how old is he?
if he is 6 months and older then yes you may start. there really isn't any order. if you do gerber jar foods, start with stage 1, they have peas, carrots, and different fruit. he may like some and reject some. try one food at a time so you'll watch out for allergies. i think the rule of thumb is introduce one new food/taste for a week while watching for signs of allergies. i started with peas stage 1, then sweet potatoes, then carrots, then squash, then the fruit, peaches, apples etc
once he accepts one food for example peas, then when you introduce the second, keep giving the first as well and so on. around 7 and a half months i started giving stage 2. there wasn't much of a difference just a little thicker mushier food. same thing with the rice cereal, little by little you'll start making thicker texture. also, except rice cereal there's oatmeal etc. my kids liked the oatmeal better because rice cereal made them pretty constipated.
let me know if you have any questions'good luck

ps if you prefer to make the food yourself, i recommend super baby foods book. it's awesome. the author went for all organic healthy foods. i made the ones i thought were good without necessarily eliminating the meats as she preferred. so just take and make whatever you want your child to eat

My pediatrician followed the Gerber diet. I think if you go to their website they'll list everything on there. But we started with rice cereal. We then started with fruits, I think they can go in any order, but we did bananas, apples, peaches, pears. We then moved onto vegetables, our pediatrician had us start with the yellow/orange veggies first...squash, sweet potatoes. We then moved to peas & green beans. In between starting each item you want to wait about 3-5 days. You can keep feeding the rice cereal and that one fruit, but stick to it for that amount of time, you want to make sure they're not allergic to it before you start the next one. After we tried all of that stuff we moved onto more fun things like the baby desserts in jars and stuff like that. have fun & good luck, it's fun at that time!

My daughters pediatrician said yellow and orange vegies first. You do one every 3-5 days. Then green vegies then fruits. Just make sure you only do the one at a time that way you'll know if he has an allergic reaction what it's from.

It's not really important as to which ones you begin with. You want to choose single food options and remember to wait a couple days and watch for any reaction in between new foods. Some people say to start with the less sweet choices so that they don't expect the sweet fruit every time and others say to start with the sweet fruits to get them excited about starting foods. It doesn't really matter though.

the american academy of pediatrics recommends babies should not start solids until 6 months.

i started my baby with avocados, then fruits. he definitely has a sweet tooth. if i could do it over again i would have introduced veggies before fruits.

FYI cereal tends to make babies constipated.

i found the book SUPER BABY FOOD by Ruth Yaron very helpful.
