Need some opinions on insurance. My husbands company is giving us the option of deciding which insurance we want. The choices are United Healthcare and BCBSNC. Can y'all give me your experiences and thoughts on which one is better? Thank you for your time and thoughts.

What can I do next?

I have to chime in with great reviews for BCBSNC. I have had experiences with them when I was covered through my employer as well as taking out an individual policy on my daughter (it was cheaper than adding her to a different insurance i had at the time). I was very happy with the plans, coverage, and customer service I received from them. A BCBSNC representative even stopped by the hospital when I had surgery to just introduce herself and 'check' on me when i was in the hospital. She didn't talk about insurance or anything...just peeked her head in, introduced herself and said she hoped i'd feel better soon. Crazy, i know.

I have no experience with United Healthcare, but if BCBSNC was an option for me to choose again, I definitely would...i'm lost in the land of Aetna now.

Good luck with your decision!

I agree with Ingrid.....call your current physicians to see which plan they will accept.

Also, it really depends upon the coverage each plan is offering through your spouse's employer. BC/BS may be a widely accepted plan but if the deductibles, co-pays, and coinsurances are extremely high, it may not be worth it.

Look at both plans carefully. You should be able to locate the "Summary of Benefits" for both plans and compare them side by side. This summary will detail the copays, deductibles, hospitalization....etc....

On a side note, the wave of the future for employer based health insurances are moving toward major medical type plans.....very soon in the future, there will no longer be co-pays, HMO-type plans, and the like....insurance costs are rising; more and more companies are opting for 80/20 type plans....so, if you are able to choose a great plan now and be able to keep it indefinately, do it!

I have a BCBSNC private policy for my son, and I have a policy with them through work. They have been great, and have given me no trouble for any claim ever sent to them. They have a lot of different plans, so you can really choose the deductible and copay plan that works best for you. If you live in Raleigh, just about every doctor's office and hospital takes BCBSNC. I am not sure about United, as I have never had any experience with them. Maybe someone else can comment on that one... Hope this helps!

My husband works for Cisco and we have United Healthcare and it is spectacular! I don't know the prices or the plans because it all comes out of his check, but when my son was born, the bills totalled about 14000 and we only had to pay 100 dollars. our plan also covers dental and eye and none of our doctors have ever had any troublegetting them to pay.

I have heard from a BCBS employee that it is not very good and many doctors and physicians don't use it because it is too hard to get them to pay.

I would talk with yoru doctor and pediatrician and see if they both accept one or the other of those two, as well ast the dentist and such.

but we have been VERY please with United

I think BCBS is accepted more places (like WakeMed- United Health does not have a contract with WakeMed Hospitals anymore). I guess they're equally crooked, as most insurance companies are, but BCBS at least has a bigger network. Check with your physicians' business people to see which they prefer and to check what they accept.
