Hi Moms,
I wanted to start grilling my meat and fish, but we dont have a grill. Any suggestions on a cheap indoor/outdoor grill? Or would it be the same if I use the oven? I'm afraid my electricity bill will go way high. Any suggestions ladies?
Thanks a lot!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi everyone.. Thanks for all your wonderful insights. Ya'll have helped me decide I don't want charcoal.. simply because I am lazy and wouldnt want to sit and wait on it to get going, and plus if its raining (like it has been for a month now) I wouldnt be able to use it. I did receive a George Forman grill for my wedding (3yrs ago) but never used it since it requires a propane gas tank and I'm a lil scared to buy those and keep in the house....Like one of you had said, I will test out using the indoor to see how often I use the grill and then upgrade myself to an outdoor grill. (plus we have a small backyard right now)- Again thank you very much!!!

You will be able to do different things depending which style you go with (in vs. out). But for convenience (and initial cost) I would say start with an indoor and if you use it often enough and like it then upgrade later to an outdoor. We have both (and use both) and the indoor is nice when we don't want to cook a lot or the weather isn't cooperating. The outdoor gives you the option of cooking more things at once (veggies and meat at once) and you get a different flavor. We have a George Foreman indoor, it's great, and a Charbroil gas outdoor grill that we love too.

I do know that my neighbor bought a new grill a few years ago and it was so light it blew over in one of our huge winds and broke. I had my grill blow over this year and it is really heavy so anchor it down if you can and get one that is heavy.

Hi J J,

There is actually a cheap charcoal grill at Wal-Mart for 19.96 that stands up from ground, and then they have the ones that are same size but sit on ground with little stand legs that fold out and those are 10 bucks. I have used the 10 dollar ones before and they are fine, but I actually prefer the grill to stand up higher. I broil a lot inside, but its nice to grill some too....especially hamburger patties. Congrats on baby!! Good Luck : )

Hibachi's are reasonable for small cooking. I think you can even get portable ones like used for tail-gate parties. Anything that uses charcoal vs propane is cheaper. Anything fire releated I wouldn't think you would want to use indoors. Yeah, don't use your oven. Not only for its use of electricity but the extra heat that will cause your airconditioning to run longer.

Congratulations on your awaited arrival. I have a pickup-delivery weekly diaper service if you are interested or if someone would like to give you the service as a shower gift. Please check our website: www.earthbabydiaperservice.com
Approximately the same cost as disposables and no waste since I wash the diapers!

The George Foreman grill I use doesn't require a propane tank. They aren't terribly expensive, and cut out a ton of grease and fat from our diet. We love it! Rain or shine, 100+ degree weather, we grill. I would recommend the one with the removeable plates, just for ease of cleaning (they are dishwasher safe. The next one I purchase will have the removeable plates.

When I was young and our oven went out, my father took the oven rack out of the oven (you might even be able to find a cheap one from an old appliance store or they might give you one) and he put it on cement blocks. He built the fire underneath with charcoal. You could also use bricks, but it would only take about 4 cement bricks to make a square area with the middle for the charcoal. Just lay the rack on top of them. We had a great summer that year. I will never forget it. We may have been poor that summer, but we grew rich memories.

I love the flavors that grilling impart to meat, so it is a totally different way of cooking on a grill than in the oven.

What is your budget? If you go with a charcoal grill - there is an element of inconvenience in having to get it going before you cook. I have one of each. And for the majority of the time because of the convenience of the gas I use it. I also cook a ton outside in the summer cause it cuts down on the heat in the house by running the stove or oven. Let me know what your budget is, 'cause if you can afford a gas grill I suggest you do that, just because of the convenience. (whether you get gas or charcoal - I have tons of great recipes! Let me know if you want any!)

I just bought one today at Lowes for 69.00 with a free cover. It is a great deal, I love cooking outside during this hot weather.

Try a george forman grill, there great, inexpensive and easy to clean. They also come in various sizes (and colors). We love ours and use it more than the outdoor grill
