Is It a Boy or Girl?

First off, I'm pregnant and due at the end of May. At my last appt. the baby's heartbeat was 166, and the doctor laughingly said that if we were counting at home, we could guess it was a girl, but medically it didn't really mean anything. I've heard tons of wives tales on how to guess if you're having a boy or girl. I'm just curious to hear from other mothers what crazy ways they determined what they were having. I'm still not sure that I want to know when I go for my ultrasound, but my hubby and I are having humorous debates over it. I have had several crazy "pregnant" dreams about the baby, but have had both boy and girl dreams and even one that was twins. lol. Anyways, what did you do to guess what gender the baby was?

What can I do next?

Old wives tale, but true for me...my son was lower and up and down. My daughter was higher and laid across. It was funny because I went into a Chinese bakery and the older woman working there looked at me and said, "Oh...you're having a girl!" I hadn't found out what it was at that point. I asked her why she thought so and she said because I was carrying her across. She was right! Plus, it will sound a little nuts, but I knew what they were for whatever reason. I referred to my son as "him" before I knew and my daughter as "her." Lucky guess? Probably.

Ok...this works almost all the time. Instinctively if asked which you prefer a boy or girl... and don't give the answer you don't care as long as its healthy b/c we all want a healthy baby but if you could choose boy or girl.. right now.. which do you prefer..? ok... now you WILL have the opposite...lol Are you big all over? or just in front... I have noticed that if you have gained like crazy alll over and have become much wider than its a boy.. if mainly just in front and not much else then I would say girl. Its funny I used to work as an admitting clerk in radiology where they did tons of ultrasounds I was like 19 for 22 on guessing what the sex was of the baby. :)

The chinese calendar and the Draino pee test has worked for evryone I know. You have to use crystal Draino and dump urine on it and one color means a girl and a different means a girl. I can't remember the colors or the exact instructions? (I would google search it to see if you can find it. I know it used to be on the Bob and Tom website.) I would suggest to do the test outside because it smells really bad once mixed together!! I am not sure how true wive tales are but they are fun to try!

Ihad this done to me while I was pregnate, and te funny thing was that both times I seen it done and on myself, it worked. But if you put your wedding rings on a string and hold it above your stomach. If it goes in circles above it is a girl, if it goes bak and forth it is a boy. Pretty cool and fun.

I have twin daughters, now nine years old. My husband and I decided not to find out the gender in advance... but we had fun guessing. Because Twin B had a heartrate that was 10 beats per minute faster than Twin A, and B kept kicking A during the ultrasounds we saw, I jokingly guessed that A was a girl and B a boy. Though Rachel (B) had little to no hair until she was 5, she was definitely a female, as was her sister Emily. So the "old wives' tales" are not always too correct. (By the way, I did dream we were having twins... in the dream, it was a boy and girl. And the week before our first ultrasound, the doctor was surprised that I asked... he said that based on my measurements and the single heartbeat we heard, I was NOT having twins. He ate his words a week later.)

I've always heard that if you are carrying high it is a boy and low its a girl, but when I was pregnant with my second child I came across a lady in Target and she guessed I was having a boy, due to the fact that when she looked at me from behind she couldn't tell I was pregnant. She said if it was a girl you tend to bliw up all the way around, and boys are typically all out front, needless to say she was right. Have fun and as long as you are ready for either one it will be a wonderful surprise. Congratualations and enjoy your little blessing

I have three boys and I dont exactly remember what the heartbeat was but it was high. And when I went in for my ultrasound it sounded the same speed. The first few times it was 146 and then the last time it was 168 - this time it is a girl and people I talked to had sworn it was going to be a girl because of the heartbeat but I am not sure that I would have beleived that without seeing it on the ultrasound.
Good luck on your child - I am also due in May!!

