My 4 year old wants to see Iron Man 2 with his dad but im not sure thats appropriate for his age. Its PG13, so im thinking it may be over his head or have sexual inuendos. Anyone seen it? Would you let your 4 year old see it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I decided against Iron Man for my son. Im fine with telling him no, its my husband who is more lenient and more likely to think its ok for him to see movies like this. But we discussed it and agreed it would not be appropriate at 4 years old and maybe not even when he is 13, but we'll talk about it again at that age.
Thanks for all the responses, it was a great help.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! He should be home watching Handy Mandy or Diego. Don't allow him to see things meant for older people (PG 13), there are guidelines for a reason. You are the parent, it should not matter that he "wants" to see it. I did see it, and would never, ever consider taking anyone close to 4 to see it. Childhood should be full of innocence, not destruction and violence. Be the parent.

absolutely not.
it's PG-13 for a reason .Violance, dead bodies, smoking , drinking, sexual innuendo and lots of scantily clad women and bad language.

Our son is almost 4, and we have already told him he won't be seeing the movie because it has some scary parts we think would be too much for him.

My husband has seen the first movie and made the decision that it wasn't appropriate. We don't shelter our kids, but our son pays really close attention to everything and has an amazing memory. He doesn't understand the difference between fiction and reality, and he's already afraid of the dark. We don't need anything to make staying in his bed any more difficult.

So, no, I personally don't believe it's appropriate for those ages no matter how much it's being marketed through Happy Meals, Pepsico, etc.

I saw the movie and it is quite violent.

We have an 8-year old and her dad and mom have been taking her to see PG 13 (and even some R) movies for a long time. At age 4 she saw Chucky! At age 7 she saw The Grudge!

She doesn't have nightmares, these movies don't seem to bother her. In fact, she'll often say "oh, it's just a movie." So it SEEMED like she was okay with seeing PG-13 and R movies.

Well, until recently. You see, these movies were going over her head. WAAAAY over her head. So much in fact that she wasn't even seeing it as a movie, just a bunch of action scenes. And she was so convinced that it wasn't "real" that things in movies that ARE real she refused to believe existed. She would watch the movie, not understand it and say she loved it (because that's what adults expected her to say). And she was carrying that over into school, reading etc. She got VERY GOOD at pretending to understand things. So much so that she fooled all her teachers.

Just recently a lightbulb went off in her head and she's been eager to understand things. She can't even understand SIMPLE MOVIES for kids younger than her. If you ask her specific questions, she has NO IDEA what's going on. But boy can she pretend! And now that she's getting an UNDERSTANDING of movies, she's quite horrified at what she's seeing. Movies that she saw dozens of times she now understands and doesn't like because she now knows what's going on.

What I'm trying to say is that just because your kid doesn't seem scared doesn't mean that you should show them the movies. They have ratings for a reason. The damage isn't always just being scared, but could be the opposite which is a complete lack of understanding, or they could make up their own reasons for things they don't understand. That's just as damaging.

NoooOOOOOooooOOOOOOooooo!!!!! Seriously, no. He's 4. Of course he loves superheros and will want to see anything with a superhero name in the title. And, if he saw it he may totally love it. SO WHAT?!?!? There's lots of things kids love that we wisely don't let them do. My kid would play WII 24/7 and eat nothing but fruit chews if I left it up to him. Be as cautious about what you feed their brain as the food they eat.

I would get a cartoon version of Iron Man that's rated G or even the Y7 and watch that. He has plenty of time to grow up and watch pg-13 movies. You can't erase those images once he's seen them.

It seems the other moms are telling you "no", but I really think it depends on your family and the kiddo himself. I have already taken my kids to see it. When the first one came out I took my then 6 year old girls to see it...twice.

One of my daughters absolutely loves super hereos. We also went to go see Spiderman III its opening weekend and she was 5 then. My other daughter is a bit different. She enjoys all the action, but will cover her own eyes when she thinks it's getting too scarry. In fact, she just covered her eyes recently when we were watching the Superman movies from the 80's the other day. I know for a fact that my mom took me to go see Superman in the theater when I was only 4 (and I remember thinking it was awesome).

So yes, the movie says PG-13, but remember that means parental guidance suggested for kids under 13. You are his parent. You decide if he's old enough to know it's all make believe.

I actually think I may take my 4 year old. He really wants to see it, and if you look at Geek Dad's website (google it) he gives a review that leads me to think there's no reason for a 4 year old NOT to see it if they're a mature 4. I read another blog that had this for a topic yesterday, and everyone who had already taken kids ranging from age 5-11 thought it was great, the kids thought it was great and no one understood why Geek Dad thought you shouldn't take young children (maybe he was referring to toddlers who don't belong in movies period that aren't cartoons -but that's another topic). Evidently there's what would be considered regular and normal violence for Marvel comics and Scarlett Johansen is dolled up in a leather catsuit at some point. So what? It IS long -a few minutes over 2 hours, so take that into account. You know your kid and if he can handle that length. The great thing about sexual innuendos is that 4 year olds don't get them! Sexual innuendo exists in many animated kid's films so the adults don't get bored.

The MPAA rates things in very odd ways. Small little things like one scene containing a cigarette can get a PG-13 rating. One F word gets a PG-13 rating, etc. Also, according to the people on yesterday's blog, Iron Man 2 is FAR less gorey (in fact there's no gore according to many) and violent than Iron Man 1 was.

There's a REASON why it has been rated PG-13...because it is not appropriate for children under the age of 13! Kids pick up more than you think they do.

I won't let my 8 year old see it. I really enjoy these movies but they are NOT for children. Let me give you an example of some dialogue "She's doing a spread on me in this month's Vanity Fair", "well she did quite a spread on Tony last year", "Yeah, and she wrote an article too"...heavy sexual inuendo - Tony Stark is a big-time playboy, not to mention the movie is graphically violent. This is not something that a 4 year old needs to see, whether they scare him or not - I am always shocked when my husband and I go to these movies and see such young children - let them be little while they are - they can see it on DVD when they're old enough.

If it's PG-13, then the people seeing it should be at least semi close to that age. I think 4 is WAY too young! My son is about the same age and we still get a little nervous letting him watch certain PG movies that we haven't seen before (and we are not overprotective parents). I suggest waiting until your son is at least 11 until he starts watching any sort of PG-13 rated movie.

however. i know plenty of mom's that would, and have them watch scooby doo and star wars and all other kids of scarey violent things so i'm sure i'm out numbered.

I even knew one family that let their 4 yr old watch freddie cruger movies.

and we wonder where the increase and desensitization of violence comes from.

My 4 year old is dying to see this! We had to squash the grandparents from taking him. He's seen some of the first Iron Man but we think that may be a little too much for him so definitely don't want to take him without seeing it first.

It's so hard because the toys and everything are sooo cool and puts parents in a tough spot. Our son did see the G.I. Joe movie with his pop-pop and loved it and for our son it depends how fantastic something is as to whether or not it scares him. The closer to real life the scarier it is. I would hold off until you see it and determine if it's a good fit for your son.

I haven't seen it, but based on the first Iron Man movie, I'm certainly not taking my 6 year old to see it!

Now, let me say upfront that I err on the side of caution on what I allow my daughter to see. I held off on Wizard of Oz until my daughter just turned 6! LOL! So, my answer would definitely be a "No!" The first Iron Man was extremely violent. I think the sexual innuendo is the least of its problems! Generally, I'm not allowing my daughter to see anything that is PG-13 until she is 13 (or pretty close to it).

Just my opinion!
