Is My 17 Month Old Face Rash Due to Teething?

My son is 17 months old and seems to be getting his incisors. He has been drooling a lot and has been a little cranky. He also has this patchy red rash on his face. Has any one else seen this in your child? If so, is their anything that you did to help? My son has a doctor's appointment in a couple of days so I will ask about it there but didn't know if anyone else had some answers before then.

What can I do next?

My son - same age, same teeth, lots of drool & same rash! He likes the binki when teething but I've noticed the MAM type seems to worsen it - Nuk not as much. I sometimes feel like teething never ends!

My son is the same age and he's had this rash for over a month now. At first I bought and tried Eucerin but that didn't work. The pediatrician recommended Aquaphor and that has worked wonders! I also use it on my chapped lips :D
I like the small 2-pack of tubes (so I can keep one with me).
It has cleared up his rash entirely. I put it on after his bath at night and in the morning when getting him dressed. The consistency is like Vaseline; a little goes a long way.

If it's just on his chin, or generally where the drool collects, then yes, it's probably teething and saliva that's irritating his skin. If it's more all over, then it's possibly something else.

Probably - the extra saliva can be irritating.

Use lanolin for breastfeeding. It will soothe the rash, and won't cause any harm if he gets it in his mouth. My girlie tended to try to rub it off, so I would put it on @ nap time and bedtime

The aquaphor didn't work for me so I used the same lanolin ointment we used during nursing. It had better staying power at night and didn't rub off. It really did the trick and was so natural as not to cause any further irritation.

Could definitely be from drool - but my daughter would get it if she had too much dairy products - turned out she was mildly allergic. Rash would get worse the more she had, so we'd just lay off for a bit when I saw it start. Maybe he has some kind of mild allergy?

my daughter had a rash on her cheeks while she was teething. It didn't seem to bother her too much so i just left it alone. If his cheeks seem chapped try using some aveeno or eucerin lotion that is not scented at night before he goes to bed.

Yes!! We have experienced this... use aquaphor like the other ladies said....(the kind like vaseline)...... ESPECIALLY use it just before he goes to bed, nap or bedtime........ I noticed with my child, once she fell asleep she'd drool so much that she was laying in a puddle of it!!! Once I started the aquaphor, it created a barrier so that skin wasnt in direct contact with that drool.... Plus moving her out of the drool puddle helped too!!! Her's cleared up pretty quick!! Best of Luck

dry it completely and then put aquifor on it a few times a day. It is probably due to teething unless you have introduced a new food in his diet.

I had both of mine getting face rashes when teething. I think lots of it has to do with the drooling and the bothering of the mouth. I hope that helps.

Hi H.,

I don't know if you are in the same perdicament I was in, but does your son still use a pascifier? My 8 month old son had a red, patchy rash around some of his mouth. He have tried to stop using it and the rash is going away. I took him to the doctor and they never even suggested it could be the pacifier. They perscribed Hydrocotozone 2%, but that did not help at all. They also suggested Aquafor, but that didn't work either. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

I should think the rash is due to the teething. Sorta like when you get ill and your resistance is down you can easily get a yeast infection.. actually you dont "get" it, the bacteria are there all the time and a healthy body will keep it under control. When you become ill it can surface.
Same thing with baby. The rash is called roseola or some such. It will go away on its own but it would do no harm to feed him yogurt with live cultures in it to replace the bacteria depleted by the weakening of his immune system from the teething. ( Yogurt is also basic need if you have yeast infection)
You could even take ( plain ) yogurt and rub a bit onto the rash..( you too, on your equipment for yeast infection)
Roseola used to be quite common in my day of raising babies.
No harm in checking with doctor but I dont think you need to have any great worries about it hon.
Best wishes and God bless

My son had the same thing when he was younger. Our doc recommended Aquifor and using Dove WHITE in the tub.(watch his eyes though) It is probably from his teeth as long as you haven't changed soaps, food or are using different wipes or anything on his face. Rashes and teething seem to go hand in hand with my son.
