iPod Touch vs Kindle Fire for My Son

So we would like to get an iPad for my son, however can't justify spending $400+ for him. So we decided to get an iPod touch instead, because I love all the apps (learning and games) for him and he loves my iPhone. We are also getting the iPad 3 so I like that we will be able to share apps with iCloud on the iPod Touch. But now I see that the Kindle Fire is the same price, but I know NOTHING about them. So are there learning apps? He's 4.5. So I am interested in writing and reading, math, etc.
And please spare me the lecture on getting a 4 yo one of these. Thanks.

What can I do next?

My 5YO LOVES my Kindle Fire. Both for apps (Angry Birds, anyone?) and reading (there are some children's books starting to be out there for the Kindle). My husband got it for me for Christmas, and I wasn't too keen on it at first, but it is the most reliable "babysitter" I've got going.....

My grand kids that are 3 and 4 got Kindle Fires for Christmas and love them.

I would however go with compatible stuff for your phones since you may want to sync them at some point if you ever use it to go online.

iPod touch without a doubt....and if your child was 2yo...and you wanted to buy him an iPod Touch....that is your business...nobody elses.

I don't have anything made by Apple but my kids love my Nook (the Barnes and Noble version of Kindle). My kids are 3 and 6 and both love it. I am surprised at how well my 3 year old does. She can't do well at all the older kids and adult games but she plays some games (there are tons for preschoolers) and loves to have books read to her.

Since you will be getting the iPad, you will really like the iCloud feature & not paying twice for apps. Also you can do "Find my iPhone, iPad, iPod" among all 3, which is handy.
I'd get the iPod for him. My son loves his (he loves the iPad MORE, but....).

I got an Ipod touch for my 6 year old for christmas - best present ever. Music, movies, fun games, educational games, camera, etc. My only regret is that I didn't have the money to get(or the ability to justify) the 4 year old and 2 year old one. It's just so versatile.

We just had to make this decision. I have friends that have the Kindle Fire and their kids love it, but we went with the iPod Touch and have not regretted it for a second! I got it on amazon for $180, last time I looked they were up to $187. It was worth every penny- great for amusing the kids at the doctor's office, grocery shopping, etc...and a million times easier than keeping track of the DS and all the teeny, tiny games that go with it. We'll probably end up with a couple more eventually (we have four kids and they rotate my phone and the iPod when we're out- sometimes they're not that great at sharing!).

I'd stick with apple since you have the phone already. You can share your apps with sync.

You could find an iPad 1 (maybe 2) on Craigslist-base model-16 gb wifi- for around 200. We just sold ours on CL and most seem to be similarly priced. You can also contact apple for info on refurbished models.
We are getting the 3 as well and plan to give our 3 boys the other old one (5, 4 and 2). They do not and will not have video game systems until they are older, and we love the educational apps while exposing them to some form of technology. Happy shopping!

We have the Kindle and it has very few of the kid apps that we have on our iPhone or iPad. We just use the kindle for cartoons on flights and at Grandma's house. :(
