I'm STILL Falling Apart...

All other recent aches and pains aside, I've got a new one! I'm really not being a hypochondriac... I actually have a really, really high tolerance for pain. Good news; sinus ache is gone! That you Sudafed! Clavicle still hurts... stupid thing.

And now, my new pain....

My BACK.

My darling, adorable, daredevil son jumped off the back of the couch... headfirst into my spine... 3 days ago. Scared my to death; he could have snapped his little neck!! All discipline aside, I had a huge bump and bruise for 3 days, but now it kind of hurts to breathe in real deep, and it hurts to move. Not excruciating, but again, I have a high pain tolerance. Other than taking tylenol for the pain and as an anti-inflamatory, what else will help this? I've tried icing it... doesn't really do anything for me other than turn me into a Rachcicle ;)

What now? What else can I try? It's my BACK, I kind of need it to stop hurting ;)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Do you ladies see why I wait so long to see a doc? I mean, if I had gone for my clavicle, I'd be back again today. I just rack up the injuries and go in there and say 'Hi, I'm a train wreck! It hurts here... here... here... and here' ;)

First of all Tylenol will not do anything for inflamation. You asprin or ibuphren (sp). It could be a deep muscle bruise. It could be a cracked or broken rib. If the pain doesn't subside by tomorrow, see a doctor.

sounds more like bruisedor tense muscle/pinched nerves to me... I have that same deep inhale pain when I strain my back too much. It helps me to pop my back, stretch and someone to rub it =)

I think you need to be seen. Ribs are actually fairly easy to break. And Im not trying to scare you, but if it hurts when you breathe, you could have a punctured lung too. My husband did.

Take about 3 or 4 advil. You probably need to lay down and let it heal, but that's not realistic huh? It will dissipate once you get enough ibuprofen level in your system.

I'm thinking the same as a few other mommies. Bruised or craked rib.
Funny thing is bruised ribs sometimes hurt more than broken. But either way NOT fun.
I've broken 4 ribs, 2 on each side, not at the same time, but ya. OUCH
Did you notice any bruising on your front also? or side? or was it mostly on your back?

What stinks about hurting your ribs is there is nothing a doc can do besides maybe give you pain meds.
When I had one of my ribs broken, it healed wrong and my dad (a doctor) had to re brake it to set it in place..I think i want to cry just thinking about that...
::shudder::
Sometimes it helps to lightly wrap the area, but mostly it's one of those grit your teeth and deal with it :(

It does sound like a cracked or bruised rib.
They don't even wrap/tape for ribs anymore because restricting deep breathing can cause some lung problems - make you more vulnerable to pneumonia.
As long as the rib is not out of alignment (where it might gouge other internal organs and cause further damage) the other ribs act as a split and it heals up on it's own.
Now the bad news - as with any broken bone it can take up to 2 months to heal.
Most doctors will prescribe pain medication to get through it.
Since spine/ribs protect some pretty important organs, I think it's worth it to see a doctor on this one.
I'm not sure where exactly you took the impact - lower edge of the rib cage covers kidneys, upper covers liver, lungs, heart, pancreas.
They will tell you what motions/lifting to avoid till you heal up.
When my son was that age I told him he's got to be gentle with Mommy - my warranty is up and I don't heal so quickly anymore.
I'm glad your sinuses are better.
Sometimes it's just one thing after another!

Sounds like you need to be readjusted from the impact of straining to break your son's fall and save your back! I would see a chiropractor and keep taking the Advil. It might take a few days but the pain should lessen as the days go on, at least that's been my experience. And ask about icing vs. using a heating pad - I'm not sure if icing is the way to go for this? I am not 100% sure, but I want to say that it can make the tightness worse in some cases. I always forget when you should ice versus use heat... anyway, good luck and try the chiro! Hope it gets better soon!

I think you should call your doctor- maybe you need muscle relaxants, or maybe you could get something that will help with the pain.

btw- ReverendRuby is right- Tylenol will do nothing for inflamation. Ibuprofin helps with inflamation.

Painful breathing sounds like it could bea sprained rib or two. Take it easy I would just to calm your fears go see a doctor and talk about what is going on with you. Our bodies have a way of talking to us to let us know that we need to slow down. Listen and see what it's telling you. After that soak if you can in a bathtub of epsom salt for about 20 min. Make the tub as warm as you can stand it and bring a bottle of water with you. Drink the bottle of water while you are soaking as it may make you thirsty. Epsom salt will help ease the pain of sore tired and achy muscles. I tell all my clients in between massages to soak in epsom salt. It really does help and all massage theraists recommend it to their clients. In my opinion as an HHP. It never hurts to have yourself checked out for the sake of the kids. And get more massages, mommy needs her quiet time as well.

Advil works better as an anti-inflammatory. Ice won't work, but heat will ease the pain better.

Since you're having trouble breathing and pain this long after the injury you should at least call your doctor. Get seen for the sinus thing in case all you're doing with the Sudafed is treating symptoms of a sinus infection (which won't make the infection go away). And get seen for the clavicle as well as this injury. If you don't take care of yourself, you won't be able to take care of your children the best way possible.

If it is muscle then Heat will work better. I think a visit to the Dr. would be your best bet at this point. The 3rd day of injuries is the worst so give it one more day then be sure to call if it isn't any better. I myself can't take anything but tylenol I have had ulcers in the stomach in the past so I just have to suffer. Hope you feel better soon.

Sounds like it could be a cracked rib. Nothing can be done if that's the case. I suggest it's more likely strained muscles. Heat works the best for that. And ibuprofen for inflammation.

I've had numerous strained muscles and ultimately all you can do is wait until they heal. I'd wait for a week or more before seeing the doctor.

I suggest that not seeing the doctor with each pain is the right way to go. Most of the time, it's just time that takes care of these things.

My first reaction was the same as Molly's.

Painful to breathe is usually bruised or broken ribs. I actually had bruised ribs from having Pneumonia as a teen... They put me on Darvocets for the pain. That's all they could really do. My coughing caused the bruises (lungs hitting my ribs too hard).

I agree, you should probably get some x-rays to be sure there's nothing broken, but also maybe get something for the bruising if there aren't any fractures.

You might have a cracked rib and there's really nothing they can "do" for that....google it and see if it sounds like a cracked rib.

I'd see a chiro or massage therapist. If he fell into your spinal column he probably knocked something out of whack. Not to say a doc couldn't answer any possible cracked rib issues and then redirect you to a "spine doctor" if that's what needed.

I don't think Tylenol is an anti-inflamatory at all. You are better off with motrin as another reader said.
