Intracapsular Tonsillectomy

We are taking our 7 year old daughter to an ENT doctor that we trust, so I know we will follow his instructions. What I'm asking is if anyone has an experience with the new type of tonsillectomy called "Intracapsular?" We're trying to correct a night time snoring issue (We didn't know it was snoring we just thought she slept deeply. But our dentist says her airway is blocked.)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for everyone who shared, the visit went well. Currently no surgery is necessary. I absolutely would recommend Dr. Greg Rohn at Southwest ENT to anyone, young or young at heart. http://www.swent.com/ The x-ray should reveal if there is an issue with her adenoids, but likely we'll just try some allergy medicine to see if that clears up the problem. So she might get out of this without surgery at all. I love finding a doctor who has the skill to cut if it's necessary, but the knowledge to know when it's not.

I don't know about the intracapsular tonsillectomy, but I can tell you that we are so glad that we had our son's tonsils out. Having said that, it was a pretty terrible two weeks or so after the surgery. If it is supposed to be easier recovery, I would really look into it as it is another method of removing the tonsils.

Hi S.,

I never heard of an Intracapsular; but just last month my 3 year old had her enlarged tonsils and adenoids removed. Now that she;s had the surgery, she can breathe better (adenoids had grown into her nose passage), doesn't suffer with sinus infections anymore and doesn't snore anymore either. She recovered very quickly, quicker than most kids. She was herself in a matter of 2 1/2 days. She only complained of a little ear pain every now and then. Other than that, she's been GREAT.

Good Luck

S.

I do not know about intracapsular surgery but I do know that any tyope of throat surgery is very painful. I also have quite a bit of knowledge about apnea and nightitme snoring issues. There is a lot of information available both on line and in the libraries. One of the best is the Mayo Clinic site. doing a few simple searches there can give one a tremendous education.

From personal experience: surgeons first line of solution to any problem is usually surgery - that is what they do. Please please please exhaust every other avenue before you decide. Nothing wrong with surgery when necessary but so often it is like using a cast when a band-aid would do the job.

If it is necessary, bless her heart and throat already. Make sure you get to speak directly with the anesthesiologist and understand what the after effects and potential longer term issues may be from being put under.

Blessings and prayers are yours.

You can goggle it and from just a quick over view it shaves off parts of the tonils and is supposed to have less bleeding. Get a second opion though I would hate for your little girl to have to go through a second surgery if they don't remove everything that needs to be removed.

I'm so glad you posted this. Our son might be facing a tonsillectomy in the next month or so. He's 4 and I hadn't heard of the intracapsular version. We have a consult with our ENT in 1 week and I'm definitely going to ask him about this. With a recovery period of only 2.5 days, this would be so much easier to handle than the old version of 7 to 10 days. I'm hoping that someone who has had this done will post and let us know how it goes.

Hi S.,

I'm interested to find out who you doctor is. My daughter had her adenoids removed and sinus drained and it didn't work for her...constant sinus infections...it is not that we feel the doctor did a bad job per say just looking for a different doctor with maybe a different perspective.

I would greatly appreciate it if you would respond back with his name.

Thanks!
D.
