Is It Teething?

Oh my I think I'm about to pull out my hair.

My 1.5 year old has regularly slept 12 hours at night for over a year now. Since 11 months he's taken one nap for 2-3 hours a day. For the last 2 weeks he has only napped for 30-45 minutes a day, waking up SCREAMING and crying. He goes down just fine but doesn't stay asleep long. He is still sleeping 12 hours at night without a peep. Here's my thoughts:
- He only had 4 teeth up until a week ago. He just cut one next to his top middle teeth and I believe the other one is on the way.
- He's bottom gums look real swollen.
- He sleeps just fine at night still.
- I've tried an earlier nap time, later nap time and Motrin before nap time.
- I've tried reading books to calm him down.
- He doesn't have a problem going to sleep, it's the staying asleep.

Could teething be lasting this long? Could he be getting several right in a row since he doesn't have many?

I usually let him cry at least 15 minutes before going in there. Once I go in, within minutes of trying to calm him down, he acts fine and wants to play. Is he pulling a fast one on me? I just don't know.

Any stories, advice out there?

What can I do next?

My son has grown all of his in fours! Front four, four molars, and now four incisors. It is a miserably slow process for everyone involved, since he is a crabby patty a lot of the time. For him, the orajel (adult strength) does the trick. He likes it so much that he tells me when he wants it and has been since he was about 14 months old. I leave it out on the dresser within sight but out of reach and he lets me know when he needs it. He never asks for it more than twice a day and it seemed to take the edge off so he can sleep properly. Good luck!

I bet it is teething. My daughter didn't get her first tooth until 13 mos but my son's only 6 mos and he's cutting his first.

Anyway, when she teethed her whole personality would change. I swear she'd go from being so sweet to acting possessed. I'd give her motrin and ORAGEL nightime formula. Its much stronger than just regular oragel. You can find it in the baby aisle at walmart or at CVS. Within minutes up applying that the possession would end and my sweet girl would reappear.
She too sleeps just like you child but teething definitely changed it unless we kept the pain under control. Some say that oragel can harden the gums so the tooth has a harder time getter thru. I think this is ridiculuos. I only used it when I saw her personality change from being in pain. It didn't prolong the teething. It provided her with relief.

Hope this helps. Good Luck.

I really sympathize with your situation. In my experience, my children only woke up crying when they had an ear infection, so maybe you should have his ears checked. Good luck to all of you!!

He could have an ear infection from the teething. The pressure in his ears will hurt him when he lays down causing him to be upset. Thats what happened to my son when he was teething around that time. Hope this helps!!!

Mother of 5 here...the last 2 twins...When the twin boys teethed we were in the hospital for excessive fevers and massive ear infections. Matt was in 21 times and Miles was in 12-often times together in the middle of the night with my then 12 yr old daughter helping me. Fevers were around 104/105. Yes, teething can be horrible. And as hard as they worked to get their teeth, we had to work as hard to get rid of them-many extractions between the 2 of them to get ready for the adult teeth.
