Is It True That Ergo Baby Carriers Do Not Work Well for Moms Who Are Short?

I hear how great Ergo carriers are all the time and am thinking of getting one. Although I've started hearing that they do not work well for petite/short moms. I'm 5 feet even. What's your experience. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Another response from a 5 feet 2 inch petite mom. It worked really really well for me and I would definitely use it again if I were to have another child again.

I am 5'1 and loved my carrier as did my son. I look forward to using it with my second child. I suggest you try it on if possible as it can be adjusted.

I'm 5'4" and it worked fine for me. It may be more of a frame question than a height thing. Perhaps it's the size/length of the upper body? May be worth a phone call to the manufacturer.

I'm 5 ft tall and very short waisted and it didn't work at all for me. The way it rested on my hips was very uncomfortable.

I was so excited to get an Ergo, and then I hated it. :( I'm just five feet, and it absolutely did not work for my frame. The carrier just hung way too low and put so much pressure on my hips. I really wanted it to work, but it just didn't. I sold a couple of weeks later.

I am not sure how it will work for you, but my sil LOVES her ergo! I would recommend borrowing it from someone and trying it on.

i'm 5'2" and it worked great for me! i preferred it over a stroller, and i carried my 24 lb daughter in it until she preferred walking. i've never had back or hip problems, but i will say that my feet hurt for a bit after lugging her around all over downtown chicago when we vacationed there for a week. (i wanted to travel light and i made it possible without a stroller!) perhaps 5'2" is the cutoff for those who like it vs. those who don't?

Try it on. I have a friend who loves it and a friend of a similar size who says it didn't sit right on her when she tried it so she got another brand. I think you need to physically try as many carriers as you are interested in to find the best fit. Most big box baby stores will have samples.

Personally, I did not shop around like I tell other people to do and had a Bjorn. It worked well for us and I'm 5'1" on a good day. But I like the versatility of other carriers I've now seen.

I'm 5ft 2 inches and Love my Ergo! I don't know if you have a Buy Buy baby in your area but I was able to try on a lot of different carriers there and chose the Ergo. I also have a Moby Wrap which I love as well!

Good Luck!

Check out the various syles of ergos, too. I think the sport and other new one would be better for shorter people, because they were way too small for me at 5'8". REI has a good selection of them to try on now. Then you could go to the website and buy the color you like best :) For the record, I LOVE my ergo! I have my original one from 4.5 years ago, and just bought one of the organic ones (so soft!) and just love them! Never used my past 5 months/16 pounds with my first baby. But used my Ergo through both kids, for 4.5 years, 42 pounds.

I am just over 5'1 and really liked the Ergo. If you have a membership at Natural Resources you can rent one for $5 I think to test it out before you buy it. I also had a Moby wrap but it was much more of a hassle.

Another 5'2" mom. LOVE it!!! Even used it up until my son was 2yo (he likes to walk more), and I use it with my 21mo daughter :) I would recommend, however, to get the classic, not the sport. I'm pretty sure the Sport was made for dads or taller moms because I've heard shorter moms say that they feel they can't get it quite tight enough. Worth every penny of the $100 I paid!!!!

I'm petite-- short. under 5'3". the ergo is my favorite of my 4 carriers. my back hurts no matter what but hurts the least with the ergo. but I have a big baby. if you have a little baby, check out the belle baby carrier. until my son was getting so heavy, that was my favorite one!

I'm barely over 5 feet (by about 1/2 inch) and while it sat a little low on my hips I could usually just pull it up a bit and tighten it down - I used mine all the time and loved it.