Not one gender prediction test/old wives tale was correct when I was pregnant with my daughter. I am due in June and I haven't even tried any of them because I know they are so unreliable that I don't even consider them fun. I get my ultrasound on Wednesday, so I don't have to wonder much longer.

off topic: in your About Me section, it says your due in May '10. Might want to fix that. :)

All my best!

We didn't find out, so many people told me that if you only have a big belly going forward (you don't look pregnant from behind) its a boy, and if you are round all around, its a girl; I was round all over and it was a boy,so it didn't work.
What did work and I kind of have notice with many friends, if you look really pretty its a boy, because its said that girls suck the beauty out of mom during pregnancy.
But in any case, its always a 50/50 chance.
Good luck and congratulations.

I'm sure you will get lots of responses to this, and while I don't believe the wives' tales are true, I did notice a couple of things between my pregnancies with my boys and girls. My last pregnancy was twins girls, and I noticed I had a much higher taste preference to sweets (anything - fruits, drinks, etc), my left breast was bigger than my right (another wives' tale) and my skin was much more prone to break outs with my girls. My skin cleared up so nicely with my sons' pregnancies.

Here is a web page you might like to read:

I hope things go well for you - enjoy the blessing of another baby! (Of course after my 2 boys, I had twins girls......who know what you might end up with :)......)

Some statistics are showing an actual increase of female children being born.

We never really guessed, but my husband did joke that he had a feeling that he would end up in a house of women. We have one girl as of now. Who knows what the future holds.

Hi L., We did find out at 20 weeks that we were having a boy, but before that time, I was really curious. A friend from church told us about the "chinese calendar." Basically, you take your age at the time you conceived and add that number to the number of the month you conceived. If the two numbers equal an odd number, you're having a boy. If they equal an even number, then it's a girl. Mine was right 28 + 7 (July conception) so we had 35 and a boy! We did it with several friends and family members and it was about 90% accurate. As a former scientist, I can still vouch it's a 50/50 chance no matter what, but it's still fun to try these things out and see if they're right. Good luck! A.

I have seen it all in my life time. Holding a pendant over your stomache while laying down if it moves left it is a boy, right it is a girl. A drop of urine on a piece of lismus paper and if it turns red or pink it is a girl, blue or green it is a boy. Going to a physic, on and on.
I didn't want to know but when I came home and told my husband I was pregnant he calmly announced, "I will now have my daughter". When I came home and told him I was pregnant the second time he smiled and said, "Now we will have our son". He was right both times.
If you aren't sure you want to know why all this interest in how to determine the sex before the ultrasound? I admit sometimes the ultrsounds aren't foul proof, the baby may be in the wrong position to let you see anyway. Just curious.

They just did an episode of The Doctors about this very topic, and basically they said none of the old wives tales were true. There is no way to tell what you are having except to see on an ultrasound. If you are not sure you want to know the sex, at the next ultrasound if the doctor can tell have him write it down and put it in an enevolpe and take it home. Then if you change your mind and want to know just open the envelope. My friend did this and they never did open the envelope and found out the day the baby was born that it was a boy. Good luck!

L., This worked for mine. I had 3 miscarriages so not sure on those but it said Boy, Girl, Girl, & With the 2 I HAVE NOW it was right on. OK you get a sewing needle and put string through it and put the needle end into a SHARP pencil eraser. Make sure the tip of pencil is pointy OK then you put it over your wrist and it if goes side to side it is a boy if it goes in a circle it is a girl BUT if it does one and does NOT STOP just slows down a little and does another one it is twins of whichever way it goes. Hope this all makes since. It will do one way and you will see it stop and then do another one. It is crazy but everyone I have done this with or told it has been right each time. You have to hold the hand holding the needle over wrist very still as well as your wrist. If anyone does it let me know if it is right with you. IF I had not gotten my tubes ties our next 1 would b a girl my hubby wanted me to get untied HECK NO 2 is enough I have my boy and girl I am happy lol.....Good Luck OH we wanted to know so we could be ready and not have to take gifts back to exchange for the sex we did have.

