Does anyone know of a play group or social group for teenagers with an autistic spectrum disorder? My daughter can entertain herself very well with computer/ youTube/ video games, reading and doing Kumon, but I think it is better for her to go out and learn how to social as well, esp. when there is plenty of time in Summer. Please let me know of any existing group(s) or if anyone is interested in forming one in the peninsula area, thanks!

What can I do next?

FriendSmarts in Palo Alto has social groups as well - they run two sessions during the school year. Here's their website for more info: <http://www.friendsmarts.com/>.

Talking Playhouse <http://www.talkingplayhouse.com/> in Redwood City also has groups for teens.

A.,

If you are in the Palo Alto/Menlo Park area (or don't mind traveling) there is the Childrens Health Council that has all sorts of programs for all sorts of kids. www.chconline.org.

Good luck

My 7 year old son goes to a K-12 LD school, and a few of the parents with HS kids rave about Michelle Winner down in San Jose. The center runs all kinds of classes, groups, and camps for kids on the Autism/Aspergers spectrum. Here's the website: http://www.socialthinking.com/

In Palo Alto there is a monthly group at EvoLibri. I think it's tonight, maybe? www.evolibri.com They may have some other ideas for her, too. Good luck.

It's not really a playgroup, but Communication Works is a company in Oakland that offers Social Integration classes for autistic spectrum kids of all ages. Kids are put into a class of 2-4 kids with a therapist. I believe that all of the therapists are trained by Michelle Garcia Winner down in San Jose. The kids in each group are hand selected for compatability. It's been a fabulous program for our 4 year old.

ALso, have you heard of Bayhill High School in Oakland? It'a a private high school for students with language based learning disorders. It sounds amazing.

Hope that's helpful.

Hi A.,

Every Saturday there is a program called E-Soccer, it is a soccer program that integrates exceptional children and teens with other children without special needs. The program is amazing.. and FREE!. The kids go out and play soccer, its on Saturdays. Here is the website:

Just click on the different links on the top of the website to find out more.

There are different locations depending on your location in the Bay Area.

Hope this is helpful!
