We are taking my son to Mexico with all the grandparents, cousins, and extended family and meeting at a condo in September, and he will be 9 months old. My son is a great traveler and has flown successfully many times already. My question is does he need a passport? I know passengers in and out of Mexico and Canada must have a passport now, birth certificates won't work anymore but I don't know about it for infants. I checked the airline website and they offer no information and I tried to call but was forced to leave a message and haven't gotten a call back yet...any ideas???

What can I do next?

I applied for my son's passport last month...the process time is up to three months now...unless you pay extra and can show proof of travel. The cost was around $100.00.

Yes, as far as I know. My son was 22 months when we went to South Africa late last year and he needed one. Mexico I'm not so sure, but more than likely yes, and I would have one done to be on the safe side.

Happy traveling!

As everyone has said...yes, he needs a passport. Don't wait! The cost to have it expedited is outrageous! And you will have to have it expedited if you're closer than about 2 months to your travel date.

Yes I was at Costco and they do passports too. You can get 2 passports for $20 or so. I was shocked and I asked what was the catch no catch that I could figure out.
Good Luck!

Yes, the infant needs a passport. You can google the official website for the passport requirements and also go to your main post office and they can also help you.

Here is the new information out this year.
Remember that a Passport assures you that
your baby will be allowed back to the US and that you have
not taken that baby from the Country you are visiting.

New passport regulations to affect infant travel

Infants could cross into U.S. borders with a birth certificate instead of a passport. On January 23, 2007, U.S. citizens and non-immigrant aliens, of every age, traveling by air into the United States will be required to present a valid passport or alternative travel document.

Even passengers traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport or other accepted travel document.

I would recommend you do it now since thay have alot of passports to process because of this new rule. Have fun in Mexico.

My daughter who is three has a passport, because I thought it better safe than sorry. But probably for an infant, probably best to check with consulate office or government website.
