Is It a Milk Allergy???

Hi Moms~
My daughter just turned 1 the end of February. She has pretty much self-weaned herself from breastfeeding, which made the process much easier on the both of us. I gradually started introducing her to whole milk and every time she had it, she came out with a rash on her crotch. I have instead given her Rice Dream Rice Drink. She does fine with that, but nobody else in our family drinks it, so for that reason I'd really like to eventually get her into drinking regular milk. I'm not sure if this is an allergy of some sorts or if I am introducing too much too fast and it is just her way of reacting to the changes.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
~J.~

I had the same problem with my 15 month old daughter. The GI told us to stay on soy for a while, which she is still on. She can tolerate other diary just not the whole milk, which is odd cuz she always had the regular similac as a baby. I would try soy and after a few month you can slowly switch her back to whole and see what happens. We did that and my daughter got the rash again, so its back to soy, the GI rec. at least 3 mmonth on soy before trying whole milk again. Sometimes their digestive system isnt mature enough for whole milk at 1yr but that doesnt mean she wont be able to eventually be on regular milk.

i'd stick w/rice milk. My son is the only person who drinks it. It lasts MONTHS in the closet so if you go to trader joes or some place you can stock up and they have their own store brand... granted its still 4x cost of cow milk but at least she won't be in pain!

It's probably a milk allergy. You should probably hold off on giving her cow's milk to drink for awhile. Does she tolerate other dairy products well? There are differing school's of thought about how to handle this. Some would say avoid all dairy and she will probably outgrow the allergy. Personally, based on my experience, I'd have her avoid the foods she reacts to (ie: cow's milk), but if she doesn't react to cheese or yogurt made from cow's milk, it's probably ok to give it to her.

Hi J.,

Perhaps a lactose intolerance?

I had problems with my son drinking milk - he tolerates the yogurt and cheese, but drinking 8 oz. of milk would send him into hysterics with gas pain, diarrhea and eventually threw up but i'm not sure if that was the milk or him crying...

as a baby, I had him on soy formula because milk based made him behave colicky - he also had acid reflux we found out later, but the doc said keep him on soy - if its not broken, dont fix it.

the only thing he drinks now is Lactaid WHOLE. My concern with feeding the rice milk is that it may not have the fat that they need right now - and my last bit of research for a soy/rice based milk to use with my boy showed the fat content was significantly lower than what he should have. we tried the lactaid and he does great now... we are trying to mix it with regular whole to gradually introduce the lactose, until he can tolerate it better...

ask your ped. if the rice milk is ok to use... 2.5 grams of fat in 8 ounces of rice milk, compared to 8 grams in the same whole cows milk. the difference is significant enough to possibly be a problem.
