Is He Getting His Molars?

My son has been a good sleeper, from 7:30pm to 6:30am. For the last few weeks every other night or so he will wake between 11:30 pm and 1:30 am screaming, scratching his head and pulling his ear. I nurse a little and give tylenol or motrin and he then goes back to sleep but then wakes again around 5 am screaming and we try to let him cry but then he just is awake for the morning. I am so irritable and upset with the lack of sleep now. Not sure what to do?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Went to the doctor today and thank goodness NO ear infection he is just getting his molars. One is starting to come through and the others are all swollen so they will be here soon. I just keep telling myself this will pass in time and he will be fine. Thanks everyone.

I have a 13 month old son as well. He has been teething too. Not needed medicine yet, but the lack of sleep stinks. Ice helps. and just generally chewing on stuff. A cold cheese stick is good nutritionally and feels good to him too.

You might want to have him checked for an ear infection.

Well, yes, he may be getting molars (my son had both sets in by 15 months) but I would take him in and get his ears checked.

Ear infections can hurt badly while they sleep (even if they don't seem to bothe them when awake) because of the pressure when they lay down. Also, if he IS getting molars, that's going to make the ear stuff feel worse. My on actually burst his non-infected eardrum around that age because of the combination of infection in the other ear, teeth, and crying.

Good luck.

If he's tugging at his ears, I would take him to the pedi to see if he's not starting an ear infection. they can be just fine during the day, but the nighttime comes and the pain comes along with it.

Have you had his ears checked? It sounds first like an ear infection and than second it could be teeth, do you see anything?

good luck, my 15 mth old has slept thru the night only a handful of times, so I know what you're going thru.

If he is pulling at his ear it, he may have an ear infection. You might want to call you Dr's office.

If he's tugging at both ears it's probably not an ear infection. They usually only affect one ear at a time. But, you could take him in to be checked. Hold him upside down so he'll laugh and take a look in there for swelling. It's probably teething.

My 18-mo son is a good sleeper as well, but there was a week or so (at 16 mo) when he would get up crying inconsolably anywhere between 11:30pm-1:30am. He wouldn't go back to sleep and we'd end up holding or rocking him for the rest of the night. We got worried when he stopped eating (probably because he was so sleep-deprived and irritable). Two days later, I found his molars had grown in, and he was back to his normal self, sleeping well and eating again. This surprised me greatly, since he didn't fuss much when his first four top/bottom teeth came in. It happened again when his bottom molars came out a few weeks later. But if he's tugging at his ears, I would get him checked out for an ear infection just to be safe. Hope this helps.
