In Search of Pediatrician Willing to Follow Alternative Vaccination Schedule

Hi ladies. I had the worst experience yesterday at my pediatrician's office. My baby was scheduled for 2 month appt. and Dr. knew I wished to follow alternative vax schedule per our prior discussion. However, upon yesterdays appt. she flipped out on me and told me my baby might die, etc. etc. if I didn't allow her to go ahead and administer the vax. I am in search of a pediatrician who is willing to listen to me and understand my concerns. Does anyone know of a pediatrician who will do this? There are two autistic children on my husband's side of the family and I really wish to take all precautions. (I know of Dr. Berger who is great but, unfortunately, his office doesn't take insurance). Please help, I feel so lost.

What can I do next?

I'm not sure what area you live in but Dr. Hartman of Pediatric Healthcare Alliance in Lutz in WONDERFUL!!!! I didn't necessarily follow an alternate vaccination schedule but I did delay my daughter's MMR vaccine. She took the time to explain what the literature had to say (not at all in a patronizing manner) and then that was the end of it. She said when I was ready to have my daughter vaccinated, simply call and make an appointment. That was a year ago and she hasn't brought it up since. Also, you can locate a "vaccine friendly doctor" at this website: http://www.askdrsears.com/thevaccinebook/Vaccine_Friendly....
Good luck!

M.,

I take my daughter to Dr. Yanina Fiallos, on N Dale Mabry in Lutz. She does promote vaccines. But she was really good at working with me with a modified protocol.

My daughter was a premie. I did have the Hept B given to her, but it was 2 weeks after discharge. it wasn't given in the hosp.

She was willing to space out the vaccines for me. (when I went back to work I had have more given to her together). I declined the Rotavirus (fortunately, the problems with the vaccine hit the news 1-2 days later). I declined the chicken pox vaccine. She did get the Flu Vacc only because we were traveling over the holidays, via airline.

She has never been on antibiotics (except when she was in the NICU). They are good a returing calls. Even though she is a conventional Dr. I have been pretty happy with her & the nurses. I call a couple months ago, regarding my daughter having a fever. They were willing to see her, but because she had not other symptoms of illness, the recommended watching to see what develops, that it could be a cold. Sure enough, 2 days later, she had a runny nose.

I had requested referrals a couple of times. One was for a pediatric sleep specialist (which I didn't follow through with), the other was for a GI specialist. I have had no problems getting refferals.

They do take insurance. I always ask about the Thimerosol issue. So far none if their vaccines have it. I think the flu vaccine is the only one that does. But they carried the one that doesn't.

I hope this helps.

Good for you for following your insticts! I too went through countless Ped's trying to find one that would work with me. Try a Dr. Hildago in CLearwater on US 19 or Dr. Teena Hughes in Tampa on Fletcher near USF. You will have more luck with Dr.s who are not part of a big group and have a private practice of thier own. Good Luck and Good for you - your daughter is lucky to have a Mom who doesnt let just the Dr's decide what is best for thier children.

Dr. Thole (Wee Care for Kids) is excellent. We're using Dr. Sears' alternative vaccine schedule and she is incredibly supportive. She and her staff are fantastic. She will even split the mmr vaccine into separate shots. She's not too far from Riverview high school (We drive from Brandon to see her - she's that good) I know she takes Humana but not sure about other plans. Phone # ###-###-####

Just keep looking and asking - your daughter WILL NOT die if you wait. Their only tactic is to scare you and you definitely don't want a doctor that won't listen to you and hear what you have to say. You may want to report what the dr. said to you to the proper agency? These are the type of things we should have documented. You might even google alternative doctors, or alternative vax, and see if there is somone you could contact that way. Let them know you want to stay with traditional medicine and maybe they can point you in the right direction and refer you to someone in your area. I had to travel to pasco for my peditrican, but it was worth it for as little as I had to go. Don't get overwhelmed at this point - you have plenty of time to make YOUR decision. I struggled with all of this as well, and now my kids are all done with that til college. This will take alot of energy, time and patience so keep looking, keep asking LOTS of questions and question what they are doing - they should be on your side and willing to help and listen. Good Luck!!!

M., I think you need to call around, and let the offices know your specific concern before you interview the doc or make an appt. You can save yourself a lot of gas just by explaining your agenda early, and letting them say yes or no to your request. A lot depends upon what insurance you have, and whether they will accept your alternative schedule.

Breastfeeding supportive peds other than Dr. Berger tend to be Dr. Mark Borden, Dr. Yanina Fiallos, Dr. Patrick Ye, Dr. Mark Bilela, Dr. Domenick Reina, and others that I have not mentioned. Breastfeeding supportive docs tend to be more likely to provide alternative vac schedules too.

Just because those kids are autistic doesn't mean they are from the vax. My great nephew is autistic and it is not from the vax. If you do your research you will find being autistic is in the genetic structure of the person in most cases. His was caused from lack of oxygen at time of birth. There are thousands of causes of being autistic. Vax are not the main cause and percentage wise the deseases they get from not getting them do cause more deaths. If you are really concerned do more research on your computer. You will be amazed at the information you can find. Mayo Clinics wed site is a good place to start. Also you can talk to professionals that deal in nothing but autistic children. They can explain the main causes. I don't agree that your child will die without the vax. But I do agree that you are putting your child at greater risks by not getting them.

We are also following Dr. Sears' alternative vac schedule and interviewed docs in advance specifically for this reason. We ended up at Healthpoint seeing Dr. Sokol who just retired but are transferring to Dr. Mark Borden. Their group takes most insurance and they have several offices.

I agree with pp that you should call around before making another appointment. No dr should try to scare you about vac. You didn't say that you didn't want them, just that you wanted a safe alternative schedule.

I postponed my imunnizations for my son for a different reason but my doctor was fine with that. Other doctors in the office were not as understanding so I stuck with Dr Richard Wilde who works out of the Lutz office of Pediatric Healthcare Aliance. The phone number is ###-###-####. I hope this helps.

M.,

I understand your concern because I am in the same situation. My husbands brother is autistic and we are very cautious about our sons vaccination. We go to Dr. Perkins at Pediatrics Health Care Alliance on Fletcher Av. She is great and had no problems holding of on our son's MMR (he is 19 month)and said that a lot of parents are doing just that. She is also very kind and gentle and will give you all the time you need. We have never felt rushed or like we were asking a stupid questions. Hope all goes well in your search!
