Is It Possible to Start Lactating Again?

Hi, my son is 3 weeks old and I was able to breast feed him for the first week. When we left the hospital on day 5,, he had lost a full pound and lactation suggested I supplement him with formula because he would not stay awake enough to nurse and he was weak from losing a full pound in 4 days. I never did get more than an ounce by pumping and after a while, he only wanted the bottle and not the breast. So, it has been 2 full weeks since I last breastfed him but I would really like to try again now that he has gained some weight and is healthy. Is it possible to restore lactation? what would I need to do? thanks!

What can I do next?

It is possible. I would recommend contacting both a lactation consultant (not the one that you were working with before, they did not seem to work to solve the problem) and your local La Leche League. Check out www.kellymom.com for more information.

Yes absolutely possible but it will take some commitment on your part. I agree - talk to a good lactation consultant ASAP and formulate a plan. It shouldn't take you more than 2-3 weeks to get back on track I would think, once you make the commitment to do it. If you're still pumping and getting some, this will help since you haven't completely stopped yet.

Yes you can. I did that with my middle child before I was a doula. Eat alot of oatmeal, get fenugeek at a healthfood store and also mothers milk tea. you might only need one or the other. And also, drink alot of water. It can happen. And nurse as much as you can and pump as much as you can too. It might take some time, but it will come back. It has not been that long and even after longer then that you can do it. Good luck.

YES!!!! Call me or your local La Leche League leader. I re-lactated with my son after a month of weaning, and I know other women who have done it successfully.

I can only echo what has been said.. you need to find a board certified lactation consultant who can help you achieve your goal... it is doable..

there are two parts,,, getting your son to latch on and suckle and building your supply.
