Little background on me. I am 37 years old. My mom had early menopause 45ish. My question is I don't know if I am having early menopause symptoms. My period came on Saturday and all day yesterday it was super heavy and clotty (sorry, I know that is super gross). I've never had a heavy flow so this is super strange to me. Could this be a sign of early menopause? I feel so stupid....I've been having my period for 20 years now...you think I would know.

What can I do next?

Your hormones start changing and you could to going into perimenopause. They say perimenopause can last something like 15 years! I'm 44 and have definitely been going through it for the last 4 years. My hormones are definitely changing and at times I feel like I'm going nuts mentally, I get got flashes all the time, etc. Peri-menopause is defined as the time prior to actual menopause. It is the time when women exhibit symptoms of their shifting hormonal landscape. Hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, irregular menstrual cycles, are all symptoms which indicate perimenopause. Fun fun. And how many more years to I have to go through this? Who knows. So, yes, you could be starting peri-menopause and your body is changing. It is normal for many women to start perimenopause in their mid to late 30s.

Not menopause, but perimenopause.. which can take years to go through..
the clots.. could be a sign of fibroids.. they are nonmalignant.. but will cause you to have a super heavy period which often is referred to as "flooding" because the way it seems to gush...... when you have fibroids.. they act as a block and when enough blood builds up.. it gushes past the fibroids... I know... that the nicest picture, but oh so true..
you should get checked for them... there is much literature on the net..
oh and 37 isn't too early to show signs of perimenopause... as mentioned, it can take years leading up to actual menopause..
and no, you aren't stupid... as women, I have found that we know less about how our body truly works than we think. we go through life, having a period and it's not until the period is upset in some way that we begin to really assess the inner workings of our body (men are the same)
it wasn't until I wanted a second child that I began to really understand what was going on in my body and then when I started having other issues (fibroids) is when I began to research even more so what was going on. the medical profession doesn't help much.. all they use are terms like your last period, midcycle... they knew really talk about what every stage of a period means... once I learned all about my hormones and at each stage................. WOW..... that is when I really began to understand that having a monthly cycle is so much more than bleeding...Once I started to understand hormones, fibroids and all that goes with it.. my life got a whole lot easier.... knowledge is power...
but it takes some reading and in my case, I chart my monthly cycle..

let me know if you have other questions. I've read up a lot on the cycle and fibroids..

good luck

Yeah, it could be Peri-menopause which is the time leading up to actual menopause. I am about to turn 45 and it's been 2 full years since I last had a period. For a couple years leading up to that my periods went absolutely crazy! I had my third at 38, almost 39 and after she was born they were absolutely unpredictable.
Peri-menopause can last for years in some women. It could also just be a one off fluke type thing. I would keep a small journal of your periods to see how things are going. If you are really worried you can always go in to get checked out.

It could be perimenopause, instead of early menopause. Perimenopause causes some changes in your cycle and period. I have early menopause (primary ovarian failure), and there's no mistaking it. Hot flashes, anxiety, and no period whatsoever. The only way to know is to have your hormones tested by the doctor.

It could be. It also could be a change in your body. If you feel uncomfortable about it, contact your doctor and have a good visit. Your body changes about every seven years so it could be just that. Have a great day.
