Infant Swimwear Question

Hi All,

I am thinking about signing my duaghter up for swim "class" this summer and while I understand the notion of swim diapers, I don't get whether they are worn under a regular bathing suit or are to be worn on their own. Ultimately my preference would be for my girl to wear a two peice outfit so changing her bottom half will be a little easier. I know there are some suits on the market that have a built in swim diaper, but if I run out to my local Target or wherever to get her a suit, do I need to be thinking about a "bubble butt" that she will have with a swim diaper underneath? As it is she is a cloth diaper baby, so I'm used to buying a size up for pants since most clothes are not cut to accomodate cloth diapers but I'm uncertain how to move forward with infant swimwear.

UPDATE: While I do know about Little Swimmers, and it is certainly something to explore, I would like to hear about your experience with washable swim diapers. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi J.,

It is a good idea to check with the pool where you will be taking your baby for swim classes as to what they allow.

I used the disposable ones at AVAC until one of the attendants there politely told me that they were not acceptable as they tend to rip and that the solid matter can then get into the pool.

They insisted on the re-usable diapers with the elasticated legs (which hold in the poop, but not all the pee). They also sold them in their store for a nominal fee (quite reasonable).

One word of warning - when changing out of the re-usable kind, check diaper first and remove it over a toilet or in the shower. It's deceptive how much is in there! And you can't always tell from the outside if it's pool water or pee!

For my son, I used the re-usable or the disposable under his swim trunks. For my daughter - she just has the re-usable and a swim shirt.

Hope this helps,
S.

We have used the disposable swim diapers in the past without a problem. They aren't too bulky and we didn't have to worry about buying special sized swim wear. A friend uses the washable kind and doesn't have any problems either. I have heard positive things about the built in kind and I am thinking about trying those this summer. It is just a matter of preference. Certain style swim suits will allow the diaper to be seen past the swim suit, but with little ones I don't think it matters. One thing to think about though. I just started looking into lessons too and I have found that at least one school requires a particular swim diaper and bathing suit (of course purchasable thru them). I would decide which school and find out if they have requirements before I make a purchase. Hope this helps.

I bought the washable swimsuits at Target for both of my daughters. You can buy the tops and bottoms separately (they even have matching hats and sunglasses, soooo cute!). Last year we bought a little ruffled pink bikini for my then 1.5 year old and it worked out well. There's a little certification ad on the packaging that says that it's certified by the american swim schools or some such agency, so they are ok to wear in public pools.

When we went on vacation, I bought the disposable kind. They do work but are quite large (not bulky, but tall), so you almost have to wear them by themselves, or otherwise under a 1-piece. They stick out of bikini bottoms and look funny. (Not that it really matters on a baby, I guess.)

Have fun!

I just started my daughter (13 months) at SwimAmerica and they require your to use the washable diapers that they provide. She wears that under the bottoms of her 2 piece.

Hi J.,
You can buy disposable swim diapers or washable ones. They basically keep the solids in, not the pee. I used the disposable ones last year, but my neighbor uses the washable ones. I think you can get both at Target. As for suit size, the swim diapers aren't as bulky as cloth so you shouldn't have to go up in size to accommodate. Have fun!
