Is It a Rash or a Yeast Infection?

My six month old baby girl has a rash on her bottom that has created white filled blisters that turn to ulcer-like sores after they pop. I've being using diaper rash creams with zinc oxide, and balmex. I'm also trying to avoid extended periods of wetness and the baby wipes. She does not act as if it is itchy or painful. At one point it was looking better but seems to be flaring again. I am suspecting it could be a yeast infection since it began to show shortly after she had a round of antibiotics for an ear infection. Would appreciate any additional feedback. Thank you

So What Happened?

Thank you for your input. It turns out that it is MRSA--staph. She has been given treatment and is doing fine. Thanks again

My son gets rashes like that. I know he has had a yeast infection before, when he was a newborn, so that could very well be what it is. You can use a topical cream like Vagisil on it, or try California Baby Diaper Rash Cream. We bought it at Target and it has a yeast fighting ingredient in it too.

Good luck!

I agree with the others, that it could be a yeast infection. The big clue is that all the creams you are using are not clearing it up.

My kiddo gets really tricky rashes, especially if she poops overnight. When that happens and a rash flares up, I clean her up real well with a home-made diaper spray, dab dry with some TP at every diaper change.

I also will apply a thin layer of lotrimin AF, followed by another thin layer of vaseline to seal out the pee and poop. I only do this 1st thing in the am and last thing before bed. For the rest of the day, I do a thin layer of neosporin ointment and cover it with vaseline after I get her clean and dry. The rash usually clears up in 1-2 days.

I would try this if you haven't already, and if it's not almost all gone in two days I would definitely make an appt Monday to be seen just in case it's something else. If youre interested in my diaper spray recipe, pm me and I will send it to you. Good luck!

It very well could be a yeast infection, which you should treat with a topical antifungal cream like lotrimin. However, I will also tell you that it could be a form of staph infection. I had a niece and nephew (two different families) that both had it in their diaper area. For my girls, who have had yeast infections, they never turned to any puss filled blisters, but the staph infection does. It looked like big pimples honestly, and we were all kinda shocked to know that was the diagnosis, but it is very treatable, so I would encourage you to get it checked asap. Good luck ~A.~

Personally I would probably just take her in and let your pediatrician evaluate. If it is a yeast infection, will prob take a couple of days before you see a huge improvement, especially is she is having diarrhea from the antibiotics. If it is some kind of staph infection you will want to treat that ASAP, not a few days from now when you realize the antifungal cream is not working. My daughter had yeast infections and thrush with antibiotics all the time, but even with the worst case, I never saw white filled blisters in the diaper area... not saying it is not possible though. Good luck. Could even be impetigo or something.

Corn Starch is the most natural type of thing to put on diaper rashes of any kind. It will help to keep the area dry so that the rash can dry up and heal. Moisture, even with the creams, can cause it to be worse. My daughter had many types of rashes due to allergies and corn starch always seemed to be the easiest and fastest to heal.

My baby had a really bad diaper rash plus staph infection. Go to a doctor for this.

I would def. take her to the pedi asap--that can get really bad and turn into a staph infection or worse. My little one had very chubby folds in her legs and we battled yeast for her first six months. I had to use anti-yeast cream and a Rx from the doc. Keeping her dry is key--I had to even rinse her in the sink after every single change and blow dry her whole bottom, folds, etc. It eventually got better, but you have to have a routine.

Aww, well, all those creams, especially the zinc oxide, are much worse for her than what most people think. Personally, I would keep all chemicals away from her (creams, medications, even wipes unless they are thoroughly rinsed with plain water first).
You have to try "unpetroleum jelly." It works sort of like vasoline but is not harmful like vasoline and mineral oils are. It will provide a protective barrier and room to heal. Then follow up with coconut oil (sold in cooking oil sections at Natural Grocers, Whole Foods, Market Street, etc). Coconut oil is antifungal, antibacterial, antimicrobial, AND antioxidant.
You have to try it!
But please, no more zinc oxide and other diaper creams- they are MUCH more harmful than people know.
I hope she get better soon, poor little thing.
Also, probiotics after antibiotics is something you might want to look into.
And give her as much air time (no diaper) as possible. The skin has an incredible ability to heal itself, just give her air and keep her away from medications.

I would bring her to the doctor for a diagnosis since there are ulcer-like sores. I have not seen that in a yeast infection before. However, if it is a yeast infection and you want to try a more natural treatment you could give her acidopholus (a probiotic). You might ask your doctor about the best way to administer it. I know some women who are still nursing will rub some on their nipple so the baby sucks it off. If you use bottles you could put some in her bottle. Or, if she has started on some solids you could mix some in with her cereal. That might be the easiest. Talk to your doctor about dosage amounts, but I think it's really hard to give too much acidopholus.

Sounds like a yeast infection. My pedi told me I could get a prescription for anti-fungal or just buy an over-the-counter yeast cream (like a woman would buy for vaginal yeast infection). Cleared it right up. If you called and talked to the nurse, they might be able to tell you what brand to buy without having to take her in.

Different rashes respond to different things. I try A&D Ointment a few times, then Neosporin (surprisingly), then Lotriman. Usually one of those work. If not, we go to the doctor. Good luck!

I just had the same type of theing with my son. Look for a anti-fungal cream with the active ingredient clotrimazole. Walmart has an equate brand that works just as well as the name brands. Just check for the ingredient.

I would put some yeast cream on it and see if it helps. I would also dab antibiotic on any sore spots and monitor them closely. If no improvement in a day or so to sore spots, I would think infection like Amber said or depending on just how bad they looked, call the dr and ask.

The best thing for diaper rash and to also tell if it is diaper rash is, air. If you have the time, simply leave her undiapered and the air will actually clear diaper rash up pretty quickly.

If it doesn't, and it isn't some other sort of rash either from being sick...and also causes bumps, it is yeast. If it is yeast, you will see improvement through out the day using any yeast cream.

I personally would always want to treat sore spots with antibiotic, even before you talk to the dr.

Also, sometimes the diaper itself can be the culprit for a rash if your baby developes and allergy to something in it. I would do all of the above and change to a different brand temporarily.
