Infant Gas Problems

I have a 14 week old baby boy. He is consistently gassy no matter if he has eaten or not. I give him Mylecon throughout the day everyday. He also takes prescription Zantac for Reflux. He spits up quite a bit also. My doctor has not other suggestions for me other than to keep changing his formulas. He is currently on Similac Soy and using Dr. Browns bottles. Has anyone else had this problem, and what remedies have you used?

What can I do next?

I had this same problem with my son (and dealt with it for over a year) until the Dr. ran a blood test for food alergies. I had to beg and pleed, but she finally ran the test. He is actually allergic to both cow milk and soy milk. He is now drinking rice milk which is not suggested for infants. Try just feeding him water mixed with pedialite for a two days and see if the gas and spit up goes away. If it does, you know it is a problem with the formula.

I had the same problem, but my son actually spit up alot also. I found that sitting out son up after a bottle or feeding and "pretreating" with Mylecon helped. Have you tried different bottles? I might be a bottle problem. We made the mistake of changing formulas with our son and it really caused pooping problems. TMI I'm sure but it was a big issue. I hope this helps, I hated the helpless feeling but time really does help. Good luck and congrats.

Try a product called Colic Calm. It's an all natural product and it did wonders when our little guy was dealing with gas pains. It also works great for teething. You can purchase it on-line. Just google the product name.

My daughter was Super gassy ALL the time! I would joke and tell my husband, "yep, she is your daughter!" but it was getting bad. To the point where it was hurting her tummy, especially at night time. I talked to my ped and they said to give her a probiotic. Buy capsules that you can take apart and put 1/4 of 1 in the bottle once a day. Been doing it for about a week and have noticed a huge difference. She is pooping regular now too. She still has some gas through the day and she toots while sleeping lol. but no more fussing because of it hurting her. She toots about half as much as she used to. She is 3 1/2 months old

i know this may sound odd and or old fashion but it helped my daughter when she would get gassy and have a tight tummy is 4oz warm water and half of a 1/4 tspn of baking soda mixed in it. baking soda is great for breaking up gas. it will cause a lot of burps but will relieve the pain. i use it on myself when i have a tight tummy. also try burping him after every couple oz. also what formula worked on my daughter was nestle good start. i hope this helps

I think the mylicon says to give it after eating I would give it to my daughter before and found it worked better. I would also burp my daughter before, midway, and after a bottle. I would also hold her up after feeding. I was told to stop shaking the bottle to mix the formula up to instead stir it in to cause less bubble. I'm not sure what type of bottle you use but after many trials of bottles I used the playtex drop in's because you can squeeze all the air out prior to feeding. They are also easy to clean. My daughter ended up switching to Alimentum a really expensive dairy free formula but it helped al ot. I hope this helps! My baby is 16 months and still gets very gassy. We call her toot toot!

Hi K.,

Our son had colic when he was a baby and we used Mylecon, Dr. Brown's bottles as well as Gripe Water (homeopathic) and Good Start Soy Formula. The Similac Soy didn't work for our son either. He had a rough time sleeping on his back and would constantly roll onto his tummy, so we were in a constant panic. We were lucky because he had good neck control and our Dr. reassured us thhe would likely be okay to sleep on his tummy, which also helped his gas. Please know that this too shall pass. Our son is now 2 years old and has been gas free for quite awhile now. I think you're doing the right things and think that Gripe Water may be a good new something to try.

Hi KP, Time for a new pediatrician! Sounds to me like he may have reflux which is easily treated with with prescription Zantac or Prevacid. I'm surprised the doctor hasn't spoken with you about this. Also, I wasted tons of money on Mylecon until I realized that it's next to worthless. Our Pediatrician confirmed this opinion. Ask the Ped about reflux and see if he agrees. The Prevacid worked miracles for our little guy. He outgrew the reflux at about 6 months.

Formula: Alementum (sw?) by similiac worked really well for my baby. It is expensive but you see improvement right away. They grow out of close to 4 months so just hang in there!

I'm dealing with this same problem right now. Taken baby to chiropractor twice this week!! I heard that babies can have a hiatal hernia where the stomach pushes up into the chest through an opening in the diaphragm and this can be a cause of reflux. It has helped tremendously with the reflux. For the gas I use GRIPE WATER and mylicon together. I get gripe water at Target or the local health food store. The doctor said I can give baby both of those and that is amazing for gas!! Also I sometimes put a warm rice bag on his tummy wrapped in a small blanket so he doesn't get burned. It is soothing to him. He loves his tummy being massaged too in light strokes going clockwise (the direction of the colon...helps get excess gas out!!) Good luck!

My daughter in law has a baby with gas problems when she eats cabbage or milk products. (She nurses) So she avoids any of the cabbage family (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.) and any milk product (milk cheese, yogurt, cream cheese, milk chocolate, etc). Two of her three kids had gas when she ate milk products and one did not.

My mother was alergic to cows milk and could only eat goat's milk. She was born in 1922. You might also try and find a wet nurse and see if that helps. (A wet nurse has a baby and will nurse your child along with hers.) Or maybe mothers milk can be bought. I don't know if it can or not.

Good luck to you and your baby.

Mylicon never worked for my son. At all. Completely useless.
He didn't suffer from reflux, so I can't speak to how that plays into his problems, but someone out here suggested Colic Calm when we were going through it.
You can Google it, it's a website where you can order from. It worked like a charm.
Now, I will say that it's rather disturbing to give it to your little one. The serum is black because of the natural charcoal, so it's troubling to look at that running out of the side of their mouths! BUT! It's the only thing that ever helped DS. And he would invariably fall asleep within 30 minutes of getting it. It really helped him relax, and I liked that it was drug free.
If you're looking for alternatives, give that a shot.

**One other note. Similac made my son HORRIBLY gassy. I figured that out late in the game. The minute I switched him to Enfamil, we had no more problems.

Has he been tested for a milk protein allergy or lactose intolerance? Both cause gas.
