he was 2 years old. He's not so heavy, but has always been about 98 percentile in height. The Joki is rated for 3+ years, but a similar (and cheaper) swing by OUTREE, rated at 170 pounds, says it's for 2+. An infant would need supervision, obviously. We originally bought the swing because my son is severely autistic, and we hoped the "holding" sensation would calm him. It helped for a while. Now, at 4 years old, he just likes it as a swing. Yes, it's durable. My 13-year-old uses it, too! Search for "sensory swings," and you'll find both.

i have not seen any swings that will hold more weight, but my little ones always enjoyed resting in their swing too but did not hit 25lbs till over a year old, could you put her in the swing and just not turn it on, i would think the weight limit is more for the motor to swing it by itself. if not i recently got one of those little tikes swings for the outside swingset and my 1 year old loves it, they are good to use till age 4, could you have your husband install the hooks in a doorway in the house to use indoors? obviously you would have to be in the room with her but she could still enjoy swinging then

Hi there M.,

I love it when I see big healthy babies, the cubby cheeks and little rolls..... I can’t lol. Are you using the swing to put you baby to sleep? I always tell my parents to slowly over time limit the use of swings, rockers, and other methods such as bouncing rocking and driving to get baby ready for sleep unless you will be okay doing these things well after your child in one or even two years old. Yes, I said two.... The reason why is if you have been using these things after five months, then your child is probably not sleep trained (which is imperative for parents’ sanity). And if your child isn’t sleep trained you will have to continue these methods longer than you planned if the baby is not willing to give it up. Imagine yourself bouncing a 1.5 to sleep.... also the swing won’t be an option. I had a mom spending $60 per week in extra gas to drive her two year old around to sleep, and guess what..... she couldn’t stop the car or transfer he without running all the work. It is ridiculous. My advice is sleep train you daughter.
