Is Motion Sickness on a Cruise Common, and Are There Cures?

I was just wondering if it is common for people to get motion sickness on a cruise? I am prone to easily get motion sickness, so am worried that I might not be able to enjoy myself on a cruise. Even though it will be a big boat...won't I still feel the rocking? Aside from Dramamine (I don't want to be drowsy the entire time), what else works? Wrist bands?

I will be "cruising" next month and am also still nursing my 7-month old. I'm not sure what would be safe for me to take (and still be able to nurse my son while we're on the boat)?

Thank you so much for your advice/suggestions! :)

What can I do next?

I went on my first cruise 2 years ago. I was very fearful of getting sick. I used the transderm patch. It says on the patch "may cause bluriness". Well, I was lucky and had blurry vision for 3 days, couldn't even see what was on my dinner plate, it was all a big blob! I do not imagine that would be safe to take during nursing. I did switch to dramamine and I think they have a non drowsy formula, still not s sure about nursing with it. If you are feeling sea sick you could try ginger. I bought some candied ginger at a health food store before we went and ate it whenever I felt a bit under the weather. That seemed to help and would be safe while nursing. I would suggest the arm bands, and ginger.

My husband suffers from really bad motion sickness. When we took a cruise he used a patch perscribed by his doctor. It works very well, my son and brother inlaw used it too. Talk to your doctor about what your choices are best for breast feeding, and avoid dramamine if you can. Is that safe for breast feeding? I have a little motion sickness, and I used a wrist band. It depends on where you are sailing as to the degree of motion on the ship. If you have a lot of days at "sea" then you will probably be traveling at higher speed and feeling more motion. If you are in port every day then you will be traveling slower.

The transderm behind the ear patches work magic. I am prone to motion sickness, and used these patches on our last cuise- with no problems. Even on the largest cruise ships you can feel it moving, so I would strongly recommend calling your Primary care Physician and getting prescription for these patches (ask about nursing). I would recommend putting them on and changing them at night before you go to sleep. This will help you prevent drowsiness. I had no problems and enjoyed our cruise to the fullest. Good luck and have fun!

Wrist bands work well for this situation. A cruise on a ship isn't as bad as a boat ride, but I'd have wrist bands with you in case.

There are also wristbands that can be used that are supposed to work very well. I was on a cruise a month ago and they were sold on board. My mom also swears by Bonine.

You really only to use whateever you take the first day or two until your body is accostmed to the movement. I usually have more of a problem with motion sickness after the cruise is done. It may feel to you like the land is moving. I felt worse afterwards and took the most Dramamine then.

Be sure to check with your children's doctors about what to do if motion sickness affects them. I think most of the medicine isn't safe for little ones.

I went on my first cruise a couple of years ago and I was worried about motion sickness too. I took the non-drowsy form of Dramamine as directed and I also wore the wrist bands at night. You can get the wrist bands at the drugstore in the same section where the Dramamine is. I didn't really feel the ship move though, only going in and out of port. It doesn't rock like a regular boat does. I was on the ship for a few days and never felt any sickness. Ask you Dr. about taking Dramamine while nursing because I'm not sure about that. The non-drowsy formula works really well, I didn't feel tired at all while taking it.

NAET - Nambudripad's Allergy Elmination Treatment - does cure it. I've used it to clear allergies successfully for me and my baby. I had a friend who had motion sickness and this cleared it. Find a practioner near you. It usually takes one non-invasive treatment. It uses a combination of muscle testing and accupuncture pressure points (no needles). Dr. Christine Northrup speaks highly of it in her books. Please try it. I and my family (a visiting cousin was treated for Iron allergy - she has far less post operative bleeding thanks to it. She had a benign facial tumor and over 12 surgeries. After each she bled a lot from her nose. No blood loss this time and it cured her low anemia.)

Thomas Hale, MD is a medical researcher and publishes a book annually that rates the safety of medicines for breastfeeding. It's called A MEDICATIONS GUIDE FOR BREASTFEEDING MOMS. Only a doctor who has that book on hand knows what he/she is talking about.

Every La Leche League Leader has one, and phone calls to them are FREE. Just call your local LLL Leader and ask her to please look up X medicinek and if it's safe for breastfeeding. If you don't have a local chapter, call ANY chapter and it's fine.

Have fun! I've never been on a cruise, but I don't imagine they wave much at all.
