I had sent the email below and have gotten some great ideas. I guess the next question I have is: what does one do FIRST? Do you get a patent? A patent attorney? Someone to make a prototype then a patent? I just don't know where to begin. Thanks for all of the advice and weblinks so far!

Ok, so I have this AMAZINGLY wonderful idea for a child product. I have had the thought in my mind for over 5 years. I KNOW this product will be huge...however, I have NO IDEA how to get it 'out there'. I have checked in to the 'invention submission' stuff, but they want you to give them your idea and then they will do a search to see if that idea is already out there....I am very skeptical about that b/c then they can just steal your idea..right? Anyway, if anyone has any ideas for me I would LOVE IT! It is an idea that could be sold to a big children supplier too....but I would like to just do it myself. So please give me some feedback on where to start. Thanks!

What can I do next?

email me this weekend and I will give you the website to research it yourself to see if someone has a patent on the same idea. Then it will cost $100 to do the actual patent. Then you should probably DBA your name you want for business. A very good friend is a patent atty in CA and is helping me get my idea out there also. Don't give up because you could be a millionaire with the right idea and the persistance.

just email me to remind me and I will contact my friend and ask him for the website. I DBA'd my name thru LEGALZOOM. It was fast and easy.

I would try to get a hold of the Boppy Company. They are a Colorado company based out of Golden. They might be able to direct you.

Make sure you look into getting a lawyer before you start the process. They will be able to tell you if someone is taking advantage of you, also your legal rights!

You have to apply first for a patent. That protects your invention from copywriting or someone stealing it. Once that is done then you need to get protypes built and take it to where you think there would be a market of it, or take it to a larger manufacturer that can do quantity in production of it for you. First and foremost get it patented! That is through the govt and there has to be something on the internet about this.

Depending on what you need to get your idea into a marketable product you might also need to find a company that can make a mock-up of your product so that you can see if it really works like you think it will or just need to refine it so that it will look really sleek and professional. If you've ever watched the show "American Inventor" they go over a lot of the steps that are an absolute must to get a product fully refined and well marketed.

For a company to make a preproduction version of your product you can look up "model makers" online and that should give you a few different companies to choose from. And Don't forget about a really good logo, it's the symbol of your company and usually the first impression along with the name that people have of your company and product. I can tell you about a few companies and freelancers that are really good if you get to that point. Just send me a message through here and I'll give you a list.
