I'm looking for information regarding anyone who has had DOC Band Treatment with their child or has decided not to do it once it was recommended. I'm trying to decide whether to get my child treated at this time.

What can I do next?

A.,
Have you ever heard of Craniosacral therapy. If you call Sally Fryer ###-###-#### at Integrative Pediatric Therapy she can tell you more. She worked n the twins who were joined at the head from eygpt. She is wonderful and knows her stuff. It is an alternative way that may help you. You can get on www.upledgerinstitute.com and read more about it. My son and I hve been doing it for 4 years.

Hi A.,

My daughter had the DOC band for 12 weeks and it does really work, My only regret was that I waited until the end of June to have her wear it, I would suggest you have your son fitted and in the band before the summer months because it is very uncomfortable for them during the warmer months. Your son is 6 months old now and having him fitted and in the band now will shorten the time that he should have to wear it.

Hi A.,
I know this is such a hard decision to make. We did it when our son was about 4-6 months old. I stressed out about whether to do it or not too. I am glad I did. You will always wonder if you could have saved some money and not done it, but isn't that better that not having done it and risking your child having issues in the future! Our insurance didn't cover it because we are self-insured with a super high deductible. We shelled out $2000 for it out of pocket, but I don't regret it at all. Nate wasn't even in the serious category, but it was enough to be noticeable. Yahoogroups has a wonderful support group. Do a search on Yahoo groups and you'll find it. And if you need to talk further or have more questions, feel free to email me privately. I can show you pictures of my son in it or anything else that may help. And by the way, we did it in the summer and he didn't have any heat stress issues. (We did take extra care to keep him cool by pre-cooling the car, etc.) We also didn't have any sleeping problems, which was my biggest worry. I have a picture of him asleep in it a couple of hours after he got it. Good luck.

My now 4.5 year old boy had a DOC band at about 9 months. I am so greatful that I did. I do wish we had started earlier to have a better results. However i am please with the results. A friend of ours decided not to do it with their little girl. The keep her hair long, but you can still see thhat her head in the back is just flat. She can't wear pony's becasue you can really see it. Also i fought my insurance. Did a lot of reseach online and a letter from his md and had the insurance pay me back. Hope this helps and good luck

My daughter had DOC band treatment for severe plagio. It made a difference with her. Has your son been evaluated yet or is it just a recommendation by your ped? I would go to Cranial Technologies on 635 and get a free eval. They will tell you if he really needs it or not then you can make your decision. If they recommend it then yes you need to do it. Not correcting it will cause problems later on. I thought it was going to be terrible but it was nothing at all. Email me privately at ____@____.com if you want more info.

Hi A.,

We did have our son in the DOC band. He really didn't need it but we were concerned by a flat spot on his head. He only needed it for about 2 months and what a difference. It is pricey but well worth it. We went to the place in Dallas off of 635. Can't remember the name off hand but if you are interested I can find it for you. Good Luck to you!

We are in the process of doing this with our 4 month old girl. We went last week to Cranial Technologies and they made her head casting. We go back this week to pick up the band. The place is professional and extremely kid friendly. I would highly recommend them. Talk to the insurance people there, Michelle, and they can walk you through coverage. She was extremely helpful to us and helped us figure out whether we needed to cobra my daughter or not on my old plan. When I talked to United Healthcare they wanted us to use a place called Hanger, but I have not heard good feedback on this place. They don't specialize in pediatrics or the bands and their technology is old. Someone had mentioned about going in for the consult with Cranial Technologies - they can measure your childs head & take pictures. (They do this with the first visit). Good Luck - it is a hard decision & a costly one. They do suggest the earlier you start the shorter amount of time the child will have to be in the helmet because they are growing so rapidly.

We went to CranialTech off of Hillcrest and 635. Yes, it is pricey and getting insurance to cover the cost is quite a gamble. However, we're very happy we did it. There's not a whole lot of research to support whether there can be long-term effects from not treating a mal-shaped H., but we felt like it was in our son's best interests in the long run. There are people who say that they didn't go ahead with recommended treatment and their baby's H. rounded out on its own, but that's also quite a gamble. I've seen far too many kids with obvious flat heads to convince me that we didn't want to take the chance.
The treatment really isn't a whole lot of fun. You have to go in for check-ups every week or two weeks, depending on the severity of the problem. Plus, the helmet just stinks. Baby wears it 23 hours per day and sweats quite a bit in it. If you're thinking of going ahead with treatment, do it now while it's cool outside to cut down on the amount your baby will sweat.