I always dreamed of twin girls. Twins run in my Dad's family but I wound up with 2 misscarrages and 2 full terms births that were boys. I guess my girls didn't make it. They always told me it was how you carry nd walk while preganant. I carried high which was suppose to be a girl but walked like I was carring a boy. They thought my youngest was a girl the dr delivered 3 to 1 girls. What that had to do with it I don't know. Plus the heart beat was very fast for him. Also he was very shy and had everything covered durng the sonogram.

My husband and I found out the gender of our children by the ultra sounds. Our last child though didn't want to cooperate though so we had to guess. We guessed a boy and we were right. His heartbeat was slower at one appointment than at the next which made the doctor think that it was possible we were having a girl, but you can't determine by the heartbeat. That is an old wives tale. If you don't want to find out for sure then make sure you buy neutral colors for the baby. Good luck!

We didn't find out either, but I should have known that I was having a girl because I wore a ton of pink while I was pregnant (prior to that I didn't even OWN anything pink, just a lot of black). At first we did think it was a boy, but when went to our first birthing class, the instructor asked and we said we guessed boy and she just looked at my belly, shook her head, then asked the next person.

I heard that once you have had two children of the same sex (two boys) your chances of having another of that same sex are much higher than having one of the other sex. I know alot of people with 3 girls or 3 boys, and I hae three girls...the only way to know for sure is the ultra sound or an amnio.

I read somewhere that more boys are born during a good economy and more girls during a bad economy. I don't know if that's true or not, but I found it interesting if nothing else. The chinese calendar was off for both of my first two pregnancies, saying boy. The heartbeat predictor was more correct for me than anything. I've heard cravings can be a clue also. I craved fruit for my first and to a lesser degree with my second which are both girls.I had a feeling with both of them they were girls even though everyone thought the second would be a boy! My sister was sure she was having a boy and craved pastas and meats and had a boy. I'm pregnant again and haven't had any specific cravings so we shall see! Good luck and have fun!

I didn't want to know with any of ours. The first two were easy, but the third was very hard to buy gender neutal for. We have 3 girls. My husband says that it's God's joke on him! The ultasound tech told us that more people are waiting to find out the old fashioned way. I always thought that it was more fun that way, it really gave me something to look forward to during labor. The curiosity made it a little easier to bear. Good luck.

It's so much fun trying to figure out what you're having! The chinese birth chart was right twice for me and wrong once. When asked what I thought I was having, I was always right. Just a feeling, I guess. I felt a little sicker with my 6yr. old - girl. Not a huge amount, but a little more. Now, I am 28 weeks pregnant right now and I knew it was a girl because I was REALLY sick! I know more people who got sicker with girls than boys, however that's not fool-proof. We decided to find out what we were having because the older kids can "bond" with baby. The kids can now put a name with the mystical thing making my belly big. They call her by name and it seems like she's already part of the the family. Plus, I could never wait to see what the baby was at the birth. HUGE kudos to those who are patient enough to wait. I couldn't - wish I could have, cuz that would be pretty cool to have the doctor/midwife announce it to you. However, one thing I have yet to hear was wrong was the Drano test. It was right for all of mine (so far) and for several friends of mine, also. Have fun with your pregnancy and good luck!

The wives tales are just so crazy, aren't they? When I was pregnant I had bad heartburn, and someone told me that meant my baby would be born with a lot of hair. Well, that didn't turn out to be the case. I did have cranial sacral therapy when I was pregnant, though, and the therapist "saw" a girl with blond hair and said that my baby was very happy to be with me. I did have a blond girl. I always intuitively felt I would have a girl, and I was very drawn to the color pink while pregnant. It just seemed to stand out brightly to me against the winter grey. I also had bad morning sickness, and some people believe that it is worse with girls, because you have the extra estrogen in your system. Don't know if there is any medical validity to that. Well, congratulations on your baby, whatever you are having!
