Hello, I was worried about my 2 year old, he went in yesterday for a fallow up with my husband, and when they got back my hubby was like, Hey guess How much he weighs..... 40lbs I was SHOCKED! 40lbs is that normal? I mean are there average 2 year olds that weigh that? My 3-year-old girl is in good weight? I'm just scared he will turn out to be like my brother, My sister and I are both slender and my brother was and is Very Over weight, I am scared history repeats its self my 2 girls are slender well that is I'm not sure yet because my youngest is 7 months, but anyway. They all eat the same, not to much junk even though he loves French fries I refuse to give them to him. They eat what normal toddlers eat. As a matter of fact the only juice they consume is ones I make in the juicer all veggies and Fruit nothing added.

What can I do next?

I agree with others. If it were a concern, the pediatrician would have said so. It also comes down to his height. My daughter's weight was always more because she's in the 95th percentile for height. My son is short for his age so his weight is always low. ANd don't forget what baby fat is. My son was a cute little porker when he was younger and now he's thin.

I would just keep an eye on him. I will tell you a little story.
My baby sister (she's almost 11 years younger) was skinny and tall all of her childhood. I bean like #2 pencil skinny as was I. After she graduated high school and went off to college she like went nuts on all the stuff that my mom wouldn't let her eat. I mean nuts on this stuff, sodas, cookies, chips. My sister then started getting larger and larger and now at age 27 she is 240 pounds, can't breath well, blood sugar is messed up and feels horrible all of the time, her self esteem is in the toilet and she's with this guy who is larger than her now and is a slug, won't work longer than a couple of months at a time. All because she thinks she can't do any better because she's so heavy.

So, while keeping your kids on a healthy diet is great. Keeping things from them that other kids eat completely isn't a good thing in the long run.

The doctor should show you on a chart what percentile your child's weight and height is in relationship to his age and those of kids his age. So if he's in the 50th percentile or close to it then he's fine.
Just keep him active and stay away from the sugars as much as possible.

Well I love growth charts for things like this. Since i don't know the birthday of your child or the past history of weight I can't tell you if this should be a surprise or not. I will let you take a look for yourself.

I agree with a couple of the responses... Is he tall for his age? What has the pediatrician said if anything?
I have twin boys and they are 2.6 years old and they are around 30-32 lbs. My niece who is 5 years old weighs between 40-45 lbs, but she to me is tall and slender.
I would definitely call the dr's office to check his height and weight on the growth chart. If he has been steady in the 75th percentile and up for height and weight that's probably a good reason why the dr hasn't said much, because for his height he can handle his weight. Does that make sense?
Good Luck

I would think your pediatrician would have said something if your child's weight was an issue. If not, I would inquire with him/her.

But to give you an idea about my son, he always was off the scale with his weight and specifically how tall he was. I believe at 2 years old he was around 30 pounds. Now he is 2.4 years old and weighs around 32.

You didn't say how tall he was....and yes two year olds can be heavy. My first daughter was very heavy. She wasn't fat. She was so muscular she could carry two gallons of milk (with no effort) at the grocery store for me when I was pregnant. You need to look at how he's built and how much activity he has. (She's a beautiful 15 year old now!)

It's sounds like his nutrition is there. Don't worry. Just keep doing what you're doing!

it all come down to the height weight ratio your ped keeps. if he's not chunky then i wouldn't worry about it. my 3 yr old is close to 40 lbs but she is think she is a little taller than average 3 yr olds which accounts for it. if the ped wasn't concerned then he's fine they will tell you if he is over weight in a bad way :)

My two-year-old is also 40 lbs. He weighs more than both of my nieces (four and five). But he's also very tall and, so far, has his Daddy's fast metabolism.

I was a chunky child, so I worry a lot too. But my mom fed me too much junk. As long as you feed him well and raise him to be active, I wouldn't worry about it. I have to tell myself that every day. ;)

He's probably fine. But if you're worried, maybe you could call your ped. I don't know about your hubby, but mine tends to leave out/forget details when he takes our son to the doc. He's usually pre-occupied with pride over our son's weight; like he's a power-lifter or something!

How tall is your son? Ours is almost 36 in.
